And they have no sponsors and no judges. Good luck on this one CNet, did you really mean to launch this now? This smells like a premature launch to me. My advice: Pull the page and relaunch when you have the lists populated.
We didn't choose actually, we had to round up the groups who wanted to do this. The ones you see were the most interested. We didn't turn any groups away that offered up what we needed to make the program successful. Don't read anything into that list.
We welcome those groups, but we had a limited amount of time to corral everyone. They can still join in. This is why we posted the mentorship faq on the site.
Man, the 2 minute posting restriction is killing me today.
Students. Since the point of the program is to create new developers, we're looking to find developers around the world who have considered creating free and open source software but who have not yet taken the plunge. We felt that concentrating on the student population was a good place to focus these efforts.
Comparing the Mozilla Foundation to Microsoft makes you look like an idiot who understands neither Mozilla or Microsoft. Additionally, your elitest crap that requires a CS degree before touching a keyboard only is extremely tiring. We should try to make the internet work better and safer for everyone, and firefox is doing that.

I gotta say, if you are going to besmirch tridge, you better be have a much better reason than this. Tridge, creator of rsync and co-creator/developer of Samba is easily one of the best developers of our generation, and his character is simply beyond reproach.
That's because I want to see how things go in all the projects. Believe me when I tell you that it's not the Chris DiBona show. No one would watch...

I think you should explore your user preferences. You can shut off topics, whether it be news about Google, Wireless, Linux, etc.. anything you think there is too much of, you can make disappear.
Of course, I like the google stuff on slashdot, but you'd expect that.
As an FYI, anyone can download the wikimedia site code and content. Check it out here: Wikipedia:Database_download. So...if you really worry about Google's interactions with wikipedia, and I don't, then go make a copy:-)
20% time works pretty simply, you identify a project you want to work on, write up a design doc and have that be your 20% time. You can also put your work into an existing project at Google. You can also bunch up 20% time and take it all at once or in larger chunks than 1 day a week or whatever. Of course, Google engineers are expected to make sure that thier 80% projects are in a good place, but we trust each other to make those kinds of decisions. The trust is what makes 20% time work for everyone.
There are some caveats, but that's the broad strokes. News.google.com, Orkut and a bunch of stuff on labs came from 20% time.
As others noted, this is a view into the different ways that google schedules the crawl. Some sites get crawled more often than others, and some images are updated faster than others. And some stay in the index longer. News ones (I think) transit through the index perhaps faster than they should. I'm really going outside my level of expertise here though, So I won't go on about this too much, but I assure you that it isn't some bush administration/google partisan trickey.
In short, There is no censorship here. We are embarassed that our image index is
not updated as frequently as it should be. Expect a refresh in the near future.
In the meantime, you can just search on Google Web Search for [abu graib photos]
[abu graib photos]
to get plenty of what you are looking for.
From me:
Please don't ascribe some dating issues on images to some political motive, we take this kind of stuff very seriously. We have to comply with the law, but there is no law yet on the books reguiring that companies in the United States take down pictures that might be embarassing ot the current administration.
I didn't say that she wasn't a person, I just felt that the her past behavior is hardly redeemed by one article in wired about the CC. With regards to china/google thing, I'm not the person who talks about that kind of stuff, but I'm obviously okay with google's explanations about why if I continue to work at google. If you'd like to hold me personally responsible for that, you are welcome to do so.
Much the same way I hold her personally responsible for her decisions. Not that I expect my opinons of her to matter to her or for that matter anyone else. But hey, this is the internet...
I've been down this road before, it ain't pretty.

Basically, You gotta start somewhere.

I see 3 being pretty hard. I mean, look at how many sites keep up with that punch the monkey stuff. Number 2 is the most fun though.
Chris
PS: We are hiring, if you think you're up to the challenge :-)
