    Classic mistake by someone who doesn't understand economics. The 30c you save on the cabbage can also be used to buy something else. i.e create new employment up the value chain.

    If you raise the wages for cabbage pickings, then the whole nation wants to become cabbage pickers, which may not be good for the country. Remember every country's goal is to increase its own wealth. If wealth can be created cheaply then the nation as a whole benefits. Sure, you may argue that only the rich benefit from this. That is bull-shit. Even the most impoverished american families have TV, Fridge, Car, & a Roof to stay; things that are considered luxuries in many countries that implement your "protectionist" ideas

    Uh, the reason for not having multiple copies is not storage, but update. Suppose one of the dll changes, how the hell do you make sure you change them all? What if the patch is actually a critical security fix?

    I was a happy Firefox/Firebird user till 1.0 was released. On WinXP SP2, there are zombie firefox processes even after I close firefox. The reason I switched to FireFox was in the hope that it would be less bloatware. But, I have seen FireFox process eatup more than 75MB of my memory. If it starts leaving zombie processes taking my valuable CPU, what is the advantage of FireFox over any adware/spyware/malware?

    To add, Firefox is more hyped than any product M$ has ever launched.

    I'll use IE right now(Never had any issues ever actually since sp2). I'll continue to evaluate every new release of FireFox to see if they have removed this major annoyance for me.

    According to Zeitgeist Apple's marketshare swings between 3 and 4 in recent times and that increases the probability that it is somewhere in the 3.5% region

    i) Read thousands of e-books on my couch, while making notes on it
    ii) Browse in a comfortable position, while watching TV
    iii) Take Notes in a meeting / classroom.
    iv) Pass it around easily to show something
    v) Design/Architect solutions while not having to worry about transfering it to PC(the monkey coders at /. wouldn't understand that anyway)
    vi) Reduce endless clutter of sticky pads

    and surely each person will have a niche use

    Dell entering a market is huge irrespective of the quality of the product they sell. When Dell enters the market all their competitors can kiss their fat margins goodbye. Sure people will pay a premium for quality products but they wont pay anything more than 15-20%.
    Now Apple has to significantly reduce their prices. No matter how good their product is (most of them care just for the hard drive anyway, which is a commodity)
    Expect price drops in all mp3 players

    I havn't seen even single comment or post (atleast not moderated high enough) which have actually thought through this.
    Here is the list of stupid arguments from the supposedly intelligent crowd.

    1) Open source crowd will replace the code in minutes(Just becuase you buy a new car doesn't mean you are absolved of stealing a car)

    2) There are only 80 lines of code out of 5 millions(One analyst saw 80 lines oout of many violations, doesn't mean they have only 80 lines of code in violation, again basic logic 101)

    3) SCO is going down (yeah use that line of defense in front of the judge)

    4) SCO is money hungry (as though IBM is rebirth of Gandhi/Jesus)

    5) IBM will crush them.

    The fact is unless IBM acts quickly /. crowd is in for a huge shock. In fact as each day builds their myths is getting destroyed

    Remember how you jumped in joy when Novell, Open Group all made claims about Unix copyright?

    Remember how you all claimed about main(); for(i=0); as being copied?

    Remember how you trashed Laura claiming her not to be a developer?

    The fact is, this is bigger than what you have imagined. Grow up, Wake up and keep the pipe you have been smoking all along.

    It is fairly neutral(in fact even Linux & advanced users biased). It shows Marketshare of Linux has failed to register even a blip, while XP grew from 0% to a whopping 26% in just a few months.

    Before everyone spews some shit about how they access Google from office, I have got one word for you guys 'Corelation'. Most of the enterprise has not switched to XP, but yet XP shows up at 26%. Also I dont believe that after all those people switching to Linux, it hasn't grown past 1% (i.e 0% growth) for the past freaking 24 months. Pretty damning for the fastest growing OS in the planet.

    Zeitgiest shows only one fastest growing OS, i.e Windows XP

    As long as there are clueless idiots who would believe anything Linux zealots say, "Linux is growing marketshare in desktop"

    Now is an important time for India & we will find out that whether Indians are academic smart or business smart. Hopefully they dont listen to idiots (who have their own personal agendas) and jeoperdize the only successful export industry of India

    Indians suck at manufacturing & are hardly innovative in any other field. We dont have rich natural resources(like oil). The only thing we can add value is Intellectual Property in the Information age.

    By taking the open source route we'll kill the only golden goose that'll lead to a spiralling crashing of the Indian economy & increase the number of people below poverty line to an already staggering 700 Million

    The generation of future Indians are at the hands of the developers. Dont drive the only thing which you can produce to a zero value system.

    I can see thousand of posts claiming that Linux can be downloaded for free and hence sales figures doesn't matter.

    But Linux was always available for free & all Linux users know that. This is not something which users found in 2001.

    But, say 20% of the Linux users pay, then by co-relation, more often than not the number of users are also down. If Linux server sales were up, definitely you would have seen a revenue increase

    Dan Kuznetsky, a Linux zealot, who is the VP of IDC software division, overcalculated Linux server unit figures for 2000 (at 27%) & his 2001 Linux figures came significantly low and having to eat humble pie since his Linux growth prediction didn't come true

    Seriously. I wish Advertisers use pop-up ads, atleast we know how to kill them. If they find that pop-up/under is not working, they will come up with new ways to be intrusive, Like showing a full-page ad before directing to the actual page we clicked. Ads taking 90% of the page, so that we have to click 10 "next" pages just to read a small article.

    Its like "You sing so well, You should be on radio(atleast I can switch channels) situation

    Ok people, Lets get the friggin facts straight.

    Yep lets do that shall we?. If a country has more than 70% living in poverty conditions, it is considered to be poor. 10% borders an exception than a rule. Just because there are rich people living in Somalia, Ethiopia doesn't mean those countries are not poor.

    It also helps to check the median salaries of various countries, before shooting someone's mouth off.

    Also literacy means poeple can recognize certain symbols as certain sounds. It Doesn't mean people will actually read books are even get an education.

    100% literacy is used only for govt employees to get a raise or boast during their appraisal. It doesn't mean a squat if they dont utilise it.

    Kerala could be a beautiful state, so are thousands of other states around this world

    Fighting FUD with FUD is defintely not a solution

    What were the advantages of Simputer anyway?

    Does it have economies of scale like PC has? Two years from now, would it have competed with $200 PC's?

    Does it have a familiar interface needed to succeed in a mass market?

    And why does anyone have to spend money to install simputer access points?

    How much money is needed to support its infrastructure, support, distribution, customer service, things which PC's already have streamlined?

    The whole basic idea of a hand-held is for personal use & easy mobility. If it were to be 'installed' at fixed points & 'shared' among various users, why cant you use a PC for that?

    Why wasn't money spent on installing PC's & training for poor to use the PC's instaed of some Linux zealots who thought they had some cool idea.

    It is time for the govt to stop funding these ponzie schemes & concentrate on providing technology for the masses

    SImputer is definitely not one of them, never was & never will be.
