Well, they are in New Delhi, India, things are a little less safe there and that is an understatement. Yes, we are not faced by emergencies normally. If you have kids that go to school, you will understand that things have a way of changing fast with kids and you are faced with weird situations at least once a week, the most common being school leaving early because of some reason.
"People who are heavily into technology often lack common sense. Giving a 4 year old a cel phone is so mind numbingly nonsensical that it makes me lose hope in the future of humanity."
-> No, thats not true, we are in different age. I started using computers when I was 10-15 years old. They have computer classes now for 8 year olds. Things are changing and applying nonsensical old age rules is not the way to go. I dont expect him to run over my cell account by calling his friends. But giving him something so that he can reach us during an emergency is definitely something that keeps us happy.
I have 2 nephews and 1 niece and they were introduced to a desktop computer right when they were a year and a half . Of course for them it was just something they could do while we fed them. But they picked up typing and mouse skills which I found my parents had a hard time picking up. My 3 year old nephew plays Mortal Kombat 4 and GTA ( yes yes I know it is too violent and I am not proud of that) I even got them cell phones when they were 4. According to me its a safety thing.
If the question is technology at what age, I would say there is no such thing as an age to introduce technology. What we should always remind/warn them of is the misuse of technology. Introduce them to the dangers, make them responsible. In my case - viruses and porn at some later age.
The same is the argument for texting. Dont text while driving, but I dont want any kid with a cellphone not able to text and inform in case he is lost or there is an emergency and lack of cellphone signal.
Ignoring technology is a crime.
He is talking about the IP Stack, not the computer science stack structure.
Calling it an IP stack is an over-exaggeration.
This is a cleverly written (no doubt) program using ICMP knowledge to ping back a response packet.
Please dont call that a stack!!
Well, you gotta be 18 to vote, but thats it.
How about providing a secure system and a software to control viruses ? It will always be a work in progress, the fight against viruses but to ask for license is giving wayy too much power in the hands of authority.
How can this be misused ? I can think of a few examples
- They could use this license as some form of ID and then track people habits !!
- Selectively grant access to a certain group of people only. H1B visa holders do not get internet access in the US. !!
and many more abuses
well, typically you are interested in only a few pieces of beautifully written code or some methods. Not the entire source. This scheme could work then.
Imagine all the possibilities for hacking this AR system can provide!!
How about sending everyone in the area to the same restaurant by showing them empty seats ?
How about sending people in the wrong buses ?what about leading people to a dark corner of the street so they can be mugged ?
The security questions that this can raise are enormous !
With Apple's current attitude acting as a moderator for all apps and trying best not to anger anybody, I wonder how any of the above dreams will be realized. So someone makes an app for showing which restaurant has available seating. Next day restaurant sues apple for some privacy invasion crap. Next thing apple pulls app down.
IE has an auto-complete feature for its location bar too and so does Chrome.
Although chrome is a lot more aggressive about it i.e. with chrome it searches not only your bookmarks, but also google.
So you can always say that its just looking for similar sites to someone who is not very much into computers. An experianced user may be able to figure out though. There is always private mode browsing for your help if you don't have bookmarks.
These statements are not surprising and such things are true everywhere. In computer architecture for example, no one wants to change a hell lot of things because that may lead to new compilers, rewriting legacy codes etc and no one is interested in doing that even if it can provide tremendous performance and scalability benefits. There are radical ideas, but if they are too radical and need a lot of change, then nobody wants them because of the effort required to change existing systems. I think to some extent this may be true here too.
I am trying to figure out whether any of following is true :
Too small a sample set ? How about ~50000 people getting out of a large stadium ?
Was there something to do with the obstacle placed near the exit that led people to exit faster ? What about if there is a large piece of rock near the exit. ?
What if there is a row of lights that guide people to form queues near the exit ? Would that be faster than this ?
I think the study was conducted in the right spirit, but the conclusions cannot be easily drawn. To simply dismiss intuition is not the correct way to go about it. To say that an obstacle placed near the exit makes people exit faster is not the best way to put out the conclusion IMHO. How about an obstacle placed near the exit tends to reorder people which can lead to faster exit ?
I think the real question is not whether there will be spectrum enough for our bandwidth needs, but whether we will be able to afford it! Given that AT&T charges an arm and a leg for data rates/roaming, I can imagine what the charges will be in the future!
That is not really a surprising discovery. There are differences in the way people show agreement and disagreement in different areas. In fact there are interesting differences in the way people show how they liked the food in different nations and the same actions can mean entirely opposite things in different countries.
I guess the implications of this discovery are interesting for robot developers and AI.
Exactly!! Another unit we could use $$ per mile ?
Why are we talking about gasoline usage only when this car uses 2 forms of energy ?. I mean, does battery use not mean energy ? I am sure it will increase my power bill If I drive daily to work using just electricity, I wish there were some figures as to how much electricity this consumes so we could do an apples to apples comparison of how much $$$ is consumed per mile .
I am sure even cable tv charges in the US are among the world's most expensive and this includes satellite subscriptions too.
I mean each package is an extra 10$ for around 5 channels which is on top of the 30-40$ that we pay for basic cable anyway!!!
Wow, noone has thought of using this for p0rn yet.
Imagine what having a pressure sensitive keyboard could do for porn sites ? I mean, they could use the mouse movements and keyboard pressure to get you.....

You must be watching a lot of pr0n.

To steal code, you print screen and save it as an image file :)

Dont you dare tell the chinese government. They will get legitimate reason for torture to cure internet addiction.

So, we are all becoming monkeys, is it ? Just yesterday we were talking about itching and today this !!
So how many of you starting getting an itch after reading this article?
Really, I thought they were using Pigeons. http://www.google.com/technology/pigeonrank.html
There was an article recently about how bing was using humans to better their search results. I think this was MS's excuse to provide pro-MS results.
I for one welcome our new censoring . Switching to google android in 5 4 3 2 1.... complete
