Funny how Microsoft say that using the word Vista (Vista is the name of another product) in "Windows Vista" is OK, but they didn't like "Windows Defender" They quote "The name Vista is commonly used by a variety of companies in a variety of industries," she said. "We are only using the word Vista paired with our trademark Windows so the two together -- 'Windows Vista' -- form the name of our next operating system." http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstech nology/2002397450_microvista23.html Yet, Windows Defender had problems because they used the word Windows even though it was combined with the word Defender. "There is some controversy over the name "Windows Defender" with allegations that Microsoft used misinformation, or possibly intimidation, to acquire the name from a company supplying software under the same name [1]. Microsoft claims that it is protecting the term "Windows" as their trademark." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Defender

  14. freedom on UNIX Security: Don't Believe the Truth? · · Score: 1

freedom is the main reason I prefer not to use Windows but the alternative is not linux, in fact linux is the opposite since the security stops the user (myself) from doing so many things I want to do on my own computer and there is no way to easily turn it off. windows is annoying enough with it's protected memory and file locking and linux makes it even more annoying. I know there is a market for a secure operating system, but there is also a market for an operating system that doesn't get in the way of the user. I totally hate logging on, in fact I refuse to use an operating system that forces me to logon, I also hate file-level security, and memory protection, which does nothing more than stop me deleting my own files and changing my own memory locations, patching the system and experimenting. security as far as I see is unnecessary on 'my own lan' and only between my lan and the outside world is a benefit and is protected sufficiently by my hardware firewall. security in an operating system is akin to having security on 'every' door within your house, and not just the outside doors.

  20. NO security! on Buy Vista or Else · · Score: 1

Last time I posted something like this I got an offtopic rating, the thing is, I do NOT want my OS to be secure in any way. This is not a quick unthoughtful comment, security makes it really hard for me to do what I want to do on my own computer. It makes it hard to debug programs, it makes it hard for me to change the behaviour of my system, to patch jumpblocks, to change memory locations etc... Security in my view should NOT be part of the OS (I don't want multi-user either which brings in tons of security issues). Security is best left out of the OS. For me, I would secure my Network only (ie: with a hardware firewall) - my house doors stop people from using my computer direct and if I want Internet software to be secure, I would use them in a sandbox where necessary. Security in the OS brings in all sorts of issues, the main one preventing me from *using my own computer*.

  21. security (or lack of) on Ancient Flaws May Leave Mac OS X Vulnerable · · Score: 0, Offtopic

It surprises me that such a big fuss is made. I agree that for someone who 'wants' security features and they don't work as expected there is a problem, but what about the other people who don't want security features even though they cannot be turned off in OSX or Windows XP for example? It makes me enjoy using OSs which don't have security features (such as MorphOS or AmigaOS) as these let me 'the user' do *EVERYTHING* I want to do on my own computer.
