I had the same problem. Very frustrating, so here's what I did. I bought the commercial version (Crossover office) and yeah, it cost me some money (very little), but now I have Photoshop 6.0 and Office XP running. pretty cool actually.

You could simply connect the mouse to your laptop, couldn't you? LOL!
Why yes I suppose so! But, here's the problem. The way my desk is setup, my laptop is on the edge, and in most cases, I just have it folded up and resting on a filing cabinet, or upstairs (as it has my wifi card in it). So having a mouse connected would mean it would be rendered (the mouse) useless or it would dragged around from upstairs to downstairs. It just wouldn't be pratical.
there, now you know more about my personal computing habits than you ever needed/wanted to know!
I've been using Photoshop since the 2.5 days (pre layers -- when real men [and women] used alpha channels) on Macs. I then switched over to using pshop on the PC because, well, I couldn't afford a mac!
But then, something strange happened. I had been using Linux (Redhat) as my OS-of-choice at home and would switch to my laptop (running 2k) to do Photoshop work. Out of the desire to use my mouse, I went and sunk a few bucks and bought the crossover application (commercial version of wine) and whalla! Photoshop 6 runs on my linux box, and faster!
So, now I can use Photoshop with my mouse (instead of that annoying touch-pad). The only thing that is a little annoying is that the focus of the tool bar and the other pallets take away from the canvas, so if you click on the marquee tool, you have to "double click" on the canvas to get the focus where you need it. Not a big deal, just a "thing."
I've been using this site for a lot of my searching for indy-music and what-not, and I guess recently they posted a poll about the possibility of setting up an MP3 service like mp3.com's for indy-bands and unsigned bands.
It'll be interesting to see if a non-commercial site could pull something like this off, at least if they stick to unsigned bands they can get around the whole RIAA crap.
The point is, that there are alternatives out there to mp3.com. Hell, a lot of the better independant labels out there actually provide full mp3's of their bands for free. I'm a big fan of Victory Records. You can download full songs by almost every band on their roster. Not too shabby.
Heh, when I get home tonight I'll make sure to download the latest tarball. The last time I downloaded Ardour was about 3 months ago (from cvs) and had a dandy of a time trying to satisfy all of the dependencies. Ugh, that was a lot of fun.
Now, with things becoming more stable, it really should be a no brainer:)
I like Ardour (when I actually managed to get it compiled) I have found that it will never replace my Mackie MDR 24, or my Mackie 8-bus console. I'm a knob/fader/pot turner and I like the feel of "real" equipment (I also like the way it looks, all shiney, with the lights and LED's sparkling).
I use Ardour mostly for low-level editing of tracks I record on the MDR. I can ftp into the MDR and pull the tracks out of project (they are just WAV files) and import them into Ardour. The best part about Ardour for editing is its non-destructive-ness... especially for the Mackie were if you had destructive editing... well your synch wouldn't be... um, in synch.
Now, maybe, with binary distributions coming online, we can see VST plugin capability?
Not to be a stickler here, but the Apollo 1 accident didn't really have anything to do with the fuel (alluded to in the "...renewable energy that doen't[sic] blow up...")
Apollo 1 was a result of pressurizing the capsule to simulate the pressure of being in orbit. That pressure environment, coupled with frayed wiring and the amount of velcro was the primary cause for The Fire.
Okay, I did RTFA, and well, as boring and tedious as benchmark tests result analysis is to me, I generally glossed right over it. What I found to be the most compelling part of this article was the "hate mail" section at the bottom. I read each one, and came away scratching my head.
I simply do not understand how people can be so consumed with obvious hatred for another person debating COMPUTERS! Why do Mac users feel so threatened? Why do Linux users feel so threatened? Why do Microsoft users feel so threatened?
I've been using Macs (since 92), Windows (since 93) and Linux (since 96) and FreeBSD (since 96) for years and well, I have yet to find anything about these systems that demand that I stand up and scream at the top of my lungs how wonderful any of them are, and to attack with such spiteful hate those who don't just fall in line.
