Could, for example, some little bastard at home throw off his cable provider's network by routing all traffic to his neighbor's house, by re-signaling some router that doesn't know better, using his neighbor's MAC address?
Unless Im talking out my ass here (quite possible, IANANetworkExpert) this sounds like it has the potential to be a DOS-like attack without the hassle of finding machines to carry it out. Just re-route and watch the overload, like an ICMP storm against a 14.4...
Slower speed = uses less fuel = more power because they don't need to shut the generators off everyday (i'm guessing). Then again there may be some other reason for this, I'm no AC genius by any means.
Oh, and no pun intended. I mean, we all know the A.C.s know everything.;-)
Google didnt' patent "the search engine". Their method was designed by them and is theirs. Just like CompuServe owns LZW compression in GIF images. You are free to make your own similar page rank method to compete with Google's. If you think there is no other way to do it then you don't belong in the search engine business. Don't want to be in the search engine business? Why do you care then?
It's sad when the word "patent" suddenly makes a company "the enemy". Patents have plenty of valid uses and that's the reason they exist. Google hasn't abused this patent yet. Stop pointing your little FUDing finger until they do.
Basic G4 tower systems, single CPU 1.25GHz start at $1500. iMacs are even cheaper and they feature a G4 as well, although at a slower clock, plus it comes with a screen. And yes, I've seen a few pro studios with flat-panel iMacs as workstations, especially for working with audio.
Consumers can spend a hell of alot less than $2500 and get quite a decent machine.
Unfortunately, you speak the truth. True "sceners" are starting to crop up, though, I've seen alot of "Music is my drug." t-shirts lately, but, what are ya gonna do...
Again the mask trend is exagerated. masks are often worn by people who can't stand the smokey, poor ventalated venues that raves originated in and are being forced back too. Some people just cna't dance and breathe heavy in all that smoke. I know sometimes I get home from a party and blow my nose and it comes out black - the "rave soot" phenomenon. Yuck.
Of course, then, someone who was all about the fucking drugs came up with putting vicks in a mask and walking around with it on while rolling, for a constant menthol buzz. Same reason you can't stop smoking Newports when you're rolling, anything stimulating like lights, smells, touch, or sound (read: lasers, vicks, bass, and more bass) makes the trip all that much beter. That's why it so popular at raves.
PS Not all ravers have the whole douchebag kandy look. I usually go in (huge) baggy kakhis and a white hoodie, myself. Plenty of jungle kids will give you shit for wearing kandy. I dont' mind it a little bit but overall, kandy is about drugs, anyone who tells you different is a hypocryte and anyone who tries to make it different is wasting their time on a lost cause. It's cute kiddies, but sorry, I've been there, deeper than you think, and I know.;-)
If you dipped a whole pacifier in acid, you'd probably die, espeically if you where doing E. Candyflipping == heart attack. Back in my kandy kid days (*sigh* yes yes *hangs head*) we just used them while on Ecstacy so we wouldn't bite our damn lips off.
Anways,it's unnessisary, I can still get away with taking acid. I can wipe acid on the underside of my hat, and wear it in. Worked for Hendrix. Or I can just not be a retard and take my drugs just after I park my car. 25 minutes in line and it's just hitting me when I'm inside and free.
Here in Mass, water bottles, cigarettes, and plastic jewlery have all been considered "drug paraphenalia" by police breaking up *legal* raves.
They've been better about it lately, but c'mon, a bottle of water? Cigarettes? I can almost see that, if they check and find that it's not water or the cigs are dippies or something... but how do you get high off plastic jewlery???
Oh well, kandy ravers get annoying after a while anyways;-)
If the convicted monopolist that is Microsoft prevents other operating systems from being run on OEM hardware, they not only just completely and blatantly broke the law, but also a COURT ORDER instructing them to follow said laws.
Microsoft can't be THAT stupid. No way. They can afford lawers who would know better than to let them just do that.
It's good when security exploits become public because then everyone knows the details and can do something about it. Sure, the "hackers" get the knowledge too, but then it's a race to implementation, and they won't hit as many systems as they would have had no one been prepared.
What exactly can you do about biochemical weapons except buy a gas mask and pray?
(P.S. The George Dubbya method is less than feasable for most people.)
