You'd be amazed at the number of vehicles you pass when driving the speed limit.
I bought a new truck a few months ago and I drive it at the speed limit because thats how the vehicle is comfortably driven (as opposed to 10+ over in my sports car). The thing that still shocks me is how I still pass 90% of the cars on the freeway. Its amazing. In fact I get passed almost at the same frequency whether I'm driving the truck or my other car at 10+ over the limit.
Thats a really good point that I hadn't thought about. The solution though is really easy. Print one copy of the vote which is to be turned in at the polling place for later verification, and also print out a reciept that allows a person to show that they've voted without revealing their vote.
Really the system should solve the only problem we currently have: recording without ambiguity the voters intent.
To do this all we need is a kiosk where someone votes and the results are printed out format to ease scanning but is still human readable. That piece of paper would be given to the appropriate official at the polling place, and would be the ultimate vote. The security of the kiosk is completely irrelevant. We already trust machines to tabulate our punch card ballots, but these are be easy to audit, anytime, anywhere.
You obviously have no idea how big the Pentagon is. It is larger than either World Trade Center tower. Its just not very tall. The scale is almost not believable.

So your above passage about nuclear bombs not being that strong is looking rather incorrect now.
The point is that no matter how big the area of 'total destruction' is, there will be an even bigger area that is hit by a shock wave/debris/etc and not vaporized. In those areas it would help to protect yourself, even if only under a desk.
If a Unix name is soo important for OS X why not get it certified.
Actually Apple is calling OSX unix and OpenGroup is suing them. Both are standing their ground, so we'll see whether or not OSX can be called unix in a few years.
understanding of what the Matrix was for violated the second law of thermodynamics.
Maybe this will call into question why the matrix exists at all. Maybe people originally submitted voluntarily to the matrix for some reason. Smith did say that they originally made the matrix a paradise.
FWIW I thought reloaded sucked, the effects were terrible- several scenes looked like a video game. The story and dialog were lame. Maybe it will all come together with revolution, but I kind of doubt it.
remoted a.22 caliber semi-auto wouldn't using it be legally similar to being there in person?
Unfortunatly some states (CA being one) you can't use deadly force to defend your property. You can only use it to defend your life (or families, etc). Whether or not you were defending your life can actually be very subjective...
Its not like TN where you can shoot trespassers after dark (or so I've heard- may just be a myth).
If this sounds reasonable to you its probably because you've lowered your expectations too much.
I own a mac which has the perfect music listening/organizing software. Even if (and they won't!!) Sony ports their app to OSX I would still have to switch between iTunes and Sony's app to listen to my music. This doesn't even cover my other legitimate uses that involve iTunes and a CD burner...
On the other hand I haven't bought anything made or published by Sony in over two years, so this won't affect me, yet.
A lot of other people here seem to think so too, and I'm wondering the reason. He was on a radio morning show back in '93 for an hour or two, and he was the biggest a-hole I think I've ever heard. Has he changed? I'm not sure how old he was at the time, but certainly old enough to know better...
IANAL, but I would geuss it's so that the person who is at fault can be determined. It's also required that you avoid accidents at all times when possible...
Some examples of when a driver in the US would not be at fault for hitting a ped: -Person steps off curb in front of moving vehicle. -A person walking/crossing at night is hit
In both cases the ped is violating the law (which makes him at fault)...
In normal conditions every driver would probably be held to the 'avoid the accident' standard, but if you have a good argument why you couldn't avoid it, then pedestrian loses. (well really the pedestrian loses no matter what;-) )
The value of the stock, ultimately, is nothing but the present (i.e., discounted) value of the stream of future DIVIDENDS. Dividends are vital, since if the company doesn't pay out something, someday, why own it?
Dividends are definately the missing piece in the current stock market. If companies were forced to pay healthy dividends (through market forces or regulation) we would be better off today. Part of the issue is that the tax rate needs to be adjusted so that capital gains tax is not less that taxes on dividends (preferably by lowering dividend taxes). One of the many nice side effects is that companies like Enron and Adelphia wouldn't have billions in the bank for management to creatively steal.
Drugs are illegal, yet it doesn't do much to stop the trafficing in them, and they are socially frowned apon. Most folk couldn't care less about piracy.
Imagine getting pulled over for speeding, broken headlight or maybe just a random stop. The cop notices a custom burned CD (pirating paraphernalia) in the car and now has probable cause to search the car, seize your laptop sitting in the back seat and throw you in jail. Now even if you're never convicted of a crime, you'll never get your CDs or laptop back, and while they're at it they'll probably seize the car too, auction it off and keep the money
This is pretty far fetched. I think the laws are almost there, but we probably won't see enforcement on this level.
BTW just in case you don't realize it this is the kind of thing they do to drug users (and I'm not one...)
Yeah, I also lose satalite signal during big storms, but when I had cable I would lose it on a sunny afternoon.
All in all the total downtime is about the same, but at least I have an idea of whats going on when I lose the satelite.

Yes, but she wasn't rear-ended either. The guy in front was backing up at her...
Still it boggles the mind what the trucker was thinking...
He once had his administrative assistant return the call of someone who challenged McBride to a fight--to get a time and place,
If you need your secretary to play interference for you then its not worth bragging about.
If he was really gung-ho about fighting he would have called himself.
They were pulled over, out of state car (NJ) so searched, found the drugs in her purse...
Why in gods name did she let them search her purse???

Thats a very good point. I don't know about all of them, but Entourage (from M$ :-( )allows you to disable all network connections while viewing mail.

Are you saying that the CGI was well done?
I noticed that with a lot of the CG. It looked like CG - like a REALLY good video game or something, but I could still see that it was CG
Yes, it looked like a pixar film. Unfortunatly I didn't go to see a cartoon.

oil in the ground is NOT old dinosaurs... ...never run out of oil because it will replenish itself
My friend (a Petroleum Engineer...) is fairly convinced of this, but I still haven't heard or seen anything mainstream about it.
Anyhow, I think that for a single movie, Caves Of Steel would be a better choice.
I second that. Of all of his books I think it would adapt the best.

Anyway, for the record, I play RPGs, I don't have a job, I watch lots of anime. According to you I "have no life".
No doubt, the biggest obstacle in my life is the fact that I have a job...

idea of the capital secceding from the country lol
Actually your idea is sounding better and better...
District of Columbia at 519,000! (1999 estimated)
That would actually be a good plan... except DC residents have no voting rights, and no representation in Congress.
