If you're not aging, your cells will be properly reproducing and you'll be just like you were in your 30's.
Well, I'm in my thirties, and it's not the age, it's the mileage. While breakthroughs like this may extend life well past one hundred, much money will be spent on replacement knees, hips, and teeth.
While I am no Steve Jobs biographer, if I were to take a guess (which I am oddly enough), I'd say that he's more 'project oriented'. Remember Mr. Jobs sold out of Apple a number of years back, and only came back on as CEO to save it. While Pixar is still the unquestioned leader of the computer generated cartoon industry, that business is becoming more mature, and competitive. In 'business-speak' Pixar is now in it's 'Cash Cow' phase, a perfect time to sell out, and use your money for a new venture.
My guess, is that he'll sell out of Pixar at a 20% premium, and use the money to finance a new venture. If can build (or rebuild) yet another billion dollar company (or two), Mr Jobs will rightfully hold the title as the best business leader of the era, even if he's not the richest.
If slavery and civil rights were held to a popular vote, there's a good chance the laws never would have passed.
Actually, a majority of people in the U.S. supported freeing the slaves then civil rights when congress passed those laws. In fact Lincoln, who ran as an anti-slavery canidate, won the popular vote. Protecting the minority from the trynany of the majority is a noble cause, but that is more of an issue for our court system rather than the legislative branch.
I realize it's a bit passe but you might try reading the second article linked to in the blurb for a good refutation for that.
I trust not any site which allows feedback, yet still gets little critical discussion about a self-recoginized 'controversial subject'. People whine about 'group-think'. Wow that site is the definition of 'ditto-head'. Outta like the first 10 comments, 9 were stuff like 'screw Gore!', or 'damn liberals'. Yea, that's a reputable news site. Slashdot might tend liberal, but wow, I haven't heard such crap since I stopped tuning into Limbaugh (you know the pill freak) in the early 90's.
That all depends on who assassinates Hitler, and whether that person can use it to take power. If it was someone from the military, they would have been likely to get a good leader, such as Rommel.
That's the differece between an assassination and a coup.
An intelligent, charismatic leader (who knew to listen to his generals) replacing Hitler could well have sealed the fate of much of Europe.
assuming that that person was manicial enough to want to. Besides even if Germany was able to produce an advanced jet in enough quantities to make a difference, its unlikely that they would have held off against the A-bomb for more than a couple of weeks.
I feel even democracy over time leads to a kakistocracy. Eventually things become corrupt enough that the vast majority of those in power are corrupt/evil.
It should be noted that kakistocracy refers to rule by incompetents, rather than outright evil or larcenous people, as is the case with a kleptocracy
Actually, I see kakistocracy as a real problem, becuase of the charater assassination of (well at least) modern politics, tends keep otherwise well meaning/qualified persons out of the system.
What do think they're going to be using? Their cell phones? Their land lines? The mail?
d) All of the above +++
Considering that hundreds of thousands of people from the affeced areas are now outside of Katrina's path of destruction, I'd guess that many of them have access to all of the normal channels of communication in today society. Some people even have internet access in downtown New Orleans.
That's why we need assassination politics. A few well-placed deaths among the boards of the worst corporations would stop them from committing horrific crimes.
More likely they just have to increase their security budgets.
The trouble is that revenge killings tend to beget more revenge killings. In the end only the most ruthless heartless thugs tend to be the only ones left standing. Good honest people need solid 'rule of law' to support their moral character. Assassination breaks down the rule of law.
Furthermore, the power vacuum after a violent and sudden transition of power is more likely to bring a 'bad actor' to the title than someone more 'palatable'.
Using the classic example of assassinating Hitler, does anyone believe that any of his likely successors would have been less evil?
I want you to set up a "myn's" club in your local uni - our catchphrase will be "putting the myn back in womyn". Spread the meme.
uh, No, to me "men" spelled with a 'y' would indicate a transgendered person, and while I'm really open minded, I have no interest, but perhaps you do, "you go,...girl?":)
A big red button near the door, uncovered, and at the right height for a twelve yo to punch. The real question would be wether or not to hook the halon up to it.:)
Really, other than software, I'd suggest a good look at layout; are the work areas separate from the racks, perhaps even a separate area for 'problem' servers?
Is there a good size parts room (perhaps off the 'beaten path'). Can you keep people away from the cabinets by having large windows to view the 'magic area'. Nothing says 'professional' like all LCD monitors (dual is better).
Just don't let them forget the break room and the bathrooms. Also be sure to have plenty of cameras
For a touch of fun, you could install UV lighting, and reactive cables. Taking another page from the case mode handbook, liquid cooling might really 'wow' them.
depends on what class of bluetooth you are using...
class 1: 100 meters
class 2: 10 meters
class 3: less than a meter
(more info at)
most phones I've seen real specs on say that they are class 2 devices, and as far as I know pairs of class 1 and class 2 devices are limited by the shorter transmission range...So lets say 10 meters (or metres)
You're confusing two completely different things here. Web usage != browsers. Please don't fall into the Microsoft marketing ploy that equates "The Web" with "The Browser". They aren't the same.
You're right about one thing the World Wide Web and Web Browsers are not the same thing. You use one to access the other. While, XML in various formats (such as rss feeds) have begun to use HTTP transport (the defining protocol of the web) for communication, and other applications like to use port 80 (the most common port for web traffic) because most every firewall allows its use, the 'web' was made to be viewed by a web browser.