Having started out in the computer world as a designer, I used Macs. I like them, they are cute, and fun and make many things easy. They are also slow, crash a lot and the cause of a lot of frustration. I started using Windows (3.0) because I wanted a PC, but couldn't afford a Mac at the time. Windows was cool, it crashed a lot, and I had the hardest time trying to configure hardware with it, but I got the job done. I was introduced to Linux looking for a way to get up to speed with Unix. I had a hell of time first installing it, it was cool, seemed very powerful (I was in over my head) and never crashed. Same with FreeBSD. But I still have yet to understand the mindset required to say things like: "This guy is an idiot, and his article should be pulled and his email box should be flamed."
or:
"I can't believe the haxial web site is still up, you would think by now someone would have hacked it."
Good grief, what is WRONG with people???
A while back I chose Linux as my primary OS for my day-to-day computing, on an Intel chip. I love it, its fun, its cute (thanks KDE) and it hardly crashes, and low and behold, I get my work done. My girlfriend (she's a designer) has a few Macs. I like them, but, well, it doesn't feel right to me so I stick with Linux. Sure, we get into our little OSX vs. Linux debates, but it never gets down to where she threatens my life and I launch DoS attacks on her machine. They usually end as "we should all just go back to Amiga" or something like that.
I would love to ask someone who is so delluded in their thinking to feel real hatred for someone who simply prefers not to use the computer/os/whatever that they use, what exactly do they have to fear? Why the need to act like a savage? Is it just because they are posting in a message board, and well, its time to be macho, because its safe and anonymous, and well, the need to act the tough-guy just overwelms better judgement?
Well, Plan 9 was the plan to use the dead, bring them back to life and then try to rule the world that way. Either that, or its just Tor Johnson sputtering out unintelligable lines and Vampira insisting on not speaking and a not-so-look-alike playing Bella making one of the finest films in recent memory.
Well, all I can say is, I hope they throw the book at this moron. Going 114mph in a 30??? Now, I am all for a little "spirited" driving, but only when completely safe (on an interstate with little traffic), and have engaged in it myself from time to time in my '02 p-car (986)... but having a car capable of traveling at 180mph doesn't mean one should "test" that capability.
I belong to the PCA (Porsche Club of America) -- and if there is one thing that is stressed, is safety and probably more importantly, awareness of one's car and its capabilities and technology. The PCA and its regional and local chapters, host driving schools, mostly for the goal of "tracking" your car (running on a race track) but the lessons one learns in these classes (which comprise of classroom time and "track" time) teach important lessons of breaking, shifting and handling, and *speed* control.
It just stupifies me when I hear about these lunatic freaks burning down the road at many multiples over the posted speed limit, then completely shocked when their intense stupidity kills someone, and they are held accountable. When I'm baited at stop lights by some dope in a pimped-out honda with an aircraft wing welded to the trunk, I just smile, wave and let the child peel out and "smoke me" so he can then post his "kill" story on some message board how he just "smoked" a porsche.
Moreover, you don't support your assertion that CORBA is alive and kicking. Why don't you search for "CORBA developer" and "J2EE developer" on any jobsite. or "CORBA Architect" and "J2EE Architect". That usually gives you an idea of how wanted a certain technology is in the marketplace.
First, full disclosure: I am a Java developer specializing in J2EE (Websphere) enterprise development.
Second, this is a "full of shit" statement. In the market that I am currently in, J2EE developers are in high demand (as high as any developer can be in this economy). I was hired just over a year ago, and got the top end of the salary spectrum, in a depressed economy, and have been working on projects with a large (fortune 1000) company exclusively in the Java enterprise space building and enhancing enterprise systems.
In fact, this company for whom I am working with now, is slowly transitioning their enterprise architecture over to J2EE because of its wide acceptance in the industry and the fact that, if left in the hands of professionals (like myself), the impossible is made possible.
Now, I find that most people who bash J2EE (and the other components that may make up a J2EE system) are usually completely ignorant of the technology and fear it because it is here to stay (my opinion only, but a well founded one as I look around and see the amount of projects in the pipeline).
