Really...at least in China they don't give a crap if you are sad. You can frown all you want. In Japan - smile or the "smile police" will get you. WTF is wrong with you? How will this do anything other then make people more annoyed. Instead of spending this time/resources on crap how about you spend this time/resources on 1) giving your employees a free lunch, 2) giving them a raise (way to make me smile), or giving them extra time off since you obviously have so much money to spend on stupid smiley police.
I agree with you. Japan comes out with some crazy ass shit. I can understand having gym in the morning (though to be honest, if I am wearing a suit why would you want me to sweat in the AM and have to wear it all day). At least the gym gets your metabolism working. This is just stupid. Japan comes out with some whacky shit. I think someone's been eating som bad sushi.
Step 1) Build awesome data center ala bunker fashion that can resist all but a direct nuclear strike ensuring number crunching in any* event
Step 2*) Build seperate dedicated energy plant, to power this awesome data center and make it known to the world ensuring the bad guys will just use conventional bombs to dsetroy that location. The data center will still be around...powerless...all systems running on 5 minute battery UPC devices.
See when they said 65 megawatts of power I figured they would build a small nuclear power plant DEEPER underground. Ensuring this place can run for a very long time. I figured wrong.
Apparantly nobody at NASA has seen Battlestar Galactica. Come on - obviously these nano-machines will evolve into cylons (and you know they will take that name just to rub salt on the wound), come back, nuke us and then hunt us through space. Don't get me wrong, as long as I get to be the equivlant of Gaius Baltar and get Tricia Heffer I am not totally closed to this futuristic outcome.
I do have a couple friends who live in another state, that I wouldn't mind playing with over BattleNet. Mostly, though, I want to play on a LAN, without needing a high speed Internet connection.
Don't worry you won't (though you and your friends most likely have this connection). battle.net was always a staging ground. You connect to it, hang out in the chatroom, and somebody starts the game. The game starter (aka HOST) runs the game from their location. So if all of you are in your friends (aka HOST) house then you will enjoy LAN speeds. Oh and if one of your other friends, who lives in another state, want to join the lan party - they can! Win-Win. The only losers are those who want to play pirated versions of the game over the lan (until someone finds a crack that is).
While I don't agree with the non-lan play, why would it be hard for you and your friends to connect to the Internet from say your friends location and their Internet connection? Obviously everyone has access to some kind of hub/router to connect to each other.
Chances are the game will be hosted on one of your friends' computers (as is games of this type), you just have to originally go through the online server. This will also allow you to include friends who cannot make it to the lan party (your pal who is away at college for example).
I would prefer LAN play - but this won't kill the game. I can understand their concern...I've been to many LAN games where one person had downloaded a hack copy of the game so 5-8 of us would play a game for free....5-8 players, none of them purchased a single copy of the game. The losers were those who invested time/money into making the product.
I thought all things launched into space were from NASA. Maybe the satellites are owned by someone else, but getting them there and maintenance was the job of NASA. I guess I was wrong....
NASA's been doing this longer. To prove their point - how did google get those satellites up into space? But even if Google won todays lawsuit...NASA just says "O'RLY?" and powers off the satellite signal "oops...sorry about that guys, don't worry it's on our list of things to do....right after our colonization of mars project is over"
I agree the paladin/shaman killed the original lore, but remember, these guys MAKE the lore..so they can change it with some story telling. But even if we agree that the paladin/shammy thing was a waste (on the story side i did think it was, but I do love shammies on alliance) the swapping factions is complete meta-gaming. You won't see humans on horde faction...more then likely swapping factions = swapping races...they should just let you swap races. If i still played wow then my human lock would become a gnome lock:)
Nah. Chances are it will be 1) pay to change and 2) give you a 60 day restriction from changing again. So if every 60 days you want to spend $20 to change sides you can do it. In all honesty, at $14.95/month it would be better to have a second game account so you can spy on the enemy. Just pay a chinese farmer to get yu a level 80 toon and you can play horde/alliance at the same time to help you gank.
BTW my assumptions do have a basis...to switch servers you have to pay a fee and can only do it every couple of months.
How conscience is the decision? When I first started the game I joined alliance because my friends told me to - but even if I joined the game on my own how would I know what is more fun? So I work my way to level 60 and figure alliance is OK> Now i want to try horde but to work level 1- 60 without any resources (after already getting those resources) is tiring. This may not be a bad thing and will give people a new chance. I can see a lot of new gnome Mage/Warlock/Rogues and a lot of Undead Mage/Warlock/Rogues.
Why not just use the landline they provide you at work at your desk?
Out of all the reasons others posted - some of which were funny, plus I never saw someone defend someone else on/. the main reason for me is that our company 1) records all calls - so I really don't want my call to the doctor recorded, and 2) they probably frown on it if someone dials to the next state (where i am from) which costs them money.
I am sure it wouldn't be a huge deal, but why take a chance. Besides, as point one, I don't want my calls recorded on my work line.
Because the chargers you buy from the misc. vendors are typically cheaper in quality. They are not as tuned to the device and may send power surges which could damage your phone. They are also not as efficient and this turns out into more energy use. Not noticeable for one person, but take into consideration that millions of people use these devices and that adds up to wasted energy.
