  2. Oh boy... on What is the Best Way to Handle a GPL Violation? · · Score: 1

That one has been repeated here over and over and over.

    GPL is a license.

when I give you some software, I have the copyright, meaning you can only use it, and do some "fair use" stuff with it... nothing more.

GPL is saying, ok, you can do some other things with the software, e.g., freely copy and distribute verbatim copies, modify it (things copyright law does not allow you to do) and I promise you can't be prosecuted for doing these otherwise illegal things (here's the catch) if and only if you also do ....

Now, if you don't want to do ...., you simply refrain from using the aditional rights I waived you in the license. And you are ok. But if you infringe the terms of the license, then you are violating my copyright in the work in case. And you are open to prosecution, civil and criminal both.

    Easy, huh?

#1: 12-step program. works, really works. I have direct contact with two "programme" people: my mom (got rid of 1 pack of cigarretes that she smoked everyday for 42 years); her husband is an AA and did not drink for the last 20+ years.

#2: sheer willpower. My dad got rid of smoke (smoked half a pack per day for 20+ years) this way. I smash my caffeine habit when it becomes very nasty this way. Beware: the return rate here is much higher then #1... My case: I stayed caffeine-free (no colas, no coffee, no cocoa, etc) for a full year. but today, I drink at least 1 liter of coffee everyday, or else, the same symptoms you described appear.

    Hope I have helped.

case in point - the secretary that uses MS word can probably tell me very accurately and concisely what word does. And if someone else wrote their own clone of word, i bet she'd find the differences. The secretary isn't a programmer. She's the customer - the end user.
Wrong, wrong, and wrong. Case in point -- my wife is a District Attorney. She types in 40+ pages/day of legalese. I yanked Word from her machine, installed OOo, themed the toolbars/menus so she could use all the buttons/submenus in the familiar places, substituted her desktop shortcut, and... voila... she would not have known the difference if I had not told her. Ok, she does less sofisticated page designs than a financial-firm secretary? maybe... but maybe not. Not a single complaint.
She is a computer USER for the last 10 years (the time she has been a D.A.). No programming, no other computer skills, just Word, web, mail, icq and Sims....

She was my gf at the time. I stuffed the boy with Works, did a backup batch file, which she runs every week, plugged the HP500C printer, that is also in use up to the present date, and voila... the typed/edited/printed 40-200 pages of documents every work day in the last eight and a half years and it just works.
