The exception is when they have nothing in the way of new software or architecture announcements. (The Powerbook G3-500 release is the only example I can remember of a major product announcement at WWDC; and the other announcements at that WWDC were highly underwhelming.)
I believe the iMac was announced at the WWDC in 98
I agree with your first and second reasons, but I don't think having a permanent "file" of every one on one conversation you have with somebody is a good idea. Especially considering how many people use the AOL network. This is the network most people use to talk to friends/family and even co-workers. And don't forget about all the high school shit--a lot of these same people that would use AOL/AIM are from the click happy bunch that install kaaza or anything else that will get them "free" music aka same people who will share their whole HDD. Next thing you know your girlfriend is downloading conversations you are having with her best friend real time on kaaza.:-(
3) I rarely use AIM logs to quote people's mistakes, and am not paranoid about others quoting mine. I know my friends are logging me -- and I don't say things that I want off the record via IM.
Well like I said I don't know about you but I have somewhat personal conversations on AIM. Chat at your own risk!
You don't think farmers in Iowa need cell phones? They do. With email and all that. They need voice plus data. I guess technically those people don't need the internet either, right? I used to sell mobile phones, and I also live in IA. I can say without a doubt there is a need for reliable voice / data on the cornfields as well as in the city. Just because there is'nt a lot of people does'nt mean there is'nt a lot going on.
Why don't you just scan the negatives? (that is if you still have them) It would be more economical than spending the next 2 years chopping up 8"x10"x150dpi.
Just a thought.

The reason that I am really excited for this kit is because it puts some decent developer tools in peoples hands for a reasonable price. At the software retailer I work for, there are a lot of customers that are interested in game development and don't know how to get started. I imagine a lot of people are going to say that you can get a grey box that will do close to the same thing for less money, but the PS2 has a HUGE installed base as it is, and are a very trusted name.
I just hope we get this in so I can get an employee discount
I used to be a hardcore Mac user (and still am) but I have to say, after playing around with the Public Beta, I am amazed, to say the least. Aqua is cool, and Classic runs okay... carbonized apps are cool, but what I love is the USIX aspects of OSX. It is'nt that hard to grasp, and once you do, it transforms the MacOS into some sort of superOS. I love being able to maintain my webserver (APACHE not WebSTAR) through a telnet client. And OSX is so damn stable, it's like a dream come true. BSD is the shit, and I think OSX is what sold me (and will a lot of other people) on UNIX as a consumer OS.
not to sound like a complete cynic-- I don't want to sound like an ass, im just curious--- but why is this newsworthy? Why the hell would it even matter to be able to achieve something like that? Could somebody please fill me in? Thank you.
What a lot of people don't realize is how behind techonology wise a lot of rural communitys are. I used to live in Iowa, and there are parts where there is NO chance of Internet access. Even the bigger cities can't get anything abouve 56k. I think this is a wonderful step in the right direction, but I wonder how many other regions in the United States don't have access to a high-speed connection?
.... the Mac geeks? Multiple displays in Mac OS is awesome, especially with 2 21" trinitrons like I have. When in the graphic design industry, it helps--- a lot. But Mac users like me love to play games (especially UT), and with multiple displays intergrated into the OS like it is... is there any way to use more than one monitor on a Macintosh?
..usually improve the overall quality of that whole "scene." I know the fact that I was able to use Adobe PhotoDeluxe helped me out in the long run in using Photoshop-- and gave me an edge at school. I think this will help kids get into the 3D rendering "scene" and give them an edge for when they go to college, which in turn will make the end product a lot nicer.
