A friend of mine went into a Highland store and told the salesman that he wanted product X and was willing to pay Y for it. He also added the condition that if he even said one thing about an extended warranty that he would leave the store immediately. The salesman wrote it up and then brought it to his manager to approve the sale. The manager saw that the salesman did not check off the box that said that he told my friend about the extended service plan and started to tell my friend about it. My friend then proceeded immediately to exit the store. The salesman followed my friend trying to salvage the sale, but with no success.
I agree with the way that you are handling the case. The RIAA should not be able to go on a fishing expedition. They should have solid evidence before even sending out those annoying letters.
I do have one question about this case. Why is she paying for an internet access account if she has never used a computer? That does not make sense to me.
I think that you are still thinking US. I am traveling in Asia.
Let me go through your points.
There are customers who will not let an outside computer on their internal networks. There are some who do not grant access to the internet. I actually have full wireless access on the beach at home, but then I would not be working.
I do need the company's VPN client to get to the internal network. There is no other way. Once connected to the internal network, then I can do remote desktop. I have run into a few cases where the VPN client cannot access the network. It could be ports or it could be other problems. I can complain to the hotel, but there are quite often language issues.
Now you recommend two laptops. Do you even think about the weight? I travel for work. I do not telecommute. All additional weight is a pain to deal with. Additional memory sticks weigh a great deal less than another computer.
You presume that broadband connectivity that allows the ports for VPN are available. In my travels, I go to places where I cannot access the internet. Some places have the broadband speed, but block the ports for me to do VPN. At times, I am just not near any connectivity. Do not make assumptions like the person always has broadband connectivity unless they say that they do.
That is already in place on the most part. The Mall of America has had a curfew for the past ten years. I remember kids getting into fights on a Friday evening. Since the curfew, I have not seen a single fight.
It also ignores that fact that the greater majority of the world's population does not have a SSN. As an expat, I have become painfully aware of the fact that many people in the US seem to forget that there is an entire world out there that is not the US.
I definitely believe this is so. I recently moved from a suburban life in the US to Hong Kong. I no longer own a car and walk a great deal. I have been losing weight and have been much happier.
I had access to Control Data computers before age 10. I am a CDC brat. I also had access to Plato systems and was able to bring a Plato terminal to school.
I started doing this since my ISP's wholesaler was using transparent proxy caches that would actually strip ads from websites and then insert their own in their place.
I bet a nice lawsuit from Google would stop that practice.

I have a very different experience. I very rarely work more then 40 hours in a week. I get my work done.
The president of a past employer told me that he did not want people to work more than 40 hours in a week, except for the rare crunch times. He figured that if someone has to work more than 40 hours in a week, then management is failing at their job. He did not want people to be overworked, because productivity generally declines.
My manager in that same company told me, just before going on vacation, that there is never a good time to take vacation. There is always something that comes up. You just plan it in advance and inform people of when you are taking vacation. Remind them on a monthly basis of the vacation plans. During the month before, remind them weekly. When it comes time to go on the vacation, just go. It is part of your benefits package.

Alex,
I will take Bush bashing for 200.
btw: It is such an easy sport that I enjoy participating in it myself.

Will your solution address the no internet connectivity?
btw: I have access to the corporate though a particular VPN tool. Your solution will not work for me.

What is a company executive doing on this site?
I am waiting to see what baggies the fashion designers come up with, because the elite cannot have just an ordinary baggie.
Give us a URL to it and we will destroy it.
At my office, we prefer to go by the number of people who win the lottery instead of the number of people killed by a bus.
