I really enjoyed the production work on the CD for the marriage amendment. It was first-rate stuff and as a Flash novice, made me a little bit envious. The copy that Tom Scheck gave me required an access code. Do all the CDs being mailed out come with an access code? If so, I'm curious as to why that is and wondering if the "votes" I'm asked to take during the presentation are reported back to the MN GOP? And, if so, are they matched to the access code and do you keep a record of what code is mailed to what person?
Mark was kind enough to respond promptly:
Thank you for the kind words regarding the high tech merits of the cd. Like any political survey done by the Party, it is our hope the cd will help us recruit more volunteers, provide valuable voter ID information and hopefully allow us to raise money so we can continue to send the cd out to more Minnesotans.
On Friday, the cd will be released to the public. The cd's packaging will make clear that the cd is interactive in nature.
A follow-up e-mail from me:
So by interactive in nature, do you mean the results are being reported back to the GOP and, if so, are they identified by the access code?
And a response:
Yes- very similar process to if you got a free AOL cd at the grocery store.
Actually I *DO* have ADHD. But the worst part is that my wife is a professional writer. I should be shot by the members of Slashdot and denied sex from my wife.
Of course... I'm already 50% of the way to that goal.
But in all seriousness, I copy and pasted that text from another site. Didn't even read it.;)
Is it possible that if JPEG patents were enforced we would actually persue the use a PNG (a significantly better format). As a web developer, if I could rely on people being able to see all the different derivations of PNG, life and design would be much easier.
Why should I be uncomfortable all day when I sit in an office and don't talk to, interact with, or look at anyone that is a client? I don't sleep in a suit. I don't lounge on saturday in a shirt and tie. What does wearing a tie have anything to do with writing code? I can understand if you are meeting with people, but to sit behind a screen all day requires little to no fashion.
Hell, I should be nude if I want to. It's not like my office has any windows.
Oracle can now charge for licenses of InnoDB. Since InnoDB is the default table type for MySQL 5.x it means any new versions that are released will, in theory, be a potential source of revenue for Oracle. This beats up the idea of MySQL as FOSS and will lead to one of two things fot the MySQL folks: The demise of MySQL or the re-engineering of the main MySQL trunk.
This may change soon, but as of right now, the installer states that you need Quicktime 7.0.3 to view videos. I tried software update and had no luck. I went to the Apple download and update site to see if it was available. It wasn't.
If they are going to release something this huge, shouldn't they have made 7.0.3 immediately available?
The core of the problem is that users continue to not understand what they are doing or using. People expect things to "just work" and if it breaks they will have it fixed. Many people treat their cars this way. They know how to drive them, but not how to fix them if they break down. If we can't educate the users in the safe and proper use of their machines, we will continue to have such problems. If the mainstream OS continues to be riddled with security holes that grandma doesn't know how to patch, we will continue to have these 100,000 node bot nets.
Education and training actually does better security and society as a whole.
Internet? So instead of setting someone up with encryption, you will put it on a floppy disk and Fed-Ex or drive or fly that disk to them? I was talking about LANs initially, but it sounds like you have bigger problems if you can't secure your data enough that you have to resort to Sneaker Net.
What are you moving via floppy that is under 1.4 megs? There are lots of options for moving tiny files. There was a recent innovation called a "network" with things like "Electronic Mail" and "FTP"
- The ability for multiple lighting zones. I prefer to work in the dark with nothing more than the glow of my monitor. My boss likes to have all the lights on and all the shades wide open. Plan for this.
- A library of good source materials and reference manuals. Having a 3-copy-O'Reilly-library would be much more cost effective than 15 people owning the same book.
- A place to sleep for an hour. If I had a place to sleep for an hour in the afternoon I would have the motivation to work until 8pm every night. Otherwise, I'm gone at 5 on the dot.
- A good calendaring system, office directory, and CRM system.
- Ergonomic keyboards and chairs.
- A bike rack in view of the front door/receptionist. Monitored areas are less likely to be burglarized.
- Allow everyone to put their own music on their machine and share it out via the iTunes sharing feature. This is what we use at work. This allows people to keep their own music, but check out the tastes of others without doing anything illegal (at least without intentionally doing so). Music is a key feature of my work.
- Make sure everyone has comfortable headphones for their music. No speakers.
- Any 'piped-in' music should be low enough to be background noise. It should never be allowed to be heard on the other end of telephone conversations.
You missed the best tracks then.
Spend more time with it.

Neither PNG *nor* JPEG have spell and grammar check. *sigh*

Their team leader was on the Red Team last year. I'm sure that didn't hurt them at all.
Their plans are surely similar. The guy heading up the Stanford team is a former student of Red Whittaker and was on the Red Team last year.

Anyone hear of Apple? They stopped the flop back in '98 or so.