They are afraid of misuse. They don't want people running warez servers or spam sites. Thank you, $krypt K1ddi3z.
It's a sad world when an ISP can be held reponsible for user misuse. It's not like the electric company is the party responsible when somebody throws a toaster in a bathtub with someone else in it...
Until this article I had never even heard of a.name TLD. Perhaps if more people knew it existed? Most average people are still stuck on.com anyways. I tell them my website's address, 4am.kicks-ass.net (yay DynDNS), which ends in.net, and they call me up complaining it doesnt' work. Some of them put.com, some of them actually put.net.com, and still others put www.4am.kicks-ass.com. Point being, how many people are going to get bounced e-mails from frank@rizzo.com or frank@rizzo.name.com?
Also, once I get this TLD I need to do something with it. After I pay for hosting or a mail server setup (which is what most people woudl probably want a.name for), this becomes a little more expensive than simply being "gt3trkj3p6@verizon.net"...
The Mac has always been an all-in-one box, that's one of it's marketable advantages: Apple made the hardware and the software to work together. That's how the product was initally designed, and if you don't like it there are other hardware/software platforms.
Oh yeah, and there are other OSes for Apple hardware, such as your favorate, Linux.
Microsoft suddenly requiring Windows to be run on special Microsoft made boxes only would be a bait-and-switch and would most certainly be a dirty tactic. Now that everyone has their OS, *suddenly* they are forcing sales of hardware on customers, too? The world would SCREAM bloody murder and M$ would be right back in court.
So stop confusing the two. People who own Macs knew what they where getting into when they bought one. Apple didn't suddenly spring this closed architecture after years of offering their widely-compatable OS.
(PS: As far as price goes, if you made custom computers, i.e. non-x86 systems, that only held 5% of the market, I'm sure you'd charge much higher price, too. Especially when your R&D is so good it inspires the other computer manufactures' to make immidiate cheap knock offs and, one or two years later, practical and "non-infringing" knock offs.)
In a big way. Well put, my feelings exactly (spelling errors and all;-) ).
As for the article, pure rubbish. Unrelentless ranting. Science fiction.
In the end, the next months will try NASA as never before. It has tried to convince its public that going into space is safe, when it is not. Once is an accident, twice is a defect.
Space is about as safe as a highway of drunk drivers, always has been, always will be. How can you say for one minute NASA should make it look easy to go 100km up at 17,580mph, in 394 degrees K tempatures, sustain it, and then accurately drop back to the planet and hit a runway in Florida, startng the decent as far back as the Pacific?
NASA and all the others who have worked on the Shuttle have worked miracles over the years. I for one am glad they went ahead at whatever the cost, because wasteful or not, we're further ahead of where we were.
Perhaps then, along the articles lines of thinking, we should ban cars, because they have failed more than once, and the auto industry is just pissing awaay our hard earned dollars. I suspect the author uses a computer with Windows? Better not save any data on it, as "Microsoft wants us to believe our hard drives are safe, when in fact they are not. Once is an accident, twice is a defect."
(OK Maybe he'd be right on the last one.)
My point is: Shit happens. There will be accidents. Build a new space plane, it will crash at least once. So will the next one. And the one after. Let us not forget, launching a rocket into space that comes back down safely is the most dangerous, costly, complex thing mankind has ever done. And with good reason: It is the greatest thing mankind has ever done.
Same goes for the deep-link fanatics. Create a 0px wide frame (basically invisible) the encompases the entire browser window content area and then load pages in there, on server side checking the HTTP_REFERER and on the client side, using JavaScript to ensure the documents are loaded inside the proper frame (which could have a static name or one that is dynamically allocated to each session, even). Make it run over SSL so no one can "steal" those URLs "in transit".
Is it really just easier to sue everyone than to pay a grungy guy in a t-shirt like me to set up your server to do this?
Ahh, I get it, it's the return you make on the "investment" in your lawyer.

Wouldn't I imagine a herd of these?
True, but many OS vendors include a GUI + API/Libraries to code against it, Windows and Mac OS being the obvious big names...
There's no contract saying you won't take pictures through my bedroom window, but you could still be violated for selling them.
Aren't there laws against cruel and unusual punishment? *rimshot*

Something about the names of the Intel chips sounding like crappy soccer-mom cars sketches me out about all this.
