How would a national sales tax be more "fair?" It's a well known fact that sales taxes are highly regressive taxes, placing the largest tax burden on the poorest people because low income people spend the vast majority of their income while those with much higher incomes save their money.
I have a couple teachers and even a former administrator from the hs that I went to as a friend on facebook, and I added all of them before I graduated. Nothing bad ever came from it. People need to keep in mind that facebook is far more public than a public street. Teachers and students have been having liasons before facebook, and I doubt facebook makes it any easier.
I was working on a gas/billiard ball simulation a couple years ago and kept on running into a bug where the simulation would lock up in an infinite loop, and iirc, that magic number kept popping up. All along I thought it was some sort of bug in my code (it was a horrible hack job; it's almost unmaintainable).
hmm...it seems that with every discussion of the funding of %GOVERNMENT_PROGRAM, somebody will compare it to the Iraq war. I wonder if this is just a passing fad or will it be here to stay...
The University of California is being raped by the budget. Seriously, not only wre there going to be massive tuition increases, but they're also using furloughs, and all the administrators have done is spout bullshit about how they are going to fix it, but never seem to give specifics.

If you actually read the article you linked to, you'd know that the military is NOT ditching proprietary software., they are ditching " systems that couple hardware, software and data" What this means is that Microsoft will not have any problem because Windows is not specifically linked to any specific hardware.
It's interesting that you bring this up, but I believe that there might be another factor contributing to the higher incidence of brain injuries. Apparently some people did a study comparing accident fatalities in corvettes and vw beetles some time ago. Because they were designed to go faster, the corvettes had many more safety features, so the people doing the study expected the bug to have far higher fatality rates, but surprisingly, it was exactly the opposite. It turned out that the reason for this is that the people driving the corvettes were driving them far faster than the bugs. One of the reasons for this is that since the people driving the corvettes thought they were safer, they drove faster, not knowing that driving faster cancelled out all the benefits of the safety features. A similar effect might be causing that higher incidence of brain trauma in helmeted riders.
Actually, given the results produced by this survey, 5000 is in fact an appropriate sample size (you should take a statistics class). Now, all of your other concerns are valid, especially the mean time before fail, as given an infinite time period, the failure rate will be 100%.
As someone who went to a high school that used Alice in its introductory programming course, I would strongly suggest that any 15 year old looking to learn to program should stay away. I fortunately did not have to suffer through a course using it, but I heard from friends a year behind me that it is awful. They saw it as having little or no practical use. I also had a similar experience when my dad bought me a copy of microworlds logo when I was in 7th grade. I quickly found myself bored learning the concepts that were being taught in the guide that my dad found for me, so I started to mess around, but since I knew barely anything, I wasn't able to do much. My experiences with programming in java have been far different. I have been able to actually program stuff that I find meanongful and it doesn't feel like a dead end. I however would not recommend java to any 15 year old looking to learn programming, as it is an OO hellhole.

I only saw him state that he heard there were "30 serious injuries." I didn't see any comments about deaths.
http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewnews.html?id=1568 The guts of the reentry capsules is neat. I really wish I could be there but sadly I'm on the opposite coast.

Caption on the image: "Riot police on horseback confront rioters in downtown Vancouver." The catch: no horses in the image.
Got this one too. Who knows what else will be affected?

Impact craters are NOT always circular. http://www.google.com/mars/#lat=14.626108&lon=176.132812&zoom=6 large impactors striking at oblique angles do not leave circular craters

I go to Berkeley, so it of course does.

...unless the sharks have fucking lasers
Whenever I encounter a computer running ie6, I want to take a sledgehammer to the computer.
I find that when I take mine, I might even be LESS likely to finish (or even start) a task if I dislike it...
So when does the whale-shaped space probe come?
So, if I spend my time on slashdot instead of doing my homework, am I addicted?
