About patents: I hold two or three patents myself. I vividly remember when I wrote my first disclosure. It was brief, to the point; the idea was clearly and unambiguously described in two pages, that anyone with a basic background on the subject could understand without much of a problem. I then turned it over to patent lawyer. A couple of weeks later I got the text of the patent application from the lawyer. I could not understand it. I was the originator of the idea, and could not understand what the patent application was all about. Written in a vague, confusing language, the document was impenetrable to me. To the person who came up with the original idea. Maybe somebody more intelligent than me would have been able to study the text of the application and make use of my my idea - I certainly would not have been able to do so. That was the day that I lost all my faith in the patent system. Through management pressure, I have written a few other disclosures - but I have not reviewed the subsequent applications ever since. What for? I wouldn't be able to understand them, anyway.
They might need to have people working in the EU though, because the EU is very likely to regulate some AI use to protect its citizens. Stuff like AIs making decisions about people's lives, such as mortgage and job applications, is already under scrutiny.
That could also be a problem for the UK post-Brexit, because without regulatory alignment with the EU it will face the same problem as the US.
It will be business as usual - the UK government will draw red lines, will issue lofty patriotic communiqués, will claim that Britain rules the waves - and then will just pull its trousers down and will do as the EU tells it to do.
For how much longer now? With Allo, Google seems to be its inveterate tradition of dropping projects after a while. The truth is though that not many seem to be using it anyway.
What's wrong with the current one? How does the new one improve it? If I were malicious I would think that this is just another shenanigan from the GUI design team to stay relevant. If I were malicious.
It is not that there can't - it is that there isn't. It was long ago decided to count that way, probably because the concept of 0 was not yet well understood at the time.
Those of us old enough remember the Arthur Andersen debacle only too well. The modus operandi is always the same: the companies carrying out the audit, usually requested by the companies being audited, simply do like the proverbial $25 whore.
Google dropping the ball on a project. Who would have thunk. Google has shown to be pretty good at two things. First, at launching products that are supposed to be kind of flagship, only to abandon them completely after a while. Two, at making sure that their product naming is as confusing as possible. The Google culture, indeed.
Until then, we only have innuendo. I have no love for Amazon, but those are very serious charges that must be supported by solid evidence. Tall stories do not fit the bill. Present your supporting evidence.
If you use your Facebook account like a garbage can, to contain all the trash generated as a result of the privilege to log automatically with Facebook into some sites, the bad guys will only get garbage. That's what Facebook is good for. From my account, the bad guys will have obtained fake names, phone numbers, email addresses - and an untold and unknown - to me - amount of spam. Enjoy the junk, hackers.
Assembling an IKEA chair is, in most cases, trivial. You just have read the instructions, roll up your sleeves and get some physical work done. That's what many struggle with it. It is not that they have difficulties following the instructions to get the job done - rather, they just can't be bothered.
Ah, the bliss of being Microsoft-ignorant. Even better when one can make a very good living, while having fun - and remaining ensconced in such ignorance.
Start by ditching Gmail for an alternative like ProtonMail or StartMail, and ditching Google search for DuckDuckGo or StartPage.
DuckDuckGo will have to improve VERY significantly if it is to be reckoned with as a serious alternative to Google. I am sorry to say so, but it is the truth, as my experience moving to DuckDuckGo by default a few weeks ago unambiguously and painfully proved. With ProtonMail you are just substituting a Big Brother for another. I have no experience with StartPage and StartMail; I'll look into them.
While I have no vested interest in Gmail, using it sporadically and for nothing really all that important, I resent this penchant for GUI makeovers just for the sake of it. I am already familiar with the interface; I do not have the need or desire to become familiar with a new interface, which probably will allow me to do the same things, with pretty much the same level of ease or difficulty, only in a different way. I'd rather devote my time to learning other, more interesting and personally rewarding things. I am all for change and innovation, but with a purpose other than just change and innovation.
Start suppressing some freedom of speech, and take the first step toward totalitarianism. Racist language is hateful, but we'd better learn to put up with (and despicable things like that) if we want to live in a free society. Also, I am sick and tired of being told by self-appointed guardians of the moral virtuousness and purity what it is that I can't have access to. I am and adult, and, within the law, I will make those decisions for myself and on behalf of my children till they become adults themselves.
What about starting innovating by removing the unsightly notch? Anybody can come up with a phone with almost no bezel and a notch. Are you so unimaginative that the no bezel - no notch combination is beyond your capabilities?
I'm the product coz I had to watch all them damn superbowl ads whilst getting nothing in return.
What do you mean? One watches the SuperBowl for the ads. The game? The whole twenty minutes that you get in the three-hour broadcast? Hardly worth the while.

You should work for IDC, or Gartner. Maybe you do?
If they did that, it would be all too evident that they are useless. They have to at least pretend that they are doing something.
You know allo exists?

Had it been continuously, they would not have interrupted things by shutting down this project. So there, Intel.
Will it not wipe out the bankers? One can only hope.
Mandelbrot brought this up 40 years ago, using the coast of Britain as an example instead.
Your point is well taken. However, much as I despise MS (and I despise it cordially) I still think that Google outdoes them in this department.
High quality audio conversations over the traditional POTS? Are you serious?

The vast majority of us are not sufficiently important or interesting to be worthy of such an attack.
