Apple is a bit different because they have MacOSX to differentiate themselves from other PC OEMs. Along with designs that are different, no neccasiarly better just different; this allows Apple to charge more and gives Apple an advantage that the other manufacturers currently can't compete against. This may or may not change in the future (Vista closes the gap), but currently I think Apple is going ok. Especially in light of their excellent quarter.
Seriously when I was growing up my parents never had any of this technology and yet they managed to keep me out of trouble. While I agree the world is a different place, and there are lots of new and different problems, it all boils down to the parents taking an active role in the child's life. Things like asking the kids how their day went, what sorts of issues they had, things that let the kid know that home is a safe place. Or how about making time to have dinner together, or helping with the homework or the millions of other things families should do together.
Is this hard to do, hell yes. But nobody ever said life was easy, and in the long run spending time with your kids will be worth it. Remember it works both ways, when the parents are old and need someone to talk to, the children will be there.
Notice that the price drops are the same day as when Core 2 Duo is released (July 23rd), that means the price drops are on the older P4s. That's great if you don't mind getting a P4, but Intel is doing what any other company would do. Drop prices on older products to clear out space for newer ones. Makes sense.
Cheap domestic calls are easy to get these days. Vonage, Skype, Cell Phones, etc all make it easy to call anyone in the USA (or at least 48 continental states). Its internation calls that are still a bit expensive. Granted things have gotten better as most international calls can be made for less than $0.50/minute and some in the low $0.20/minute. I remember when a phone call could cost upwards of $3/minute! Ouch!
Unfortunetly for OS/2 is that the installed software base is very small. So if you are content with whatever software is out there for OS/2 (old versions of browsers, etc) and don't have a fast computer then yes I agree OS/2 is worth it. Otherwise you're better off with Linux, Windows or maybe even Solaris.
All this is going to do is prevent software that emulate hardware (Daemon Tools for example) from working properly under Vista. As I recall these types of software pretend to be hardware using unsigned drivers, so this won't work unless they get the drivers signed somehow. Looks like a way to enforce DRM to me.
The wedding photographer for my wedding gave me a DVD of the video + photos. After about two years the DVDs were so degraded that I could not a single DVD player would recognize them. And that's with light usage... Now I keep important DVD as images on an external hard disk.
That doesn't make sense! The AP article claims the pirates were 100 miles away from the cruise ship when they fired rockets. Yet the Wikipedia article claims LRAD is effective from about 300 to 500 meters well under a mile, much less 100 miles. Heck at 100 miles, the Cruise ship has at least 5 HOURS before the pirates can catch it. Seems like a no news story to me...
Do people out there really use DOS? I can understand an old point of sale system that might still be running DOS 3.3 or 5.0, but why upgrade something that is still working fine. And if you do upgrade, why to DOS?
What I want is a electric/diesel car. Something more along the lines of 200hp and 50+mpg! While the newer Prius, Civic, etc hybrids are nice and all they are just way too underpowered. By swapping out the gas engine with a diesel one you can get better gas mileage AND better performance.
It definitly looks nice, alot like Outlook Express and maybe a bit like the new Yahoo mail. But I still prefer Gmail with its very small out of the way interface. While it would be nice to have Gmail with fancy buttons instead of text labels, it would just clutter up the interface. Either way competition is good!
This is just amazing! While other companies encourage employees to get advance degrees to help yourself, no other company encourges employees to get advance degrees to help others. Excellent!
Itanium as an architecture isn't all that bad, and has some great ideas. The only problem is that with Itanium most of the work has to be done by the Compiler writers to get as much performance out of the machine as possible. NOPs are a killer on Itanium because they take up precious space on bundles. X86 and other architectures are not as dependent on compilers for performance (well ok that's not totally true). Either way normal archs have had 30+ years of research into how to optimize code while Itanium realistically has had about 5 or so.
It's all about the mobile processors. Intel's PentiumM's are FAST, low power usage and did I mention FAST? Seeing as how Laptop purchases are rising faster than desktop purchases, and since Apple's laptops are the most long in tooth, I'm betting that the first new Apple Intel box will be a laptop.
To me that sounds a lot like Sun's Niagara box. Huge CMT box (8 cores, 4 threads each, 32 way box). With power consumption around 65watts, but faster than 4way Xeon processors and probably more like an 8way depending on application. Intel probably is moving to something similar, maybe not quite that many cores and threads.
Apparently its not off the shelf stuff like the previous record holders. I'd argue that the defcon crew had a harder time and definitly should get to keep the title
There is one way around this, that's to go to the 3 large credit companies and tell them to "Freeze" your credit (I think it costs $5-$10). Anyway nobody can open an account in your name, and as long as you remember to "thaw" your account before getting a loan, you'll be ok. It's no perfect, and I'd argue that all credit information should be purged from people who don't need it (this includes SSN numbers). Heck none of this should even be on file...
Is $160 close enough?
The SONY eBook Pocket Reader is exactly what you want, but its $160 at Fry's.

I'm surprised the guy didn't send every link to goats.ex... He was being way too nice.

So with this what's the difference between the USA and China? We are supposed to have Freedom of Speech, but I guess not.

Who has variables named "vvvv" and "uuuuu"? At least make them somewhat useful, even if they are temporary variables.

My IPod 30gb Color, also scratches very easily screen. Screen, case, you name it. That's why the ipod case business is so large!

I find that some video podcasts are actually quite good. For example, Diggnation is quite good: http://revision3.com/diggnation
as is Systm:

The only way to stop this decrease in privacy is to fight for it. If we ignore this, there will be even more issues and privacy violations.

Is it sign of the times that prices are now paranthesed in Rupees??? It's just a matter of time before we start seeing R1.3M ($200K).
