It's true that RapidShare is used for piracy but the same applies to other similar sites too. They could start combing and limiting their uploaded content but taking in account their huge amount of uploads that wouldn't be an easy process. Also, the contents of the uploads can't be figured out just by reading the names. Trying to control the content uploaded would only cause people to switch to another similar services.

  5. Out of Beta on DRM-Free Games Site GOG.com Gone · · Score: 4, Interesting

Like others have already said, this is most likely a marketing stunt for getting out of beta. Yes, they have been in beta for the last 2 years and like the message in the site says, "we've decided that GOG.com simply cannot remain in its current form". At no point do they really say that GoG is gone. They mention change and that you will be able to re-download the games you have bought. They also had a promo running and this "announcement" happened on Sunday, which would be highly unlikely if this was a real site closing situation. A real closing announcement wouldn't come suddenly out of the blue without any previous indications of internal or external problems that caused it, nor would they do it on Sunday when most of the workers (and boss staff) are not working.

In what appears to be a setback for Hollywood and the recording industry, the government said that it sees problems with the methodology used in studies those sectors have long relied on to support claims that piracy was destructive to their businesses. The accountability office even noted the existence of data that shows piracy may benefit consumers in some cases.

Yes, it seems that it does indeed mention media industry for more than a name in the graphs in the full report. That and bootleg footwear. Glad to see that they questioned the studies about the damage to economy caused by piracy at least considered the potential beneficial effects of piracy and.

Sure, this also includes the good old pirate dvds that are sold, but it doesn't seem to give much attention to p2p pirating and such. It's mostly about pharmaceutical products.

  15. IQ on Why a High IQ Doesn't Mean You're Smart · · Score: 1

IQ tests measure only certain predetermined parts of human brain capacity. The problem with IQ tests are that it is hard to create an universal definition of "intelligent", and thus, what to measure. There are also many things that affect the results of those tests like current emotions, how well your brain has experience in such tasks and level awareness. Anyway, Stern, who created the bases to modern IQ tests never meant those tests to be used to compare people and their level of intelligent. People have to remember that intelligent behavior, mathematic power, short term task memory, wisdom, experience, knowledge, social intelligent and many others are all different things. It is pretty much impossible to measure humans mental capacities in a way that they would be comparable to other people.

  17. Fragmentation on No Cheap Replacement For Hard Disks Before 2020 · · Score: 2, Interesting

I for one, just like many others, prefer hard disks over solid-state because of their more predictable lifespan. Solid-state drives tend to slowly lose parts of their usable sections. Even though the good old hard disks tend to break easily, at least I can defragment them without slowly starting to damage the disk. Yep, there are 2 different kinds of solid-state drives which handle this problem differently, but I still don't think the technology is matured enough yet. Perhaps in a few years. As for the mini laptops and such, solid-state seems to be superior though. Many of the first mini laptops used solid-state, but now only very few have them. Why this direction of development?
