(I think metroid on a pc with keyboard, mouse and controller would be so much better.) But, I refuse to give MS money since they are a suck company they make my life hell. I am friends with at least two people who have no Windows partitions, the third might (he installed XP to see what MS has been up to since he hadn't used windows since 98, not sure if he still has it on his machine). I myself do have windows partitions on 2 out of my 4 machines, but they are used only very rarely and only because I have to support windows. And my main work machine is debian only box, so I use Abiword, gnumeric and openoffice.

Now the real question is, would I bother buying Office if it was released for Linux. The answer is no, since the alternative are perfectly fine for what I do.

The problem isn't flash, its director. Basic flash exists on linux and works great, flash with director, (which uses activex stuff) doesn't exist. The kids sites make heavy use of director. My wife likes to play these kiddy games, so I ended up buying the Crossover plugin. Now those stupid sites work pretty well.

Nope if you looked at my User# you would realize that. And Tivo only discourages hacking that tries to decrypt or transfer the programming off of the machine. Actually with the v3.0 of the software they included drivers for the ethernet card (a 3rd party addon) to make installation easier.

There isn't anything wrong with that per se, but how do you get the source to the GPL parts?

Why you get them from here of course, hardly hidden. There isn't that many addons because there isn't much of a market. And there is quite a bit you can do with it since, its easy to get a bash prompt. Compile what ever you want on it.

The TIVO with OS > version3 has the drivers built in. You just tell it your dialing prefix is ",#401", and it knows to use the ethernet card.

If it wasn't a closed box... You'd be able to add a second (or third) tuner channel and record several shows at the same time.

You're wrong. The TIVO uses a hardware mpeg encoding and decoder chip. It is only capable of encoding one show at a time. This is why only the Direct/Tivo's can do two channels at a time, they don't need to encode the incoming stream, they can just dump it to disk.

Also hackers have hacked this box to include stuff. They created a NIC for it. (Just installed mine last week) They also made a web interface for it. Series 2 has a PCI bus so adding stuff is even easier. (Hell it has USB)

I have some problems with your arguments. First, you exagerate the problems with getting X to work. If you buy decently supported card and use a recent distro. X setup usually works out of the box and is a piece of cake. (And windows usually has to download drivers too.

Also linux does have a directInput equivalent, SDL. And while SDL doesn't yet support force feed back (which is kinda pointless IMO) it does everything else DirectInput does, while being much nicer to use. Your right Linux can be a pain in the ass, if you don't have the right equipment, and if you don't know what you are doing. However, the same can be said about windows. I know plenty of people who have stability problems playing windows games.
