When they say stuff like this, what's the point?

Consumers don't know what html5 is and even if they did they wouldn't care. And developers, etc. know what they're saying is lies. So it's a lose-lose type of comment.

  15. rsync on Apple Asks Security Experts To Examine OS X Lion · · Score: 1

Not specifically security related but does anyone have any idea what version of rsync has shown up in the beta? The version that ships with 10.6 is rather outdated so it'd be great if this (pretty important) tool were brought in line with where rsync is now.

  16. Terence McKenna spoke a lot about this on The Animal World Has Its Junkies, Too · · Score: 3, Informative

Have a listen to his 'Search for the Original Tree of Knowledge' (tape 4 from memory) for a very nice exposition of the Santa Claus/psychedelic reindeer juxtaposition (e.g. red & white Amanita mushrooms that live under Xmas trees, toy-making elves, Lappland, flying reindeer).

  17. This is fantastic on WikiLeaks Starts Mass Mirroring Effort · · Score: 5, Interesting

I live in Thailand and WikiLeaks is blocked here for some ridiculous reason. The more the 'authorities' around the world try to squeeze the balloon, the more it bubbles out somewhere else. So this is golden for me. The more they are forced to host their site in a non-conventional highly-distributed way, the easier it becomes for the people of Thailand to access it.

I have retinitis pigmentosa which affects me in a number of different ways. At the moment it's the night blindness that's the most problematic. But as the disease is a degenerative one and as there's no way to predict (or even give a rough estimate of) the time when I will be fully blind, not a day goes past when I don't think of what it will be like to be completely in the dark. Ahh, no. Drum & bass is the 'textbook' example of music that gets hacked at low bitrates. (I take it that DnB is a 'related genre'.) Now, of course, there are excellent rips of very bassy & snappy hi-hatted DnB tracks at lowish bitrates but these are all vbr. But put these up on a 15k rave rig and the bass is no longer punching you in the chest I can assure you.

  25. Re:Why.... on Thai Gaming Sites Ordered Shut Down After Suicide · · Score: 1

A lot of people are talking about (Aristotelian) logic here but it's missing the point completely. Two things: I've lived a number of years in Thailand & Cambodia. I love (Aristotelian) logic as I believe it is beautiful and underpins the very basic facts of our universe. The three laws of thought are: i) A is A; ii) It is not the case that 'P' and 'not-P'; iii) It is the case that either 'P' or 'not-P'. These seems impossible to deny. In fact, they're a sound test for irrationality. Now, you won't find this logic in Thailand. This statement is not meant to offend. It's just the truth. It can be infuriating at first if you were brought up with Western logic drilled into you. But you'll soon learn to accept the Thai way or else you'll be forced to leave under threat of going insane. My point here is that to say this is a non sequitur, etc. just doesn't really apply to the cognitive situation in Thailand.
