    I apologise

The uni i work for works to what we call a "european model" (guess just internal bollcks then as opposed to a true european model) I must say i made some assumptions that most of the EC owrked relatively similar.

The point of foreign students in the UK remains with me processing fees upwards of £20,000 for 1 year courses i am able to see first hand the discrepancies between them and the english students being paid for by my taxes who do fuck all and expect to be carried.

Now im sure this can be argued with too, but thats the problem with anecdotal evidence.... we all have different anecdotes

I dont believe there is discrimination on the basis of region. Just like a home connectiopn, once an establishment pays its annual subscription to JANET they have full internet connectivity.

This is an annual payment based around the size of the organisation.

Furthermore (with reference to a previous post) a large part of uni fees in europe (Germnay too) are paid by foreign (mostly oriental) students.

I have solved the "crap articles" on slashdot problem.

Seeing as one mans meat is anothers poison, and whats good for peter isnt necessarily good for paul (enough cliches for now) i have developped a device called:

    "Self controlled screening technique"

Basically I look at the conveniently provided summary and using my own personal interest as a guage, I decide whther or not to click on it and read further.

Miracualously I have no problems with articles that I don't like polluting my vision.

I have also adapted this for other entertainment and news media such as the television.

Like Slashdot, this technique is free so I can use it how I like, meaning the /. crew can post what they like without us crossing paths.

If anyone wants more info on employing my methods in their own workplace you can get in touch with me at quit.whining@thepoweroftheobvious.com

Even on Educational terms we cannot supply at less that 700 a piece for macs. admittedly, the admin is novell based and that gives us a lot of control over the range of machines. but being in the line of work we are we do need to allow a certain amoount of autonomy to the users.

virus protection is essential no matter what your system and mcafee handles that.

mail is a bespoke oracle backend with custom front end or outlook.

and the SAN and access components are on some kinda *nix.

so the back end i guess is mostly away from windows, but my point remains that we cannot supply the desktops at a good price unless we use windows machines.

as for the software... most academic soft is currently windows based.. thus the choice is not ours

Because computers are THE toolbox in most lines of work. Schools have to prepare people for reality, and still many people do not have such access at home.

I work for a university and in an average week we get at least 3 students committed dissertations or reports to floppy and then can't understand that they lose it.... these guys should know this already, and they sure as hell aint read the notices we have everywhere to inform them of the value of using the shared drives.

basic IT familiarity should be a pre-requisite for all school leavers... even if only to know how to browse the web for jobs and write an attractive CV.