Oh yeah Go here and see how there are no jobs for J2EE developers... today there were 670 posts.
One question I always have with regards to successful (meaning funded, wide acceptance, large user/developer community etc.) is how did you raise the awareness of your project to get it from just a side project to something that it is today?
Did you use traditional PR techinques, or just through a community of connections?
do we have to be reminded just how horrid the RIAA is to finally ditch "mainstream" music completely?
I see a lot of anger and hatred for this group, and yet many of the people here, I am sure, will still go out and buy some CD released on Sony (or one of its subs).
If you want to TRULY hurt the RIAA, and send a message that its behavior will not be accepted, simply do not buy major label releases. Hurt them buy spending your music money on the hundreds (thousands?) of hard working independant labels who simply publish music to make a few bucks (some make much more) and mostly (at least the best ones) to get music out there. Also, start supporting bands and artists directly, ignore those on the majors and throw your support behind those out there busting their ass to play to 35 people hauling their gear in beat-up van simply for their passion of practicing their craft.
Yeah, maybe I am a bit emotional and overly dramatic, but the point is, there are better ways to send messages to the RIAA, and wishing death and debating whether or not this is a free speech issue (which this isn't) is utterly useless, IMNSHO.
Wow, what an indepth analysis information week reported on. Some "business anaylst" type saying "oh yeah, look at the comments in the code, the are IDENTICAL"
A comment saying:

is NOT a basis for a lawsuit right??? IANAL... so who knows. If it is, I am in DEEP trouble.
I dunno, I can't wait till the day comes, in the future, when we can all sit around and say "hey remember the SCO days? Boy, wasn't that a trip?"
I firmly believe this to be a Good Thing. Indy labels, as I have said for a long time, are where real music is produced. But, man I just have a hard time seeing a label like Lookout! becoming part of this Apple deal. Don't get me wrong, I think it would be a good move... to me there's no such thing as selling out if some big company wants to help get your product out. Hell, I'd freak out if I came across an Isocracy MP3 (anyone know Samiam? Well, this is Samiam before they were called Samiam... its so much fun being an old punk -- conjuring up useless bits of information like this).
Now, if Apple would include labels like Victory Records, Revelation, and some of the other hardcore labels, then we'd be talking here!
Good god. I can't believe someone would be so weak minded as to feel raped by what a movie is or is not. Maybe you need to speak to an actual rape victim, share you story and see if you get a positive response. Oh wait, I'm sorry, you are just being clever.
How does he force you do do anything? "and forces everyone to buy..." I don't remember one of LucasFilm's security force, armed, walking into my house, escorting me to (insert your favorite DVD store here) and forcing me to buy anything.
See... the arguments with words like "rape" and "force" are absolutely STUPID! No one forces you to do anything, no one has "raped your childhood." If you feel that way, fine, but don't project those feelings anyone else.
Ah... fresh air. Reading this post was like taking a breathe of fresh air. Its amazing how quick one is to pin the "hypocrit" badge when the subject has had a change of heart, or gained some wisdom (as one would hope from reading the fragements of the story from this completely disgusting waste of genetic material Max Tucker). Of course I could be wrong.
To quote The Dude: "Well that's just like your opinion man."
In addition, to simply paint this woman with the "just another stupid girl" brush to me is just plain.... er, um stupid. We don't know her, what we have are fragements told by a total scum bag. Fine, looking at her website reveals an obvious absence of sophistication, but does that make one "stupid?"
Everytime I begin to think the geek culture is one comprised of smarter-than-average folks with open and eager minds, I am reminded (over and over again) that this is not the case, that like all other cultures and societies, this one is as close minded, tunnel-visioned and insecure as the rest. Too bad really.
Ugh... how did i start my last reply? Did you even read it? I started by saying this WHOLE TOPIC IS SUBJECTIVE!
What part of "subjective" do you not understand?????
It means, there is no right or wrong, just opinion!!!
