I'm posting to all you fellow americans out there - foreigners need not read or reply.
Why _should_ he support management's move to save money by moving people offshore? Yeah, it smacks of unionism anticapitalist market controls blah blah etc, but come on, do we workers in America really want to support exporting our jobs to places where the cost of living is so much lower that the salaries can also be lower? Will we workers in America see some great benefit for doing that? (Managers need also not read or reply - we know you're going to benefit:-P )
I'm not looking out for "the best cost/value ratio" for my company, though it almost certainly lies with people in other countries - they don't share my tax woes or say 'hello' to me when I'm out walking my dog, and they won't lend me a hand when _my_ job gets outsourced next. That extra money saved won't go to the original poster anyway - or will he see a pay raise because they've given him a team in a far-off land? Not bloody likely.
Pro-america pro-union sentiments never last long around here, and I expect this'll be no different.
Oh well - I'm not going to be in the tech industry forever - getting my teaching certificate so I can take a position in a field management can't outsource (_and_ I know my employer will still be around after the next boom/bust cycle.)
Except.. then when you're using it at home you have to stare at the wall, which is almost certainly farther away than where it would sit on your desk, and you can't angle it for comfort.
unless you're using it as a big expensive digital picture-frame..
As others have said much more eloquently in this very discussion - if we were all so lackadaisical with regards to the politics of software as Torvalds is, then the Microsofts of the world would have taken all the toys away from us long ago, by legislation, to their great profit. Stallman is providing a very valuable role - someone who cares about the way the code fits into the world.
What's that Orwell quote someone has in their sig, something about how being apathetic in the face of fascism is tantamount to supporting it?
Just out of curiosity, because I really have no idea at all, does anyone know what the general level of knowledge is in other places around the world?
I mean, the stereotype on teh salshdot seems to play pretty heavily on Americans being drunken illiterates, but somehow it doesn't quite make sense that things are really so bad here compared to anywhere else. Could some average european types name the important inner workings of their government- recent bills traveling through whatever deliberation committee they have, etc?
Maybe it's a nice stereotype to perpetuate because us super-smart people in America who do know who our senators are (as well as all the europeans who detest the successful infusion of american culture into their own) can feel smarter and better than the all those rednecks Leno catches on his 'Jaywalking' segment?
SimpleFace is all right, i guess.. but we want to sound more 22nd-century. and normal words are friendly, maybe, but shouldn't we try to sound more futuralist? like ModuleCon, or GrafxEaz or Uz-Whiz?
What's that? You don't want my help anymore.. fine, I'll just go back to my video game project, Mutton Kombat: Gamma;)
The Rock, playing the Scorpion King in his new the movie The Scorpion King, represents a memetic paradigm shift away from a post-Columbine 9/11 tech-entrenched world. Fascinating look at something, also I am aware of America as "world's most hated supervillain." Although the world is not as black-and-white as I am paid to write it , teh truth is, the more things change, the more they stay the same.
Hee hee heee, sosrry, I couldn't help myself! I've never flamed jonkatz before but I took one look at the headline and thought "he reviewed that wrestler flick with the flaming swords? god damn!" I hope at least someone enjoys this before it plummets to -1 land:)
Think of the teenage Everquest addict's likely profile--a smart geek with a lot of ability but no respect in real life. Our society--particularly our highschool society--accords brainless people with athleticism limitless respect, and people with tremendous minds but not so impressive bodies almost none.
That's a nice way to get modded up, but probably not so accurate. Try: Our society--particularly our highschool society--accords outgoing and friendly people (who tend to move toward social activities like sports and dating) limitless respect, and people with tremendous egos because they unlocked the secrets of programming instead of flirting almost none.
As for Columbine- the world does not exist to be fair and to cater to unbalanced individuals. Fairness is nice, and something we should probably strive for, but being unfair nevereverever justifies that kind response. It is sad and alarming that people could read anything into the Columbine incident but the tragedy that two very sick youths took out their rage on their classmates and peers.

Free speech ends where your ears begin? so.. if people are chanting slogans and you walk by..they have to stop?

If you're going to mod this down, please at least use the "-1 Stupid" tag :(
It's too bad this headline didn't happen to the previous version.. ba-dum ching!!

Kick the commercial noobs off.

Maybe they just figured out to play the system better than anyone else - and we all suffer from collective jealousy that we didn't think of it first
Also, slackware is very nice.
I am chicago-style. Mama mia! I have-a no pants!
I agree!
Also, a 20 gig iPod would be nice.
heh.. "pagan" comes from the greek "paganos" - meaning "countryman."
It refers (rather, used to) to the folk religions of the people, rather than the state-organized fun.
Ha! Finally, someone who says "Mod me down" gets modded down!
Victoly!!!

"We do not accept I&S Money" "No I&S Money here" "Real $$$ Only"
