Patents should have to be the property of a person not a corporation llc etc. And they should not be sellable. If the holder dies or becomes incompetent the patent becomes invalid. So easy and simple to fix the patent system. Too bad the big corps will never let it happen.
I am not a product I am a free man. Ok google you are making money of me , then I want my cut. I think 80% of every dollar you make sounds fair. Oh and don't try and tell me your "free" products are my payment because those are making you money not costing. Google is evil.
This is an idea I came up with back in the way past the first time I found out a company sold my phone number. I was outraged. What right did these people have to sell my phone number. So I came up with the idea that all information about me, whether public or not, should be considered my private property. My email address, phone number, address, what I search for, what I shop for, should all be considered my personal intellectual property. If you wanna make money off it you have to come negotiate a contract with me.
Now I have removed myself from facebook because as I've said for years, facebook is evil. Now I am considering how to decouple myself from google because I gotta admit google is evil.
What we ultimately need is to take this stuff out of the hands of the corporations. Our online identity, search, and extremely important communication systems such as twitter and facebook should not be controlled by corporation with ulterior motives. It's frightening to realize how important this stuff was to the situations in Egypt or Tunisia and you realize a corp could just shut that stuff off. I have a daydream every once in awhile wherein the UN comes along to google, facebook, twitter, etc and says "Sorry boys this stuff is WAY to important for the future of society. It's not yours anymore it's everybody's.
Reading the article doesn't add much credence to what they are claiming. Seems like an advertisement for some fringe group. The article is lacking in scientific explanation. How do they know there's water on the planet etc...
I am a little frightened by the willingness of most of you to accept this without any corroboration. Searching the web I find no real reporting on this just blogs already predisposed to an anti-lawenforcement bias. And these blogs are just linking to the original story. Not saying it didn't happen, things like this do sadly happen, but shouldn't we have a higher standard.. I mean this isn't digg.
I have some vague memory from around 97 of seeing a demo of a 3d web browser where the pages of the website were textures on the walls of something that looked like wolfenstein 3d level. It reproduced the navigation of the site in the layout of the level.
It never came out. I believe it was a university project.
Is it odd that that made me like google more? It seems like a place that I would like. I place where a person can be creative and free from bureaucracy. A place where ideas can foster and be developed quickly.
But I've never worked at either place so what do I know.
I work with Argonne and am involved with the HPC world. Sadly this article doesn't include a link to the actual top500 that would clear this mess up. http://www.top500.org/lists/2008/06
The #1 computer, the one over a petaflop, is RoadRunner at Los Alamos.
#2 is a bluegene machine from the DOE
#3 is Intrepid at argonne.
It's not clear to me how they could be so wrong in the article.
FTA "Classically the associated diseases are the following: rheumatoid arthritis, menopause, hypothyroidism, acromegaly, end-stage renal disease, pregnancy, and obesity. "
I wasn't aware pregnancy had been declared a disease:)
I'm trying to think of the last time I read an article by Dvorak, and said "You know, he's got a good point". This exact article. I've been bringing these same points up many people in my circles gung-ho for services based programs.
I worked as a system engineer on the supercomputers at NCSA from 97 till 2000. Once they are up and stable they are pretty much pushed to the limits. The users are constantly pushing for more procs, more memory, more storage. They'll use every flop they can get.
I've lamented slashdot sliding into digg land lately, but reading this has shown me important ways slashdot is way above digg.
First, the depth of discussion. People are posting multi paragraph intelligent statements and responding to each other without rancor. People seem to actually have some grasp of the topic. On digg the comments would be, "BUSH TEH DEVIL hax his internets."
Secondly, despite the fact the headline is inaccurate and somewhat inflammatory, on digg the headline would have been, "BREAKING CONFIRMED: Bush tells american public to FUCK OFF"
This tactic has worked well for apple over the last ten years.
keeping the incompetent employed.

I can't decide if he's awesome or nuts. I am going with awesomely nuts.
Not a shock to see this in the People Republic of Illinois
The somebody invents and corporations steal it act of 2011

Is apple trying to patent an actual invention?
Alien Crustaceans. It's a zerg drop.
I know facebook is that thing that people who don't know about computers use
No No No.. you are behind the times.. now we blame everything on Apple..... and sometimes google.
I prefer the imagery of Apple as Stalin trying to control all the means of production.

Wolfram is located a few blocks from me in Champaign Illinois
