Could it be because the webapps are crippled by design? What good is a texting app that can't access your phonebook? That doesn't work terribly well as a webapp does it, now? If you want something useful, it'll have to be written in Obj-C.

Agreed. You can also still search IMAP accounts, the only difference is it's slower than this app since the app itself downloaded copies to the phone while native search searches the server. This has nothing to do with ad revenue.

  12. BMW uses electronic throttles on Toyota Pedal Issue Highlights Move To Electronics · · Score: 1

The E46 3 series used a drive-by-wire system, no throttle cable. BMW never blamed floor mats or pedals, hell as far as I know nothing went wrong. The worst part is that they're limiting the recall to Toyota only. I have a friend who told me months ago that her throttle stuck on the highway in her '06 Lexus IS250. Toyota claims it's only the American pedal assembly but Lexus doesn't use the American pedal, it uses a Japanese-made assembly from a different manufacturer and yet it still sticks.

It seems to me that Toyota didn't do enough testing and refuses to accept responsibility to the full extent of their screwup.

TPB needs to buy a plot of land somewhere, declare it a country, establish a governing body and be out of reach of all these different jurisdictions that cave under the pressure of the MPAA, RIAA, and their international equivalents. I'd gladly pay a handsome fee to move to such a country if they promised it wouldn't be rife with real life crime. I guess that's just be being idealistic though.

Generally a pipe has two directions you can travel, in and out. Ignoring the fact that walking into a pipe is a terrible idea and probably doesn't smell like rainbows and sunshine, I find that should one feel they are "lost" in a drain they should generally travel in the opposite direction they had originally chose to travel in. Clearly things get a little hairier when you start making turns at junctions but in that case, you asked for it. In either case, they should not have been deprived of the Darwin Award.

I'm of the belief that she knew what she was doing and chose to let this girl die, even goading her on to kill herself. I don't see how this is, in any way, different than doing so in person. She should be held accountable for her actions. This woman is the scum of the earth.

I've had words with people before but I've never attempted to talk somebody into committing suicide. I also tend not to get into arguments with minors. What in the world could possibly lead somebody to think this ever sounded like a good idea?

Supervisors may make a decision (shake the magic 8 ball) here or there but after a while (an hour or so) they'll decide they're far too busy (lazy) to "rule" on these cases and tell their subbordinates (lunch buddies) to decide for themselves. At least it's a step in the right direction (We answer to no one)!

  22. Win7 vs XP Performance Tests on Windows Drains MacBook's Battery; Who's To Blame? · · Score: 1

I read an article recently that benchmarked a netbook with both Windows 7 and XP. The differences were minimal, nearly identical in all aspects. XP came out slightly ahead on every test though, by 1 or 2 points. Windows 7 has more features than XP and managed to give the user the same experience in responsiveness and battery life. I'd say that's an achievement but they could really further improve battery life further.

My Acer Centrino-based laptop running Vista used to get 1:45 max at any given time under normal operation (wi-fi on, screen dimmed) while my Macbook Pro would get nearly 5 hours under the same conditions. I did, however notice a significant drop if watching video. This leads me to believe the languages used to write these particular applications on the OS's are more efficient with their use of resources such as redrawing. Video obviously needs to reraw a lot more than my browser window so that drop was expected but I should see that parallel in Windows as well. This was not the case.

You so-called fans that are disappointed need to look at falling video game quality and thank Blizzard for sticking to their guns as they have in past years. Delay it, by all means if that means I get my money's worth. It's going to eat my soul as all the other Blizzard games have, I might as well have a good user experience while it happens.

  25. Limited application? on Zotac's Ion-Based Mini-ITX Board For Atom Debuts · · Score: 1

I may be missing something but after reading the article (GASP!) and seeing pictures, and so forth, I'm not sure this has much more practical application than a space-saving PC at home or a carputer. I can't really see myself carrying this around along with a mouse/keyboard/monitor.

It's not a gaming rig which means I won't be taking it anywhere, not that I travel with my current rig anyway. I won't knock the progress it marks in creating a lower power pc that delivers HD video, though.

Maybe this could be a good HTPC.
