  1. Change is inevitable on At Current Rates, Only a Few More Years' Worth of IPv4 Addresses · · Score: 0

IPv6 is a done deal. To borrow a quote from B5..."the avalanche has already started, it's to late for the pebbles to vote". It's even required on most networking certs now. With more adding it as time goes on. I only hope that OS companies will shift more resources into research for preventing host exploitations. As others have stated. You can use NAT to append your private IPv4 IP's to your IPv6 IP from your ISP, but that will cost a delay in latency.

I don't think you're out of line at all. The fact is that when a lot of people see a person with a uniform they get a polite yet condescending attitude. I saw this at a company I worked in the early 2000's. The help desk were told that they had to wear dockers and a polo style shirt with "Help Desk" on them. After that they would frequently get passed over for raises. They even had their vacation time cut in half. Which the janitors and maintenance staff did as well. The "white shirts" (those of us who were to wear dress shirts) didn't see these cutbacks. Unfortunately a lot of survival in the corporate hierarchy is all about perception.

  3. Re:Well, then... on Should You Be Paid For Being On Call? · · Score: 1

The only union I've had experience with is the Teamsters while I was working my way through college. They would steal money from the part-time workers (we usually worked only 35 hrs a week) all of the time. I finally quit when I work for a month and only received 2 dollars. I'm not kidding!

We were on a bi monthly pay period. The last month before I quit I got a pay check for $0.00. They pulled out union dues and decided to pull out 3 times what they should have. According to the union rep they do that to all of the part-time workers. Basically his advice was to ignore it since they do it to all of the part-timers after they've worked there for awhile. So I decided to go to the local union shop and explain the mistake. The next check they took out all of my earnings except for those $2. Which means the Teamsters stole around $700 from me. So ya, after working for a month for almost nothing I'm inclined not to work for a union shop again!

You hit the nail on the head. Whether it's right or not doesn't really enter into it once accounting is involved in the pirated software. If you're working at a place that uses pirated software, all you can really do is make sure your rear is covered if the people that own the software decide to sue.

  5. Re:Not a black mark on Is Working For the Gambling Industry a Black Mark? · · Score: 2, Informative

I think that the reason a lot of people consider it a black mark is because of the mob connection to it from the "old" days. For whatever reason people associate the entire gaming industry with organized crime. When some potential employers (granted the older ones mostly) see that you worked for the gaming industry. They wonder if you are really trustworthy. Though I think today the corporations are starting to change that perception some.

Unless my memory fails me. TOS was called Star Trek. The show from the early 2000's was called Enterprise. As far as I know there wasn't a series called "Starship Enterprise". So I'm thinking that the submitter(?) was just trying to use an example that "everyone" could relate to. So that people could think wow the future is almost here! Why does it matter what series had them and what the definition of THE is. Check out the cool tech! :)

I really only play single player. I sometimes play multi but that is only at a LAN party and very rarely anymore. I tried this whole have to connect to just play single player with Dawn of War 2 and I just don't get it. I mean if I'm sitting at the airport on a layover I don't want to have to find a WIFI spot just play some single player games. If blizzard or any other game developer does this I guess I won't be buying their games. Pitty, I really enjoy their games. All well I guess I can always use the time to read.

I never understood why a simple PDF reader needs to have enough access to a system that the vulnerabilities that are in the Adobe Reader could even exist. 11. Blizzard is getting way to controlling. on Blizzard Confirms No LAN Support For Starcraft 2 · · Score: 1

Quote "While this was a difficult decision for us, we felt that moving away from LAN play and directing players to our upgraded Battle.net service was the best option to ensure a quality multiplayer experience with Starcraft II..." Quote This is just a load of BS. I find it really hard to believe that my friends and I will be better served connecting to a service (most likely in another state) and wait for the lag to get through the time of setting up a âoegame roomâ that we have to password protect to keep the random Bnet kiddy from popping in and spamming âoego go goâ. They are looking for a new way to pump advertising to people plain and simple and to suggest otherwise is just downright insulting. I had played WoW (and most every other Blizz game) since before the release and finally gave up because of their attitude: we are going to control every aspect of how people play our games and funnel them into having the fun we want them to have. They will probably pull the crap that the people that made Dawn of War 2 did. Where you have to have an internet connection just successfully install and activate the single player. On the bright side with the gaming companies starting this crap I will have more time to spend outside.
