  1. Re:Who pirates now adays? on The Pirate Bay is Here to Stay? · · Score: 1

I suspect a large (ok, maybe not that large) section of pirated downloads would disappear if they only distributed the same bloody content in a lawful, paid-for manner over the internet themselves!

Perhaps I'm only speaking for myself, but I hate having to wait 4 months for the latest hollywood blockbuster to open in the theaters here in Sweden, then wait another 4 months for it to appear on an (overpriced DVD), then waiting another 4 months for the price to drop to reasonable levels. If I could pay $20 to download the movie legally after a few days of its release, I would gladly do so!

Of course this doesn't justify piracy in any shape or form, but if the industry would only realize that half the downloading is about convenience, maybe we could get somewhere?

  2. Do NOT put identification tag on your flashdrives! on When Data Goes Missing Will You Even Know? · · Score: 1

From TFA: As a result of this experience, I have put a small .txt file on my devices with my name and address, and I figure an address label on the outside can't hurt either.

I know someone placed fairly high up in the security department of a major international company, and this is exactly what their employees have strict orders NOT to do. They even go so far as to recommend you don't have any visible identification tags on your luggage.

Tags mean you can be identified, and if you carry around a flashdrive clearly marked with your name and company in for example an airport, the odds that someone will spot you are quite high. If this someone has been hired from a rival firm, odds are this someone will try to steal it.

This may sound like too much James Bond, but the fact is that corporate espionage is bigger than ever, and it becomes more and more important to protect every ounce of information you might have.

Also, no identification tags means all your pr0n can't be traced back to you.

I agree completely with your analysis of how Tolkien invented first the world, and then the story.

Nowdays I get so annoyed that every fantasy author has to invent his own cultures, languages and other drivel when it is obivous they have no real knowledge of it. They just wrote a cool story and then had to fill about 600 extra pages with complete drivel and strange pronounciations. It's like most of them assume that since Tolkien did it, I have to as well otherwise it's not fantasy.

The bad news is he started charging people to play it :/ Fortunately, a few months later the free version surfaced and now I'm happily wasting lots of time juggling letters.