Second, I could CARE LESS what someone *thinks* of Star Wars. My point is the PERSONAL attacks against George Lucas. I have no problem with anyone saying how much they hate the prequals, fine so be it. I disagree, I enjoyed them. But what I can't stand is when someone goes on and on how their childhood has been "raped" and then slings personal insults against someone. That is completely intellecutally retarded, plain and simple.
You state your opinion as if it was fact, when this whole topic is subjective. To say something so BLATANTLY STUPID as to say: "felt their childhood memories being raped by shoddy prequels" is quite possibly the most patently ridiculous thing ever uttered with respect to movie criticism. How does a movie maker do this? No, I'm affraid only YOU (the individual) could "let" this happen. Feeling "raped?"
As for me being "nothing to him but an aggregate in his earnings spreadsheet," what exactly is your point? I'm not looking for validation from anyone or anything.
First off, anyone who pays attention (and I do NOT expect that here on/.) knows that I am NOT a "fanboy" as I was around when EP IV was released (the first time).
But I must say, whenever there is a story on/. about SW, all of the George Lucas haters just crawl out of the woodwork to expose the depths of their naked jelousy and dreadful envy in the most disgusting and pathetic manner: by hauling personal attacks on George Lucas.
Its truly pathetic. You are truly pathetic. George Lucas, in my estimation, is a genious. He has managed to pull bits and pieces of mythology and form it into a cohesive and compelling universe that has enchanted millions for nearly 30 years! Lets see any of you do that, you little twerps.
I loved EP I, can't get enough of EP II (I probably watch the DVD once or twice a month, including the bonus footage, I can't get enough of Ben Burt's documentary) and I am eagerly waiting for EP III, and I will, with a big huge smile on my face, happily pay for the new SW site. Why many of you cry? Because there is real value for me, because I can see the joy, creativity and genious behind this franchise, instead of just being consumed by jelousy and envy.
If you *hate* George Lucas so much, why do you spend so much time expressing that hatred? I was tempted to just let this topic go, follow my own advice and ignore the comments in this topic, but when I see some people calling GL names and conducting personal attacks... it sickened me. You people make me sick.
I understand *legitimate* criticism of work, especially in creative works, and I have some of my own regarding Star Wars, but what I have been reading here reads more like hate and not thoughtful criticism.
I had the same problem. Very frustrating, so here's what I did. I bought the commercial version (Crossover office) and yeah, it cost me some money (very little), but now I have Photoshop 6.0 and Office XP running. pretty cool actually.
Okay, thought this might be a good place to post that the darlmcbridesucks.com site is up. Just a phpBB message board, nothing too fancy, as putting in more than 15 minutes of time in this would be really pathetic.
:)
Everone thank sheddd for the idea.
Thanks sheddd
I'll give you free space and bandwidth in one of my servers to host it
:)
Heh, thanks for the offer. I do have a dedicated server and 450gig/month bandwidth, I do think it might be a good idea to keep this option open in case SCO gets wind of it.
I find this a remote possibility.
We'll see
Again, thanks for the offer. If you could, drop me a line: minusone at yahoo dot com
I got darlmcbridesucks.com :)
:)
I'll have a forum set up on it later tonight or tomorrow.
I got it for a year, hopefully in a year's time this will all be ancient history

Heh, something interesting, on page 5 of that PDF, they list FreeBSD as a linux distribution.
Does that mean we need to mod this PDF as -1 Troll?
I had no problem
:)
Heh, when I get home tonight I'll make sure to download the latest tarball. The last time I downloaded Ardour was about 3 months ago (from cvs) and had a dandy of a time trying to satisfy all of the dependencies. Ugh, that was a lot of fun.
Now, with things becoming more stable, it really should be a no brainer
But your point is valid, IMHO.

Ugh... how did i start my last reply?
First off, anyone who pays attention (and I do NOT expect that here on /.) knows that I am NOT a "fanboy" as I was around when EP IV was released (the first time).
/. about SW, all of the George Lucas haters just crawl out of the woodwork to expose the depths of their naked jelousy and dreadful envy in the most disgusting and pathetic manner: by hauling personal attacks on George Lucas.
But I must say, whenever there is a story on
Its truly pathetic.
