XP is a lot faster than Ubuntu on my machine. Booting Ubuntu takes forever! And the interface is slow as molasses. The days that Linux was (much) faster than Windows are long gone.
That depends. I think those guys can predict the existance of hand-held supercomputers in 10-15 years because they will do everything to stop the development of other computers.
A few days ago I thought, since I read/. a lot I must have a very skewed view of Vista, so I went looking for unbiased reviews. The conclusions of the reviews I saw varied from 'nice but mostly eye-candy, no compelling reason to upgrade', to 'Vista turned me into an Apple fan'. Is it really that bad? Can someone point me to a review with a positive conclusion (not from an MS fansite)?
More on-topic, I was very happy with the ArsTechnica review. Finally a review where they didn't drule over the new eye-candy without considering useability. The review made me decide to wait for the next revision of Leopard before buying it. I am quite happy with Tiger, and I didn't see any compelling reasons to upgrade soon. Besides, I use black backgrounds all the time so I wouldn't even be able to see the writing on the new transparent top bar in Leopard:)
I think the tag feature that/. has works very well. If I had heard about this article being on/., I certainly would use the search criteria "science, overactiverostralanteriorcingulateandamygdala, datewithgisele, datewithgiselebundchen, giselebundchen". I wouldn't know how to find this particular article in any other way.
What happens if you make a CRT that uses positrons instead of electrons. Will it suck up light, instead of emitting light? That'd be so cool: instant darkness!
There will always be people who nag about everything being better in the olden days. I didn't read the article because of the stupid advertisement, but if the guy who wrote it really thinks pong was the best game ever made I feel sorry for him. I, for one, am enjoying the torrent of new adventure games that we are experiencing at the moment a lot!
A recent study showed that if people have to wait for more than 4 s for a website to load they get bored. I had to watch a stupid advertisement for 15 s, or press a link I discovered after 4.5 s. Sorry mates, I won't see your website. This was an even more stupid and offensive way to force advertisements down my throat than those stupid popup advertisemnts you see on some websites.
I'm not sure about that. Apple recently released an upgrade that shoud work against the regular crashing of new Al iMacs when doing graphics-intensive tasks. From the forums I gather that that upgrade caused MORE crashing...
The fact that/. is covering an adventure game is a clear sign that adventure games are becoming mainstream again. Hurray! We adventure lovers have been waiting patiently for ten years or so, but finally they're back!
That is so cool:) But you know what would even be better? A portable car cruncher! You can bring it to the scene of the crime on a truck, and the car is crunched right there with the owner watching.
"Hi Sir, that's a nice Ferrari F40 you have there. How fast were you going again? What, only 220 kmph? What a pity, you could have gotten more out of your car." (Crunching and screaming metal noises in the backgound) "Do you want your car powder in a plastic bag, or shall we dispose of it? Have a nice walk home!"
I've heard about e-paper and the way it's going to revolutionize our lives for about 5 years now. I've never seen one device that has it, and I've only heard about this Sony thingy so far. If this stuff was really so good other manufacturers should have embraced it by now and we should have a hard time avoiding it, no? For me e-paper is just like Linux on the desktop: always just around the corner.
Here in Europe each year we have a bunch of super rich arrogant bastards who also make the roads even more dangerous than they already are in their attempts to cross the continent as fast as they can in their supercars. They are rich enough to pay the bills, so they don't really care about those. Speed limits are there for a reason, so stick to them! Traffic tickets should be depending on income/wealth instead of being fixed like they are now.
You can almost hear the sound of the vacuum created by bloggers thinking that their words matter when the people with control don't even know how to read the tubes. Lick a stamp or march- that's harder to ignore.
I couldn't agree more. I wouldn't even know how and where to find all these important bloggers in the tubes...
Is that a review?! There wasn't any information in that very short piece of text, spread out over far too many pages, that I couldn't have come up with myself. "It becomes slow when we run a big office suite and firefox on it and open more than 6 windows." What would you expect? I think the fact that it is still useable with that much load is a testament to the quality of even todays cheap hardware.
Good point; according to Apple my new iMac uses 280 W max., but in practice it's more like 120 W. Which is quite low compared to my old PC + 19" CRT, who did a nice 225 W together.
Yep, my new iMac uses about half the energy my 5 year old PC rig used. And it's MUCH faster and has a MUCH bigger screen too.

Keep in mind that a 'high-tech' country does not have to be a 'developed' country.
OK, I see, so if I want to find an article about the behaviour of Piranha vs the Microsoft SQL server, I look for "Natalie Portman"!

I wasn't ironic at all, I meant it. Look at the various adventure websites around. New games galore! This is a good time for adventure lovers like me.

There is only one game for the Mac that matters to me: Myst Online.
Placebo effect.

Yeah and of course everybody leaves his monitor connected to his server and switched on at all times ;)

Haha that's a very good point. Poor MS. ;)
Oops, that/than
That doesn't matter. MS has much more money that Redhat and is able to sue them to oblivion even without proof.
