  1. I will add that I see lots of trees planted. 1000's of newly planted (within last few years) trees of all sizes. It's in District Tongzhou where I live, in urban areas. There is also word that China will redeploy 50K soldiers to plant trees this year. So low hanging fruit yes, but also serious efforts as far as I can see.
It's about my only wish for China - is to clean the air, everyone will benefit.

Because the government is all powerful, they shut down 1000s of polluting businesses in Beijing and put in place requirements that made it hard for them to return to business unless they cleaned up their emissions. Of course there are complaints, but Chinese like Americans complain about government, but the Chinese mostly move on as recourse is limited and they know it.
I am limiting my stay here (one year) because of the pollution, but I may waver in that. That is, waver tomorrow, but not today.

    - It might be rejected in a transaction. Lame, someone else will take it. Its only $5

  5. As a fellow geek I took to bookbinding in the late 90s to balance out the high tech I was involved in. I'd recommend you get a custom blank book made for your daughter. A few of your words written down in the book will be a source of comfort and joy that will last a lifetime. Years later people come to me and tell me that they are keeping track of things, using it in some way that makes me feel lucky to be a part of their lives. Your daughter will write things and draw things in this book and it will be something from you that she will treasure. You can get it personalized it some meaningful way. For my nieces and nephews, I have found their favorite colour, animal, a favorite shirt, and made it from that. In my own journals I will draw an outline of the hand, and you could do that your in the book to her. In our high tech world, something physical like a book is a good thing. Best wishes.

Use regular 19th century handguns. Works for me. Do I use a scientific magnifying glass to look for blunders? No. I just sit back and enjoy and don't give a rats ass about that - leave that to others.

The mix of future and contemporary, sci-fi and western, redneckness and intelligence and humor and seriousness captivated me. Bring on the movie. A little breath of fresh air in the glut of shows that pass for TV entertainment.

I plan on watching the series late september and then checking out the movie. Will wait.

After sitting behind a desk for fifteen years I decided to see if I could still do physical work. I am working up in northern Canada in the oil patch. The area is a sour gas field and one mistake can kill you. It is hard on an old man and hours are long but there is a satisfaction. I won't do this forever and can always go back to software development. Life is too short and varied for being a one trick pony.

I enjoyed the companionship and humor of other software developers and now enjoy the companionship and humor of oil patch workers. The work can be dirty, long, hard and physical. Cracking the "greenie" label and being accepted by the rough and tumble crowd is satisfying. Its not for everyone, I don't know where I'll go next but I am not afraid to try. And besides I hear some great new jokes and sayings like "...that lease is so far fucking north they have to truck in sunshine!"

One can read the "Northwest Passage" and be amazed at early artic explorers. The drive they had is nothing new, its been around for centuries. We are doing that today in different ways as this articles points out. They explored new lands which is essentially what we are doing today only the landscapes have changed.

  25. my experiences on 13.8MP Kodak Tops Previously Leaked Canon · · Score: 3, Informative
I have had digital cameras for almost 5 years now and have shot over 16000 of pictures, taking up about 2.5gig. I have a P70 canon right now and am looking to get a new camera. I am serious in an amateur way about photography so your mileage may very. My experiences and wants:
    • Don't be fooled by "digital zoom" - optical is the key and you will love optical zooms.
    • optics do play an important role, and you pay for good optics (hence the price difference)
    • battery life - definitely rechargable.
    • next shot delay - how long between pix does it take the camera to get ready. Mine is slow and its irratating.
    • make sure you get something other then serial port downloading. (ie firewire, usb or I got an ImageMate CompactFlash reader - fast)
    • I miss the control of my SLR, the next camera I get will have more then just auto programs.
    • the more megas the better, try and get a step higher then you can afford. My massive 1.2 mega pixel 4 years ago is dinky today. Am glad I did not get something much smaller back then.
    • take lots and lots of pix - you are bound to get a few jewels if you shot lots. My rule of thumb for my SLR was 1-2 great shots in a 24 pix roll.
    • small cameras are easy to carry, but I like something substantial to hold on to.
    • digital cameras allow you to experiment and I let my kids go nuts with it!

So how much saving over film & developing charges? Well, 16000 pix / 24 pix = 666 (!) rolls of film. 666*$10 film & develop charges = $6,600. Thats the minimum it would have cost! And I probably shot at least two to three times that and tossed out the crap.
