  1. But why the deception? on Lawsuit Claims Apple Forced Users To iOS 7 By Breaking FaceTime (appleinsider.com) · · Score: 2

What I don't understand is why Apple even bothered with the deception. All they had to do is say that as a result of previous patent lawsuits, Facetime on ios 6 would be disabled as of yadda yadda date, and anyone who wanted to continue using the technology could move to IOS7.

Then this whole mess wouldn't have even happened, no?

  2. However, If you had actually done any research, you would know that USB-C is 100% compatible with USB 1.0 to 3.0,

And if you weren't a pompous gaslighting windbag, you would know that I DID do my research. I know *exactly* how many ports the macbooks come with. I know the available combinations of storage and ram available across the different models. I know exactly how Apple is artificially restricting options on the lower tier devices to force you to buy the higher ones because I spec'ed it all out. And I know perfectly well what is available as far as dongles go. And I am ESPECIALLY aware of just how breathtakingly complex and all emcompassing the USB-C standard is, thank you very much.

My point is simple: IT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH, and I expect a HELL of a lot better out of Apple.

Today, right now, there are ZERO TB3 docking stations or port replicators available. From ANYONE. Apple themselves sells exactly ONE TB3 HDMI converter, and it doesn't even fucking work! And you consider this a reasonable situation? And your solution is to buy dongles and dongles and more dongles, and daisy chain them into some tentacled monstrosity? Great! So now we're adding even more parts to the system, and more points of failure. Do you even USE computers or do you just masterbate to their spec sheets?

Furthermore, I thought you cared about how AMAZING Thunderbolt 3 performance is? Well guess what einstein, if you use one of those USB-C port replicators you linked, you LOSE that. You drop from 40Gbps down to 10. But that's ok as long as you win the argument, right?

And BTW, Apple has artificially restricted the number of displays you can drive per port, to one. So even if you have an appropriate port replicator with multiple video outputs, they all will display only one video stream. What's your excuse for THAT little gem?

It boggles my mind that you are utterly unable to accept ANY criticism of Apple, like they are some kind of God and you are their koolaid drinking raving prophet.

News flash: You're not an evangelist. You're not smart. You're just annoying tool who can't deal with reality.

  4. I did a whole bunch of research prior to upgrading my computer at work, and it's clear that Apple has *really* botched their latest Macbooks. We're already, what? 5 months post release and the number of available USB-C devices are laughably small. Which I guess makes sense, since they are too damn cheap to provide a sufficient number of USB-C ports on the machines themselves. If you're going to produce a laptop that is essentially useless without an entire drawer-full of external adapters, then you need to have a full lineup of those friggin adapters, hubs, docking stations, etc.

If that wasn't bad enough, the stuff that does exist are garbage. For example, look at the reviews for the HDMI USB-C connector. 1/5. The thing loses connection if you so much as look at it wrong.

And now this nonsense with a $1300 monitor that was explicitly recommended by Apple.

This is flat out unacceptable. Period. The whole point of paying the Apple premium is that you have assurance that everything Just Works(tm). Apparently Apple doesn't care about that anymore.

So my final decision was to buy a refurb of last years model. I get to reuse the existing hoard of adapters I already have, and it still has a normal USB port, magsafe power, HDMI and an SD card slot.

  5. I'd love to see ANY education system in ANY country produce a machine learning expert, even with a 4 year program, let alone 18 months.

*Nobody* does this. Why? Cause it's not fucking possible. There have been so many incredible advances just in the past few years, that there is no way in hell you can train someone up from scratch, drop them in front of a workstation and have them start coding.

Combine that with, for example India, where their education system does it's absolute damndest to stifle anything resembling original thinking (which is kind of required in a field as dynamic as AI) or even basic critical thinking skills (which is obvious to anyone who has ever had to deal with outsourced developers), it becomes blindingly obvious that this is just more of the same horse shit companies have been spewing for years.

They don't want foreign people for their brains. They want them cause they're cheap. People complain about fake news? It's been around a whole lot longer than then token phrase that just magically appeared a year or two ago, and this is a perfect example of it. Bald-faced lies being parroted about in order to alter government policy for the benefit of big corporations, and to the detriment of the actual techies who have an increasingly more difficult time getting paid what they're worth.

  8. Depends on the issue. In my case, transitions in Impress are fundamentally and shockingly broken, and it's been like this for years with no change in site. I haven't tried the Windows version, but both in Linux and Mac the OpenGL transitions just plain don't work, which makes presentations look like all you did was dust off something you made in the early 90s.

It's shockingly unprofessional, and quite frankly, embarrassing. If they wanted to be taken seriously as a competitor to Microsoft Office, they *need* to get these basic features working.

  9. Every time they come out with a new version, I always download it and the first thing I try is a very basic presentation in Impress. It *still* can't do OpenGL transitions properly. They just don't do anything. I mean, FFS, it's been YEARS now and they still can't get that working? Maybe they need to stop working about nonsense like ribbons and make the most basic, fundamental functionality work.

