Wow, where do I start... Let's keep it short. First, this country is not a democracy, even though we espouse the democratic concepts. It's something called a representative republic. If your school failed to teach you that, or you failed high school civics, then go look it up, I'm sure wikipedia has an article on it.
Second, no town or person can do "whatever they want". If they could, it would be an anarchy and there would be no town ordinances in the first place. Don't forget that they have to follow rules as well (state & federal), and if you let people do whatever they want, they will eventually do stupid or unfair things that just hurt themselves or other people. (Remember slavery? It's an extreme example, but totally valid to represent what happens when you let the 'majority' do what they want.)
Third is the communist thing. We'll ignore the original utopian concept that communism was meant to be and go with the more modern variant based on the old Soviet Union and the current China. Hmmm, a government setting a restrictive rule that limits both corporate endeavors and public access to communication utilities/resources. Yep, that qualifies as modern communism. But that's the opposite of your declaration... Yeah, speaking of failing high school civics, I think we've got your number.
Just a small note on utopias. There are many different utopian theories, and they are all interesting but fatally flawed. I don't believe in the possiblity of any form of utopia existing until after all of humanities basic psyche has been severely altered, and that isn't happening any time soon, if ever.
Looks like it's time to take the gene samples and archive recordings of them because we need something to program the clone based replicants with in about 180 years.
As I understand it, that's usually the case, but once in a while, they're so confident in their bogus patents they'll agree to a money back clause. SCO made one, but I forgot who it was with. Of course, the subsequent legal wrangling and loss by SCO wiped out all their money, so I doubt that company got back any of the money it was owed.
Say what?!?! Reality is Truth. Even though there are a bunch of duplicitous scum that will improperly claim various beliefs, ideals, or flat out lies as truth doesn't change what truth, or reality, actual happens to be.
Yes, but the way the comprehension and quality has been decaying at virtually all publications on any subject just exasperates the situation with tech and science. (How many times this year have you seen headlines that were completely false? I'd bet it's at least double digits.)
Mouse is in my left hand, but it's stupid to switch it's buttons. I hate the wasd controlled games because I have to reach my right hand across the keyboard and hold my wrist at an odd and painful angle to use them. These days if a game uses wasd and doesn't let me switch them, I send a bug report to the devs and if they don't rapidly reply with a fix, I throw the game away. (It's not rage, it's just there's no game out there worth the pain, literally.) For one recent example, Fantasy Earth Zero.
Also, I hate the so called egonomic things. They are usually only designed for righties. Often the companies claim to have a left handed version, but funny thing, no stores carry them, and you probably can't even get it when you contact the manufacturer either.
In this day and age with the ease of configuring interfaces it's just plain moronic to blow off 10%-15% of your potential audience because you customize an interface for only one handedness.
Lefties already have to do a lot of stupid (and sometimes painful) things just to get by when idiots design things only for righties. Sounds like you'd like us to go back to the days when teachers bound a lefties hand behind their back to force them to learn to do things right handed. And even though you can learn to do things acceptably well with your non-primary hand, it's been shown to never be as effective as having the same training for your primary hand.
And no, I no more expect to, or am willing to, train up my non-primary hand to play a game than you are.
Exactly, it wasn't about them being on his private plane, is was about them being in the secured and screened to have no weapons part of the terminal. Swords, shurikens, knitting needles, uzis, etc, they don't care, you can't have them in that area or on their planes. And since you can't get to your plane without going through their area where those things are banned, tough luck.
( I saw one place where it was determined that the city/county couldn't ban alcohol from the beach, but they could ban it from the access road and parking lot. If you wanted a kegger, you had to have someone carry it the appx 3 miles to the beach through the dunes.)
Maybe they should have a double conference with the Flat Earthers, of course that level of concentrated of willful ignorance in the face of overwhelming proof in one location might have unforeseen side effects.
I guess that judge would consider renting and leasing to also have no expectation of privacy. So anybody that's renting or leasing something, especially a home or car, is screwed. Heck, even having cable tv would make your entire viewing habits obtainable with that his interpretation.
IMO the judge is an idiot. To have ANY paid for service, you have to provide that information to the provider. In no way does providing information necessary to the provider a waving of rights to privacy other than the minor level done with regards to the information the provider needs, and then, only with regards to the provider.
Sorry, but I think we need to get rid of a lot of these judges that would rather screw the public than to be fair and just. I know in some places you can vote them out, and others, it's a till they die/retire thing. Are there any other means like yelling at politicians until they do something? (Maybe letting the individual judges know how you disagree with their B.S. might help, but I doubt those types would give a rodents donkey about the public and what it/they think.)
Many places here in the USA have laws against driving with headphones on, even though we are driving in cars that have more and more soundproofing and those without headphones are often playing their car stereos far louder than the effective volume the headphones could ever generate. (There are a bunch of idiots around here that often have their car stereos so loud you can clearly make out the song from inside my apartment 2 blocks away, and the windows are shut.)
If it's a safety issue, they should mandate that cars have no soundproofing on the cabin and that any radio/stereo/etc can exceed a maximum decibel level equivalent to normal conversation at any time. That isn't going to happen, but still, it points out both the folly and stupidity of such rules. Screwing with pedestrians who listen to headphones while wandering around is just as stupid.
Gotta agree with you on this, even Apple is more closely related to Microsoft than that.:) But this is slashdot where flaming microsoft is an instinctual activity for many people no matter how (in)accurate it may be.
I think it's more along the lines that as long as the companies are legally allowed to throw lawyers and regulators at each other, they will. The whole good for the goose/gander junk. Of course, that doesn't mean it's right or ethical, much less 'good', but it is something that's done. (Some would argue that it's actually a form of underhanded evil corporate activity. IMO Google gave up their mantra a long time ago, but I wouldn't call this type of stuff evil, just scummy.)
They didn't bully anyone int giving up Linux, they just flat out took it away. YOINK! If you were bullied into giving it up, that presumes you'd had a choice, even if it means you would get beaten up if you didn't comply.
The media has been training people for generations that a copilot is even more important than those multiple engines. Whether or not it's actually safe is moot, people won't except it because the people think it's unsafe. And if the people think it's unsafe, they won't fly you airline.
I'd actually bet that if given a choice between an automated plane with multiple backups and remote piloting capability, or a plane with just a pilot but no copilot, I'd bet slightly more people would choose the robot plane.
we can't read your encrypted messages and are too stupid or too lazy to crack them ourselves, so won't you please give us the golden master keys to the kingdom?
There's also the fact that certain words and phrases have crept into modern language that some people assume the usage of denotes being a religious christian. Things like: Oh my god, what in gods name are you doing, jesus christ, god bless you, and many many more.
The internet has become for data of all sorts (including money) the equivalent of the rail and highway systems. Shutting it down won't directly harm things, but it will indirectly trash large parts of our industry and economy. Sure, we could have prevented everyone from using it in this way, but if you really want to a hot tub time machine, go rent the movie. We are no more likely to be able to go backwards on this as we can on electricity.
The short version is our systems, industrial, social, and economic, took advantage of a new and efficient resource and would be utterly unable to sustain itself without it, nor can they revert to the previous state without suffering serious damage.
Wow, where do I start... Let's keep it short.

So that's why they only show Mother Nature with a broom... I did not think of that before.
As I understand it, that's usually the case, but once in a while, they're so confident in their bogus patents they'll agree to a money back clause. SCO made one, but I forgot who it was with. I saw a job posting that required 10 years experience with a program that had only existed for 6 years.

There are millions of people in this country, so there are bound to be a few nutjobs, but I'll admit we seem to be running above average lately...
