    in case you haven't noticed most contries control their own domain name registrars(owned by their respective goverments). Ever see .uk, .de, .za, .ca, .cx(don't forget the all famous christmas island domain goatse.cx) etc...? The united states goverment already owns ONE not too used domain, .us. It is the .com .net .org, etc... which is in question. besides the goverment did good with the .us register, half the price of .com/net/org(us citizens only though).

    they don't need to, all they have to do is bribe FBI agents, who do you think REALLY controls this country anyhow?? Who decides who gets elected into office?? Major companies(like microsoft, oil co's, at&t, AOL-timewarner etc...) pretty much decide what you hear see and who you vote for. The goverment can do very little to stop them.

    Only if... for the most part I hated MacOS, no command prompt, propreitery, but from what I heard about MacOS X, I like, even to the point if I had the money I'd buy a mac just for OSX. I deffinately think Mac should give up on the hardware end and start porting MacOS for x86, it would be a hit, easy to use (semi)secure *nix interface for the home PC compatible with virtually 99.9% of desktops and workstations out there.     Grand Theft Auto 3 is the best thing to ever happen to consoles, I am a die hard PC gamer and I would consider getting a PS2 just to play GTA3. Its got the right combination of action, gameplay, huge + detailed map, and enough sensles violence in case you ever get bored with the storyline and feel like killing things.

    hey hey hey thats not fair...You take WinXP shitty half assess NT based OS, vs a smooth well thought out BSD based OS It would be intresting to see both theese machines benchmark on the same OS set up with same configurations and specs... Most mac users are overfanatical assholes, but I am intrested to see how the hardware really stacks up, when done by an independant third party

    Legalized Abortion- woman's right to choose. once a baby is living, still in the womb its part of the mother... plus in case you haven't noticed we have a fucking population problem, who are you to tell a mother she has to keep a kid she didn't want/can't afford/will probably abuse. Think of the kid, what type of life would the kid have...Don't give me that "you don't know what that kid is going to be" cause we all know what happens...especially to teen parents...don't forget that, you can preech birth control/absenece all you fucking want but teenagers are not going to listen, you remeber being a teen right??? Some might, but there will always be teenagers having unprotected sex, I do not agree with it, but it is futile to try, not to mention in most cases harrassing/aggravating...

    Legalized Euthinasia - again we have a population problem, letting people who are hopelessly ill and WANT TO DIE kill themselves would help.

    what the fuck is everyones problem, why does everyone assume every move made by every goverment everywhere is evil. Come on, this is a good move done by a goverment for once. you should stop looking for hidden motives and enjoy the fact that somewhere out there there is a goverment not run by a deush-bag from texas who values a 1984 style goverment. Germany is making an already free technology more available to its citizens. I will give the German gov a BIG thumbs up about this one. No doubt there are many coders that will check to make sure there is no backdoor in the software, and if there is, you'll hear about tommorow on theregister.co.uk and /. the day after that.

    Also another big thumbs up to germany from going from nazisim in WW2 to where they are today.

    personal encryption is not primarly to keep information from the goverment, but to keep information away hackers/script kiddies/packetsniffers/etc... And guarrantee privacy. If it keeps an evil goverment from finding out your plans/information, good, but that is not the primary use/need. Also, goverments should not be able to access private systems period unless a prior warrent has been obtained.

    I must agree with you completely, but with me it wasn't until I started going out of my way to fuck with the bullies did they stop. That was in 8th grade. Last year my senior year in high school,the same kids tried to get me to help them in a fight. I just looked at them and laughed.

    If it was serious, you really need to do you research before you post. MCSE certifies you as an idiot with an ego. an MCSE makes sure you know how to wipe your ass without calling techsupport but not much else.

    Tis one night in a lone server room back in '86 Jeff was working late nights doing one last backup before calling it quits that fatefull halloween. When the cops came they said it was a hardware overheat that caused the fire, but some say it was force more sinister than a stuck part inside a tape drive.

    As the server room burned Jeff was able to send out one message into the `net before he and all the equipment burned. For three days afterwards the burnt server's IP address countinued resonate as a ghost on the backbone system, softly echoing its finaly help message. In 1990, halloween a system adminstrator recived an eerie message from the IP address 234.0.0.1, via udp packet. "Help me!" it cried. The next day, server was burn to a crisp, and an email with the text 311002 apearing in the body. What happened is still a mystery, but sometimes late at night if you watch your incomming connections, you might for a gimplse second see a ping packet from a server long ago, but be warned, just like any real ghost, it leaves no trace in the logs...

    Yesterday(9/11) I was in school(NJCU), all classess where canceled at about 10:30. Before campus was evacutated, I found a computer and went on IRC. Since I was only 3 miles away from Manhatten, I was asked what I saw. At first it seemed like a bright sunny day, until I looked towards the city and saw a massive cloud of smoke rising from that dirrection.     if Bush missle defense system was implemented, the planes would have been shot down before they hit, LONG before!!! the son-of-star-wars missle defense system is only in its infancy, and the missle acuracy rate, is about 2 out of 5, meaning it would probably do more damage to the city than the enemy plane. THAT is why it is not implemented. personally I don't see why the defense missile system was banned by international treaty. although shaky in practice, its a nifty way to stop a nuclear attack, OR some dumb fuckhead who hijacked an airplane and wants to do some damage with it

    I knew it was bad news a year and a half ago when VA bought out Andover.net. At the time the /. crew, as I remeber, was buzzing about their new high end VA linux systems they were getting out of the deal, and could not see the inevnable corperate takeover of slashdot. Yes VA said they would give slashdot editorial freedom, but things have gone downhill ever since they where bought. That, and a serious crack down on trolls. Come on, "First Post" is(or shoud I say was), a big part of /. culture.
