  1. Re:He seems to miss.. on ISP Responsibility in Fight Against Spam · · Score: 1

Ok, I'll let you read what the parent poster said:

"By default we filter port 25 to only allow outbound email through our mail servers."

This means that outgoing port 25 connections are still allowed. All a hacked computer needs to do is be connected to on another port (besides 25) and then send the mail through the DSL providers mail server. This is in effect what is happening.

You probably thought he meant the other way around, but any ISP that blocked outgoing port 25 certainly would be extreme, but somewhat understandable considering the state of the internet these days.

She had gone through our entire signup form and given her credit card information without even realizing that she wasn't on shell.com or something related to Shell Oil Company.

  16. Has anyone seen alternate character domains? on Phishing In The Channel · · Score: 5, Insightful

I have been wondering when I would start to see these alternate character set domain names that you can get now play a role in this. You know, like someone registers cnn.com, but the c is not the latin character set c but one from another character set. Or something that almost looks like a c.

Then, without even hacking DNS, you can simply make someone or a group of people think that they are on cnn.com when they are really not. This could be used for things like fake news reports, etc. that make people panic.

Has anyone seen anything like this yet?

  17. Re:Fantastic idea, but enforce it from the start on Independent Developer Projects in the Workplace? · · Score: 1

Not necessarily. Unless they have something in their employment contract about side projects being under subject to ownership by the employer.

Of course, I'm of the opinion that if you're giving people time to work on side projects 20% of the time and then saying that anything they do outside of work is also owned by them (like Exxon or HP), then you are just being a jackass.

What I was getting at in my first post was that this person needs to enforce the time spent on other projects (only 20%) and make sure that they are not just using the time to surf the web or post to slashdot (like I am). Otherwise if left unchecked, it will get away from you and eventually people will be spending 80% of their time on other projects and hating you when you expect them to do the employers work.

An alternative would be to have a dedicated position called "open source developer" that would give the person in that position the opportunity to work full time on a project for 6 months or so. This would be some position that you would get promoted to after working at the company for a while. Then it would help other employees get motivated so that they could be the next person to take up that position.

  18. Fantastic idea, but enforce it from the start on Independent Developer Projects in the Workplace? · · Score: 4, Interesting

That is a great idea and I think you will get a lot of brownie points from your employees that care about such things. But make sure you enforce what they can work on. Some people might use it as an oppurtunity to start another business that competes with your own, which might not be what you had in mind.

I think that if a lot of businesses had this kind of open mind it would surely help open source software.