Oh well. Looks like I'll just have to continue using Powerpoint and Keynote.

Sleeping isn't the issue. The fact that I have to put it on a charging stand every night or it's dead, is the dealbreaker. If I'm going to get a several hundred dollar watch, I expect it to go at *least* a week between charges. A normal watch can go *years* without a battery change. The Pebble watch can go almost 2 weeks between charges.

Even the series 2 only maxes out at 2 days, and that's only if you barely use it. IMO that's just not good enough.

  12. So they just *had* to emulate one of the most despised UI changes Microsoft ever came out with, and gave it a stupid name to boot.

Cue everybody making "Muffin Top" jokes.

  13. Just wanted to confirm that I've noticed the same thing. I have an i7 Mac Mini, and while OSX has been overall ok, I noticed that after upgrading to 10.12 my performance basically fell through the floor. The machine is almost useless now. I'm due for an upgrade anyway so I have a new machine coming in, so it'll be a moot point, but it's bloody annoying.

I'm guessing that they've eliminated a lot of the caching systems that they used to have, because things as simple as bringing up a list of applications from the Open With... finder context menu takes excruciatingly long.

Also, upgrading to an SSD would be a fantastic idea.... IF YOU COULD. *grump* The original Mac Minis were user serviceable. Not anymore. The last one we tried to upgrade ourselves ended up being a freaking nightmare, cause you literally cannot replace the hard drive without doing a full iFixIt teardown of the entire unit. In the process we somehow managed to break off one of the connectors from the logic board so now the unit won't even boot and we need to get it repaired.

If anyone does want to upgrade their Mac Mini with an SSD, take my advice and just take it to a AASP to do it for you. Unless you have a lot of free time and the hand stability of a surgeon, it just isn't worth trying to do it yourself.

  14. That is true, and that is why absolutely no one has ever said, ever, that a single drive will guaranteed last that long. That's like complaining about climate change because your local forecast was off.

However, the metric does give a good indication of *general* reliability. Namely, HGST kicks ass, Toshiba has really upped their game, and Seagate is still as much of a wankjob as it has been for the past decade or so.

I wish they'd put more effort into reliability and less into raw capacity. I have personally sworn completely off of Seagate because I have had horrible experiences with the last several that I purchased. The final straw was when I RMA'ed one of their hybrid drives. Not once, not twice, but FOUR times. All within 6 months. I didn't even bother RMAing the last one. I gave up and bought from a different manufacturer instead, and so far it's still running great.

That's where the majority of these quack subluxation antivax idiots come from. How it's even legal to call it medicine, I have no idea.

But then a few medical practitioners found a few genuine gems in the above Chiropractic world, cause I guess even a broken clock is right twice a day. So began the second "official" branch of Chiropractic medicine that also includes a lot of related treatments like massage, etc.

The problem is that without education, a layman won't know how to differentiate between the two, and ultimately the latter branch gives legitimacy to the former branch, and in the end just makes yet another big mess of confusion. I don't know how practitioners are vetted, but it's inadequate to weed out the fraudsters.

I am a father of 8, and I have plenty of anecdotal evidence that Hyland's teething tablets are effective, and I want to continue to use them for my baby. From what I have read, the effective ingredient in them is probably the belladonna rather than the homeopathic ingredients, but I am not aware of any alternatives, and as near as I can tell the FDA refuses to actually release their data, which doesn't sound much like science to me

The fact that you are even using products like this, and arn't "aware of any alternatives", make it very clear that you closed the door on science a very long time ago. I wouldn't be surprised if you said you took your kid to a witchdoctor, or a priest to bless the demons away. There's literally no difference between that and homeopathy. (Hint: There's only one homeopathic ingredient: magic water)

There are plenty of legitimate, PROVEN, regulated products out there that help with teething, among other baby needs. And no, I'm not going to google them for you because I'd just be wasting my time. You would have found them yourself a long time ago if you weren't so busy drinking the koolaid.

I don't expect to change your mind. Mostly I'm just venting because articles like this makes my blood boil. Not just the fact that these kinds of problems exist, but the fact that they occur with such frustrating regularity. People are getting themselves and their kids maimed and murdered because they think they know better than literally hundreds of years of painstakingly collected scientific achievement and knowledge.

These people are just so god damn willfully stupid that there's absolutely nothing that can be done short of putting them in an asylum. But since we won't... let them make their choices and suffering the consequences.

The FDA is "obviously" being paid under the table by Big Pharma(tm) to keep homeopathy down because homeopathy is such a clear threat to Big Pharma profits. So basically they're damned regardless of what they do. If they try to regulate homeopathy, that would effectively give homeopathy unwarranted legitimacy. If you try to shut it down, 10s of thousands of brazenly stupid idiots will start shouting and flailing pitchforks about with the usual battlecries of... well... the kinds of stuff already mentioned in the article/summary.

I don't think this should even fall under FDA juristiction anyway. It should be treated like the criminal matter that it is. The gov't should charge these parents with child endangerment and manslaughter for knowingly giving their kids poison, because that is exactly what they did.