Really I think that you mean the the Internet is not the same as the Web, which is basicly true. Well really the Internet is greater than the Web), the Web is a subset of the Internet.
While MS has it's issues, I don't think that they have any confusion about the basic facts of the internet. Do you have any 'facts' to back your assertion up, or is it a simple Karma whore to the 'aways hate MS crowd'.
Why? They were on different series decades apart, who cares what he thinks any more than what Rosie O'Donnel thinks?
Duh, celebrity opinions are always more important.
AKA, more than anyone else who posts here, Wil could understand how a role on a Star Trek show can affect someone's life. Like James Doohan was, he is living a post-Trek life, forever closely identified as a character, which he played for just a few years. What's worse for him is that while most people *loved* Scottie, Wil's character didn't connect as well. I've never read much of his writings, but I'd guess that he was more than pleased when Jar Jar came along, and gave the highly critical Sci-Fi community a more hated, misconceived character to complain about.
there are several ways the a spammer can get your email address, some of them are:
Harvesting them off of the internet. Any publicly available page with a mailto eventually will get processed.
Buying from other spammers. I always know that spam will spike when I start seeing the "buy a million email addresses for $xxx." emails.
Just guessing. Most domains have 'typical' email address, spammers will often create bots which will 'guess' at common email addresses. Sure most will just bounce, but what do they care, forging the sender email is standard practice for them.
I'm sure some of the spammers have cracked a couple of machines to get at contact lists as you fear, but those machines are far more valuable to spammers as zombies, in particular for the quessing attack.
So, if you are going to be mad at MS for spam, at least be made for the right reason (Zombies).
Every country is represented at the UN, so you can still call you representative or your governement.
Personally, I perfer a representitive government. In the US we have a generally strong democracy, which will allow some of our will to trickle to the UN, but many countries are not so lucky. I have faith that a well informed voter in the middle east would elect fair leader, but nearly always they are not given the chance. The same applies to large areas of Africa, Asia, and South America. IMHO, the world is not ready for a powerful world government.
Domain names are not free anyway, so I suppose, perhaps wrongly, that a small tax would not make much difference.
Your right a 'small tax' wouldn't be 'bad', but how small is 'small'. The only thing harder than getting rid of a cruel entrenched dictator, is keeping a government from raising taxes. It's even harder than
I'll do it for cheesy poofs.
You'd fit in well at the UN, many seem willing to sell out any idea, for a small fee.
The power to tax individuals is one of the basic powers of governement. The another being direct enforcement of law on individuals, do you really want to set the UN down that road?
if everyone around the world starts using different root servers.
That a big word, 'if', the real question is 'why'. Other than a few countries and individuals who, 'just don't like it', where is the compelling reasons. Has the U.S. been a bad steward of these services? Sure one (well, many) can easily 'grip' about the policies of the (current) U.S. government, hell just poking into practically any thread on slashdot will show the anger of at least some motivated people. However most people only care that the internet works and aren't anywhere near as politically motivated as the hot heads around here.
Mandrake Linux isn't really that old of a system. I remember purchasing the 8.0 distribution at Circuit City just about 2 1/2 years ago.
That's like saying Ford isn't really that old of a car manufacturer because, I remember buying one a couple years back. Mandrake was my first successful Linux installation something like 6 years ago, IM very HO, Mandrake was the first 'easy to install' Linux distribution.
the 13 colonies had the highest standard of living in the world at the time? from my understanding it was less than that afforded to the dominated states of the roman empire.
I didn't know that the Roman Empire was still around in the mid 1700's. (you apparently didn't notice that he said "at the time" as a qualifier).
Slashdot is NOT a [complete] waste of time...Slashdot... is a great place to find best-practices for the IT world.
Too bad you can't edit your post to include that 'complete' modifier, because there is plenty of time which is wasted on slashdot, even by well minded employees. Personally, I think of it as more of a distraction, which can be valuable.
However, I do take 'offense' that the term "best-practices", perhaps I think it would be fairer to call them 'perfered practices', or the more honest 'my stupid way'. Calling them 'best' gives the impression that some sort of 'fair competition' was arranged, with all ideas presented and evaluated. Most often it's just a new buzz word, which is most often code for 'my ideas are better than anyone's ideas'.
Perhaps it could be said that I think that it is a 'best-practice' to not use the term 'best-practice', in particular when a fair evaluation and comment period doesn't happen.
Could you imagine if the western part of the United States was settled by people that needed 107 cameras pointed at their wagons to make sure that a wheel wasn't falling off before they left?
Wagons don't cost 2 million each.
When a wagon wheel falls off 7 people don't fry
You can feel a problem with a wagon wheel just from the ride. In a space shuttle you don't know there is a problem until it's way to late.
if you think you have a problem with a wagon wheel, you jump out and take a look. An EVA is a major use of resourses, both in flight and on the ground.
A foam strike isn't the only thing that a camera would catch. Remember, the first indications of what when wrong with Challenger came from video.
IMHO, the space shuttle's biggest problem was a design which said that the thing needed to have wings.
I had wanted to add a number to that post, I came up with 8.1 from that site I eventually linked. When I first saw your post I thought 'damn, I got nailed on the metro size', but alas the page said "NY State" and I could once again 'prove' my alpha geek status!
Good luck on the conquest of the City of Delaware, however the State of Delaware remains safely out of your reach.
Sorry, but that's apples to oranges, the greater NYC area, has an estimated population of around 22 million. Really it depends on how you define 'area'
Don't feel bad, all of my girl friends have told me that "bigger isn't aways better";) (Just Kidding!)