I am a huge Mac advocate, but I am starting to get scared of buying a portable. It was hard enough to buy a Blue and White G3, just for a couple of months later the G4 towers, new iMacs that were the same speed as my tower, and now the G4 Cube and MP G4's. But I am a college Web Design student-- and I need some sort of portable solution. My school has'nt bought anything, simply because the current Powerbooks are too expensive, and "on the way out" for how much technology I would be getting-- iBooks are cool looking enough, but the lack of expandability is what is percluding me from getting one. So now I get this news of G4 PB's and I am wondering-- is this when I get in? Or will there be a revamped iBook line soon to follow? As you can see I am very confused, and I'd like some advice towards this issue.
there is Yellow Dog Linux here. and my fave, Linux PPC, which can be downloaded here. personally, I have Mandrake 6.1 installed on Virtual PC-- I find that easier to manage-- but whatever works.
to me-- from someone who has worked at a Babbages for a while-- how many kids even play games anymore? Most kids I talk to just buy games (like Diablo 2, etc) and get the best video card on the market at the second-- and play until one of their friends gets something better. The same stance is taken by the grade-school kids with Pokemon cards. Now I know that adults play games too-- but the whole idea of being able to "see through walls" seems pretty juvenile to me. Are games about fun or popularity of having the coolest shit (to the kids)?
Don't get me wrong... I love my Mac to death... it's the best computer I have ever owned, but what I want to know is why is it that Apple product rumors are always being hyped up on Slashdot? I mean, when Compaq has their new "box design" or whatever, it does'nt ever make Slashdot news... why is that?
no complaints, just kinda looking for an explination.
... but if you look at Lara Crofts "Vital Statistics" it says she is a 32 DD....and if you look at her pics.... well....thats a lie...unless thats like 32 pixels.... oh well, just thought id share...
this is insanity.... 2 competing systems, but one can play the others games
when i was a kid... it would of been the most insane thing to have, for example, the SNES play Genesis games.... but now.... that is happening. This seems all too strange to me.... am I alone on this thought?
... but how hard would it be to get the connection hooked up to a PC and download the games, and somehow play em on the dc off a burned cd? (I know that sounds so tech-stupid) But, could that happen? Pirated PSX games is a big reason people buy the system ( trust me, I used to work at Babbages--questions like that fly by 2-3 times a day)...and I think that might be a possible selling point for some people
...what kind of filtering process to game ideas have to go through to get "okey'd"?... cause if you have ever owned any video game system, you know that there are some shitty games... i mean, what makes it ok for "Irritating Stick" to be released, but not "Workplace Politics at the Watercooler"...?
... being a high school student in one of the biggest high schools in my state... I am in the middle of the "geek" populus at my school. How I see it, is in my programming class, almost everyone has their chips overclocked: it's like if you don't, then "why are you in an AP programming class?." This set of "geeks" are the same guys who are big "warez kiddies" (for lack of a better name) and tell me "oh....you have a Mac...sorry. Yeah, Half-Life is awesome...Mac's suck...." etc... bascially, they are real assholes that are full of themselves just because they have overclocked chips. They (all males) talk about their clock speeds at least twice a day "Yeah... Celron 300 clocked up to 550" and so on... it's like their penis length or something. These kids know how to run an FTP client, use Napster, and maybe frequent IRC. That's all. Oh, and they are geniuses, cause they are in a High School AP class (yeah right)
now, myself and a couple of friends are not as inclined to do such a thing. Why? Well... I am happy with the speed of my processor. I do a lot of intense graphic work, and I dont thing I would really gain that much from upgrading my chip (fyi, G3 400). The other two of my friends are into a lot of web development and theme making Linux themes, and programming type-things...and they really have no need either.
I am not really trying to prove anyone wrong, but you cant really say that it is a sub/counter culture. My high school is full of these people. People on the football team. I cannot consider that sub/counter culture. I think classifications like this are a little too vague.. but trends will be trends I guess, even if that is overclocking...
They are in direct competition with Corels suite of graphic/illustration products. I know currently Photoshop filters are compatible with PhotoPaint....but now that Corel owns Meta Creations.... is this going to change?
...but I don't really see the Tomb Raider movie as being a big hit. Video game movies (Mario Bros, Double Dragon, etc...) never have done good. Ever. That was back when Super Mario Brothers was a household name.... and now... a Tomb Raider movie. Intrest in video game "icons" has dropped a lot since I was a kid... and I can't see anybody really loving this movie.. I mean, the only people that like the game are people that think Lara is hot and wanna have sex w/ her, or like how the game plays, the puzzles, and the overall feel of the game. Well, if you are in it it for the second one...sorry. But if you do like glorified breasts and the such... Tomb Raider sounds like a good choice.
