Actually, all you who disagree with me are welcome to think what you want, but my comment was specifically targeting the comment I quoted in TFA. Of course the files are smaller and less bandwidth will be consumed and I'm not disputing that. I'm just saying that the claims of amazing speed improvements due to this are bunk because there are much bigger factors now than there were 10 years ago when people connected with 56K modems.
Most of the time when I'm waiting for a page to load, its because the site has some dependency on another site that is overloaded or whatever.
Most of the formats in general use are over a decade old, and the company says that they're consistently responsible for most of the latency users experience
BULL SHIT! Images are nothing anymore. Its poor javascript coding, flash ads and all the dependent site components that are responsible for most of the experienced latency now. Images don't mean squat unless you're still on a 28.8 modem.
Also, one way you can make jpeg images smaller is to set the quality value to 75 or 80, most people won't notice the difference and the size of your image will reduce dramatically. The problem today is that people leave their images at full quality right off their camera and upload a 2MB image file when it really only needs to be 138KB. WebP won't fix that user mistake.
The connectors shown in the article look very similar to multilane connectors that you see used on raid controllers like a 3ware raid controller. Is it the same?
go pick the worst star trek and make a game of it yippy
Actually, at first I didn't like DS9 either. That was in '93. Lately I've gone back and watched the whole series and found that I really liked it, perhaps even as much as TNG or Voyager. DS9 really explores that whole personal side of ST well and exploits the "Its the 24th century and we're still having the same old problems" factor.
Sounds like someone has been watching "How To Beat The High Co$t Of Living". Anyone remember that movie? Similar plot, only it was a big bubble holding $1 million in cash in the middle of a shopping mall.
As much as I dislike religion. I've come to accept that probably for a long time to come, we are going to be stuck with it.
Where is your entrepreneurial spirit? Don't just accept it, embrace it and start your own religion! You don't need to be a Pope, a Rupert Murdoch, or Ron Hubbard to have the unwashed masses following you. Remember, prey on people's fears and the best recruits are the most vulnerable ones (widows, alcoholics, etc). Not only is it a good money spinner but you get laid more too.
Phillip.
Your statement wouldn't be so funny if it weren't true.
As much as I dislike religion. I've come to accept that probably for a long time to come, we are going to be stuck with it. Because no matter how much we discover and can explain of the universe, no matter how many other worlds and civilizations we discover. There will always be something that can be explained at the time, and people will fear and respect it and even worship it. Probably every generation has had its share of people that thought that they were going to see the downfall of religion in their time.
Well in fairness haven't linux users been waiting longer? Seems to me Microsoft haven't exactly been forging ahead when it comes to 64bit.
Yes exactly. I've been trying to use 64-bit Linux as my desktop for 5 years now. At first I went ahead and did the 64-bit thing and worked with the 32-bit chroot'ed firefox/nspluginwrapper what the hell ever. In the end I just had enough with it being a crappy work around and had to use 32-bit Linux on my desktop. I'm glad they are finally giving it attention again before not having 64-bit linux becomes too limiting.
All the meanwhile, I haven't heard Windows users gripe and complain much that flash doesn't work for them very well. Most don't even know what 64-bit even is.
Let's just pray Slashdot never instates a "post as you type" feature.
Have you ever used talk (old command line program)? Could you imagine if the comments section was some kind of massive talk system. I wouldn't be surprised if someone is reading this thread right now who will go off and try to make it happen. I guess Wave was kinda like that.
Our key technical insight was that people type slowly, but read quickly, typically taking 300 milliseconds between keystrokes
I think what they meant to say there is that there was a group at Google that had nothing better to do than make this happen.
All that instant searching thing can be helpful at times, but it can also be wasteful of bandwidth, CPU resources, etc. The only place were I've found it essential is on youtube search on my bluray player where I don't have a keyboard to type letters, it can savea A LOT of time. Of course, I normally type 80 words a minute.
Also:
But that's ok, we know what will happen when two galaxies collide.
Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. However there is such a thing as tact.
Now you have a good idea. That would be cool and helpful.

If these are your idea of very high-end SAS cables/connectors, then you haven't met my friend Mr. $1million SAN.
Nevermind. Here is a con on the last page of the article: "HSDL cabling may be confused with mini-SAS cabling unless clearly marked."
Specifically, I'm talking about the SFF-8087 with iPass connector as shown here.

Not unless I take off this ring and these gauntlets.
I think it was only illegal until the 70s or so, then the market was flooded with people who had been secret hoarding gold from earlier.
By the way, if you'd be willing to sell me your gold for $300 an ounce, then I'd be willing to buy it from you. In large quantities. Seriously.
I have a magical bag of holding that you can put them in. Its call my pocket.
Nothing really to see here. move along.

Yeah, negotiating right of way with the railroad company. Brilliant! Why didn't I think of that?
Also sounds slightly like diarrhea mixed with spore
Well you just described Facebook so I guess the name is appropriate.
