So if someone starts to grow a new head would it be unethical to cut it off even if it got there against their will? What do the varied religious texts say about extra heads you've grown long after birth?
I think I'd be willing to conceed that the update process for Windows can be lenghty to say the least. The thing is, that is a transient cost as I have yet to need to wipe and re-install my Visa box for over a year and counting. I've been learning to use Ubuntu myself and I'm beginning to grow fond of it but it doesn't give me what I want in an OS for a home PC, namely support to play PC games with the video card of my choice. Anyone who is choosing an OS needs to first consider why they own a PC in the first place i.e. to work, to game, to compose e-mail etc. Past experience is worth something too. If a person honestly has a lot of crashes and issues with Windows, hates the installation process AND can do what they want on a different OS then by all means go for it, but I'd hate for someone to be misled into sacrificing any aspect of what they use a PC for based on someone elses usage needs. Don't get me wrong, I hope that Linux gets more publicity so that people know it's an option but it wont do the Linux community any good in the long run if people choose it based on ideology and come to find they can't do what they used to be able to.
Maybe I'm just clumsy but the job isn't truly over until you discover all the cuts on your hands that you didn't realize you made at the time. The ones that have that sort of quantum uncertainty to them in that they don't hurt until you see them for the first time.
Could it perhaps be printed on say, a cracker? That fellow that swallowed the USB flash drive to prevent investigators from using it for evidence might be interested.
I'm not sure how the law handles this but since the OP was refering to the philosophical or policy basis I would say that yes, she shouldn't have stood naked in front of a window that was visible to people standing in public areas. If Google Streetview captured something along this line I would expect that the conern would be more of a content one rather than a privacy violation though I'm sure it would also be grounds to charge the woman with indecent exposure. The situation should be different if they were using technology that let you see much more than you would ordinarily see with the naked eye. Regarding the DDoS, I think it would be absurd to charge someone with conducting a DDoS because they visited a Slashdot link to an already saturated website and periodically hit refresh to see if the site was back yet.
Not just that but also consider that the video card manufacturers will be judged by the quality of their product based on the end user experience and little else. If they refuse to let anyone else write drivers for their hardware then they can directly control the quality of said drivers. Additionally, they will test for different configurations on the set of operating systems for which they wrote drivers for. As soon as they open their spec, even if they claim that they only officially support Windows, people will still judge the quality of their product based on the word of a friend who couldn't get that darn card to work on their Linux box. So instead people write sub-par reverse engineered drivers that the manufacturers can sweep under the rug since most of the people using them will be tech-heads who better understand that they won't get ideal performance or stability. Even if you have little faith in humanity you have to at least trust that if the sales folks saw $$ in fostering 3rd party driver development that they'd dive on the opportunity.
If you are writing cheating software, better to hook in at the API layer like DirectX or OpenGL so that you don't have to write a version for every card. I doubt that cheating is a strong consideration regarding witholding the hardward docs.
Every time I've seen it happen it was a post where it was clear the author spoke without taking a moment to control a knee-jerk response. That said, perhaps this is a DB issue and it happens uniformly to all posts but if that is the case you would think it would happen to popular and constructure posts as often as it would knee-jerks and that you'd see more prominent cases of "Hey, where did that post go!!!". I only have a few data points to go on but I'm building up the suspicion that it is in some way related to the content of the post.
Maybe when things get modded negatively enough they just vanish but we already have collapsing threads for that. I'll let my post stand as a test to see if simply being off topic is enough to cause that to happen...
Why do posts like this dissapear? The Slashdot FAQ states that you can't delete a comment and neither will they delete one unless it contains malformed HTML. "We believe that discussions in Slashdot are like discussions in real life- you can't change what you say, you only can attempt to clarify by saying more."
For those wondering, the OP stated that this technology will destroy blind culture as he claims the cochlear implant destroyed deaf culture and that this should be considered cultural genocide. Quick question though, is it possible for people to delete their own posts (despite being forced to preview what they wrote) or does that just happen when you get modded down to oblivion?
It would be stupid to fail someone for completing a team assignement just because they couldn't get the other group members to participate. The key is making the effort to include them and letting the instructor know early on that there are difficulties. You can lead a horse to water but nobody should expect you to make him drink. You may still end up doing all the work yourself, and this does happen in real life, but you are expected to let your superiors know that someone or something is negatively impacting the project. The instructor will make the call on if they get credit or not, and you should still expect to be penalized if the project was not completed just as in the real world team-members may get fired and you may lose a sale / contract if you fail to delilver.
This project can not be considered complete unless it contains footage of Richard Stallman wearing a hard-drive platter as a halo, holding a conucopia and his GPL sheild. Bonus points if he is heard correcting someone on terminology during the video.
My first exposure to Dune was walking in as my father, having been flipping through channels, happened to be watching the Lynch version mid-way through. The surreal atmosphere is what really drew me in and the story was just icing on the cake. I tried reading the book and despite enjoying the first quarter it was no match for my disinterest of reading in general. For better or for worse, any work based in the Dune universe will have to prove itself against the Lynch movie in my mind, and that includes the original book itself. Since we are on the topic, does anyone have a recommendation for which DVD is the most content inclusive for the 1984 Lynch version?
I thought dogs just generally chased, attacked, and ate just about anything i.e. squirrels, rabbits, cars, postal employees, spherical objects, non-spherical objects, dirt, rocks... As for sharks, I'm under the impression that their perception of the world can be classified by "to be eaten" and "to be ignored" wheras dolphins are simply reacting to their presence on the former list. That said, I could be swayed if some sources were provided.
As long as it isn't the same as your body temperature you would still have a thermal gradient to work with. Your body would be cooling itself by sweating and the device would be harvesting the heat energy that is flowing into your head through the headband rather than the other way around. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermopile

Doesn't that just amount to a few beers head start on a trip to the tavern?

but will it set your mind in motion?
"according to a report in a Beijing-based newspaper" Ahh I see, or rather, nothing to see here. Easy enough to just wait to hear from Google.

Found some more info regarding this idea http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vactrain

Does that make it illegal to be the worlds tallest man? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Wadlow

Star Trek was a documentary and the events happened in real time!

Apparently awareness of fictional worlds makes people more depressed as well http://www.cnn.com/2010/SHOWBIZ/Movies/01/11/avatar.movie.blues/index.html Maybe the problem is awareness in general, ignorance is bliss right?
The vastly improved security measures that were already in place by 9/11 because of 9/11?
Then just bump it up to 7
