So? these things have been happening since the US was conceived. We've managed to survive thus far. Not that we shouldn't worry, but all this crap about how the world is ending and such and we're a police state and bush is a dictator is all mostly bullshit. Yes you can draw parallels, but you can draw parallels between pretty much any 2 things, and we can still vote and still make a difference, so not all is lost.
wow a nice witty statement. gratz. let me say it in another way whether or not it's a true 'mem leak' or not, it's trivial. But feel free to debate meaningless semantics, and ignore your customers, I'm glad to be competing for a job with you.
The simple fact is that the US will almost always come off looking bad when you compare what US citizens know about a country and what the people in that country know about the US. Just about everybody knows about the US. But I would bet very few people in say the UK know much about the history of Japan. Or that many Japanese know much about the politics of Norway.
You know, I once read a post by a Canadian criticizing the US because none of us know much about Canada. Which is probably accurate, but i conducted an informal survey asking Canadians who the US president is, and who the Canadian Prime Minister is. I think the tally was, 8 out of 10 didn't know who their own prime minister was. They all knew who the US President was though.
Neither will happen. Microsoft has a monopoly. They are completely insulated from the consequences of their actions, know it, and act accordingly.
that's why you can buy dells with linux on them? that's why you can buy a mac? Sure it's not as easy, but a lot of people know they have a choice, but they are satisfied enough that they don't want to go down that route. Have they gotten away with crap? yeah, because they are the biggest player, but they can and will fall if they keep fucking up.
You know, there ARE limits to freedom and there should be (classic example of fire in a crowded theater). Now I don't know the context of that quote, but you've taken it out of context anyways (and I've never seen it in context). So all it is, is an emotional appeal that lacks any backing with logic.
I don't think it's an american taboo, we drink beer at work every friday (paid by my company even) and sometimes even scotch or liquor. I live near Seattle.
so how do you make.deb s then? i remember a couple years ago looking to make an RPM and finding very little information on how to do it. Granted I'd probably have a lot better luck now.
I think the single biggest threat to Slashdot is for us to try to be something we're not. We are NOT CNet. We are not Digg. We are not Wired. We are not Reddit.
In a nutshell, buy Intellij if you can afford it. I'm using Eclipse right now and having used Intellij in the past, I think it's all around just better, does things in a more logical way, from a user's perspective. A lot of the things IntelliJ does, eclipse does, but they're in a half assed way comparatively. I also, personally, had fewer problems with intellij and doing weird things, like eclipse sometimes shows blank files in CVS where they most definitely are not blank. And I don't have a copy of Intellij running, so I can't give you more details.
The simple point you're making: Hardware is for us to USE, not "NOT USE". Sure, we don't want our applications to be completely wasteful. But if software developers can focus more on useful features and code with less bugs, I'd rather they do that than save a few megs of RAM.
Which is why people should be using java instead of C++:)
btw here's the video Pudge Singing!
blame pudge!! he was on the republican debate lol
:P
i couldn't believe it when i saw it

get off your high horse about some technicality. And that's all that saying it's not really a memory leak, is doing.
if you define a mem leak as taking up more and more memory than it should (which i think is 100% fair), than it would still be a memory leak.
for those who don't get it http://www.roadsideamerica.com/pet/topsy.html
Ron Jeremy objected to being related to a Linux distro
But just about everyone can pick out the US and their country.
Except of course U.S. Americans.

Dodd, for starting to erase the black spot in my head over the name "Dodd"
his name always reminds me of this Dodd http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westley_Allan_Dodd not exactly the best association.

I agree, I was glad when I read this line
/. never becomes them either.

I hope
you're probably right, but I was carded for buying Diablo II, and I was 22 or so at the time.

Your use of the letters J, O, K, A, T, Z in your name, causes me to hate you :P

How many programs for Windows have existed almost unchanged for as long as Windows has existed.
solitaire?

for allowing non-technical people to make fundamental decisions about the appropriate use of technology.
I bet the military has said similar things about the commander in chief.
There's no reason a JVM couldn't implement those features.
