Why aren't drivers, by law, required to learn on an older car with a crappy 4-cylinder engine, manual transmission and no ABS or other modern conveniences (well, ABS is required by law in newer cars nowadays so that may not work). You may scoff, but you'll also be a better driver in the long term. I learned on an ancient Diesel Fiat Uno. It was horrible :-)

Actually, no I'm not. 0.7 was buggy as hell and totally unstable (it was an early alpha release!!). 1.0 had minor bugs, 1.0.7 has been completely rock solid for me. 1.5 beta 1 had an occasional issue with leaking memory, fixed in beta 2. What I have noticed is that the quality of FF extensions are going downhill fast, many of them are buggy enough to crash the browser. The only ones I use are Forecastfox and AdBlock, which both work fine.

About half of all searches through Google are from WinXP. The implication is, that if MS controls ~90% of computers, that they have failed to convince roughly 4 out of every 10 of their users to upgrade from previous versions.

I don't think so, roughly half the people I fix computers for are running an early version of Windows (mostly Me [which self-destructs every couple of months thus assuring me a steady income!] and 98). The reason that most people haven't updated to XP is not so much lack of marketing by MS, it's just that they bought the machine 4 years ago, it came with Windows 98/ME, it does what they need it to, and they see no reason to dish out $99 or more for an upgrade.

It's exceptionally rare to meet someone who actually went out and paid for XP (yes, many people pirate it) without buying a new machine.

The simple fact is, most people just don't care so long as the blue blob connects them to the internet when they need it to.

He makes one excellent point at the end: memory. Memory is what Windows needs more than anything. Once you remove all the cuddly crap, Windows 2000 and XP runs perfectly well on a classic Pentium so long as it has 128Mb or more. Preferably 256 with XP.

I've never tried XP or 2000 on a 486, but I would be willing to bet it'd run fine (NT certainly did). Anyone else tested this?