Think of your cell phone as your home computer (mine has important contact information, some pics, etc). Do you just plug your computer into the wall or do you use a surge protector (or even UPS device to prevent spikes/surges)? I use a nice UPS. I want my computer to not be damaged...I also don't want my phone to be damaged. I'd imagine someone who spent $500 on their iPhone GS want's to protect that investment too.
It's not too much of a lock-in. I can't imagine someone saying, "Man, I'd love to change carriers, but I just don't want to have to use a new charger (which comes with the free phone I'll get). I guess I'll stick with my current carrier!"
My phone came with one charger. I keep a charger at my desk at home (so i can be on my computer and not worry about charging). But I like to have my phone by the bed in case someone calls me - so i dont have to run to the living room (plus it is a secondary alarm for me). So I need to be an additional charger. Then I need one for work (blue-tooth kills phones)...that's two chargers. Then I need one for the car (blue-tooth again, plus i travel a lot)... that's three chargers. Now I also like to connect the device to my computer to transfer files...4th accessory. I would prefer if i could just swap.
The carriers do care - a lot of the profit for the stores is accessories. They try and push this on you like candy. They buy the chargers for $2-$3 from the manufacturer and sell them for $15 to $25. That's a big profit margin. It's also why you can generally negotiate them. They get a ton of money for selling you phone/service. They are not willing to lose that money so they will give you the chargers.
;) Just sometimes feel like an old man holding out for an ideal age where people read the article (or at least admit they didn't). Then again I still hold out for the day skittles will pop sunshine out of my ass.
Overall this is a positive step. Yes current gen phone chargers/accessories won't be involved but such is life for new technology standards - some things get left behind. But from next year and on we will be using a standardized interface which will mean you only have to buy the product once. Since they are all the same expect better pricing ($20 for a charger = rip off). One of the things that kept me from going to a new product type was having to re-buy all of my accessories...i would have to negotiate with the sales person "new phone and contract needs to come with new chargers for my car, home, and work plus computer adapter or no deal"
Maybe instead of just trying to get a first post in you read the damn article.
The Commission said the agreement would involve the creation of an EU norm, and that the new generation of mobile phones would use a standard micro-USB socket to ensure compatibility.
Well this may carry over as a convenience to the US but I doubt it.(why have two plants making two different types of chargers when you can have one plant making one charger type). That why is Verizon & AT&T. They love locking people in, and since there are so many service carriers they do so with products (iPhone for one).
How does that even work? If the USD is low, shouldn't that make american products cheaper?
It's hedging their bets. They want their $200 USD. They are obviously willing to take more, but are not willing to take less. The market is volotile and in recent times the US has been on the losing end of the exchange rate. This is great for tourists coming from EU to the US, but sucks for US tourists who want to go to EU (which btw hurts the EU more then it hurts the US).
So how does this play out with products? Well MS will mass produce millions of these boxes and they will sit on shelves in the EU for years to come. MS wants to gaurantee they get their $200/box. To do so they have to set the prices high enough that if the US market continues on this downward spiral they will continue to make their $200/box. If the market goes up, or stays the same, then MS just makes more money - which is not a bad thing.
BTW if you don't buy what I said above you can always go with the answer of "MS is screwing EU over the anti-trust suit and removal of IE":)
And depending on your view on bundling IE, Europe's customers will be paying more for less, with Microsoft's decision to yank IE8 from Windows 7 in an effort to head off EU antitrust regulators, who may still force the company to take more drastic measures."/quote
No matter where you stand on the IE anti-trust issue (and i believe monopolistic practices suck) getting less product and paying more for it blows chunks.
I have IE 8 on both of my computers. I don't use IE8 (I use firefox) but at least I have the *OPTION* of using IE8. I feel sorry for EU folks who are not getting as much as the US folks are getting. As far as the cost, there is not much you can do about that since it is based on exchange rates and they are volitile. Typically companies sell products at about the same cost but exchange rates differ and they do so pretty heavily.
Anyhow - your statement looks, hmm "canned"...blink twice if you were forced to write that message;)
No, really. I find no fault in your words. It sucks that China does this but it is their choice. Denying people access to Google is not a crime in the international courts. People may not like it but gov't doesn't always make choices that people like.
OT: I particularly enjoyed how the mod trolls moded you as troll. If i had mod points I'd give you a point UP. Unfortunately I used it all yesterday
Hey morons..i mean mods - the point system is not for you to mod down posts you don't agree with. Notice the mod up points are for interesting, informative, insightful....there is no "uninsightful" mods. There is troll but the OP posters falls short of troll. It would be informative and insightful.

Your price comparison is not really good. You should compare an uncontracted iphone price (500 or 600) to that of a c64. The contract lock is worth money - especially considering how much you buy to maintain your service. THen again you get more from the contract (phone service, access to the internet, etc). So a better comparison is the straight phone price to the c64 price.

It may be top-secret areas (e.g. military installations). It would not be unheard of to institute those restrictions.
