  4. My issue on CowboyNeal Weighs In On the Windows 8 "Metro" GUI · · Score: 1

My biggest problem with Windows 8 is the lack of visual cues. In Windows 7, there is a tiny rectangle in the bottom right of the screen that when I hover the mouse cursor over will hide every open application and show me the desktop. If I click on it, all open apps will minimize or restore to their previous state. That rectangle is present in Windows 8 as well, but its basically invisible. If I am at the desktop and want to go back to the start menu, I can just push my mouse to the bottom left corner of the screen and a start menu tile will appear that I can click on. But there is no visual indication that I should or can do that.
The whole operating system is like this. The Win+C brings up the Charms Bar (and that name annoys me). However, there is no visual indicator I can click on or tap with my finger to bring it up. When your whole user interface relies on blind guessing to make things happen, its a horrible user interface.
I am providing tech support to millions of grandmothers and non-technical people. I have problems getting them to understand right vs left click and its been decades since the mouse was invented. Windows 8 is going to be a freaking disaster, whether using the touch interface or a mouse and keyboard.

Being married is not an experience that is easy to convey. I am happily married even though there are times my wife drives me crazy. Marriage takes effort, its a kind of job. Its worthwhile, but it takes work to make a marriage work.
And you are right, marriage - and especially children - creates a lot of problems to deal with. So I can see how this would stop hacking. On the other hand, good luck with that. You are suggesting going up to a girl and saying, "Hey, you're pretty cute. How would you like to date an anti-social computer geek that has learned to relate to women through 4chan?"

Personally, I dislike Agile Programming. Its sloppy. There is a place for it, such as if you need to rapidly develop an app that needs to work, but doesn't need to work well. Its programming in chaos. I prefer an ordered approach to application development.
You need a working utlity as soon as possible to analyze, detect, or whatever you want it to do? Fine, use an Agile appoach. Just accept that what you produce is going to be buggy, and probably with shoddy documentation. Sure Agile can be handled in an orderly fashion, but then it loses the flexibility that makes it worthwhile.
I prefer a slow and steady approach. Its not sexy, but I want my code done well, rather than quickly.

Really. You say the business owners you talk to are worried about estate taxes. Well, since the Obama's current proposal has a bult in $3.5 million dollar exemption and would be taxed at 45%, I find it very hard to sympathize with your business owners.
I am assuming you are relaying this story in an attempt to paint Obama in a bad light? If he's really after estate taxes, all Obama has to do is nothing. Because in 2013 the tax rate will automatically change to a 1 million dollar exemption with a tax rate of 55%.
Yes, I know. Its shocking. Apparently Obama wants a lower estate tax rate than Congress already has in place. I think your business owners might want to call their congressmen and ask them why they aren't pushing Obama's estate tax proposal through Congress.

Also, if you make a mistake, your manager will throw you under the bus. I got let go for fixing a mysterious issue with a beta installation that was causing a loop in network traffic. Why was that a mistake? Because apparently fixing a problem in beta, even if you fully document the issue, is forbidden to the support guys. Only the beta team is allowed to actually fix a problem in a beta program, even if it is at 3 am and not a single fucking member of the beta team would answer repeated calls or pages (yes, we still used pagers back then).
But am I bitter about that? Well, yes, I kind of still am. Fuck Microsoft.
