The "Hits Linux between the eyes" comment was a random potshot made by a suspiciously anonymous source. To the contrary, I'd say Apple is giving the open source model the sincest form of flattery. I swear, ZDNet isn't the only news site that needs to rein itself in.
@$%!&*#@! $70 for airborne express on a G3, or $50 for UPS groundtrak across the country. the reason why most net stores have reduced prices is because they _know_ we have to pay shipping (and taxes in some cases), and they only way they can keep an edge on brick & mortar retail is keeping their prices down! Guv'mint diots!
As far as I can tell from the article, the main point of the research is to ultimately prevent deformities in human babies by learning the relationships between specific genes and development. At least, I hope that's where the research stays. I sure as hell don't want my local grocer investing in this.
Wow, was this the biggest story Slashdot's ever had?

It's just one of those facts of life. I've been beat on so much in college for being a Mac user and I make fun of Windows in kind. All you need to do is keep it from getting too personal. C'mon, a public forum is no place to be thin-skinned, is it?
When you start integrating raisins into your sliced bread, I sue. Millions of consumers will be inconvenienced by your "innovation" by having to remove your integrated raisins and putting my superior raisins in.
One day, a bunch of Microsofties decide they want to bump up their hit count. How best to do this? Why, get/.'d of course!
"Hmm, slashdot is full of Linux users... How about we put Red Hat logos everywhere to appeal to slashdotters, even though we sure as hell haven't installed Linux on a single computer before. It doesn't matter, nobody will figure us out! I mean, the internet is totally anonymous! What, Winzip? Windows? Nobody will notice those logos there. The slashdotters will totally love us for having Red Hat banners and for being funny, since we have tons of funny stuff everywhere! I bet we'll even get regular visitors from slashdot! Hey, let's make it look totally natural and ask out friend MOREX to report it to slashdot for us!"
Whether this rumor is true or not, it's very possible, and it makes complete sense. As somebody mentioned, 1/3 of the money that Microsoft makes comes from its Office Suite. That's because people normally purchase it in a shrinkwrapped box from a store for $200-$400 (i can't remember exactly). Windows, on the other hand, is bundled free with most new computers (the OEMs usually shell out about $30-$40 to MS for each copy of windows). Of course, there's a ton more copies of Windows than there are copies of Office, but you see, they make a bigger profit off of Office. And if MS makes office for Windows, there's an eeeeenourmous opportunity for them to cash in. How many companies out there haven't switched to Linux simply because their management forced them to standardize on MS Office? How many companies are going to switch to Linux when MS Office becomes available? Now, how much does Red Hat, or Debian make every time someone switches to Linux? Fifty bucks. How much will Microsoft make when someone switches to Linux and MS Office for Linux? Two Hundred Fifty bucks.
Now, since Linux is considered a "work" OS, these newbie corporate Linux users are more likely to buy an Office suite than the average joe on Windows. Despite the anti-Microsoft sentiment in the O.G. Linux crowd, there's that huge pool of new Linux users who are aching for a familiar interface and office suite and don't mind using familiar MS products.
ALL OF THIS = "CHA-CHING!" FOR MICROSOFT
Damn, Microsoft could end up making more money off of Linux than Red Hat!
AFAIK, the Sorenson compressor used in Quicktime 3.0 has the highest quality-to-filesize ratio of current video codecs. I'm sure Lucas was impressed by the quality change when he replaced the Cinepak Quicktime teaser with the Sorenson Quicktime teaser. Also, I'd bet green money that Steve Jobs did some lobbying and negotiating with Lucas to have the trailer in Quicktime only. I'm sure if Lucas hears enough complaints (HINT HINT), he'll release an MPEG version.
As for people who are getting horrible frame rates while playing the 480 trailer, it's because the Sorenson codec is an incredibly processor-intensive compressor, and requires G3 or Pentium II to play back well. My poor little PPC-604 isn't even fast enough to handle the big trailer...
I ripped the logo off a demo machine at the MacWorld Expo, resized it and emailed it in. I don't know if it ships with powerbooks or if it's only for demo machines. As for the old rainbow colored logo, I never put the old Apple stickers on my car since the rainbow colors could too easily be confused with another bumper sticker...
I see you're using the new apple logo I sent ya. =)

still, like i said before, i'm not gonna believe it until i see a PS2 connected to the display that's outputting these movies. They could've been rendered on "special development version" PS2's for all we know. After a while you learn not to bite the bait too quickly. I still recall Intel demonstrating bogus high-speed Pentium Pro's a few years back... they were in special refrigeration units under a table!!!
Seeing as how fishy the 50 million trianges/second announcement sounded, this could easily have been rendered on computers and sent out to kill any leftover excitement about Sega's Dreamcast. Until I see a picture of a prototype Playstation2 connected to a TV and rendering these graphics on its own, I'm not falling for this smoke-and-mirrors campaign.
this has already been done, as far as i know. it appeared in Popular Mechanics almost a year back, and there's already speakers available that implement this "flat" technology (Benwin). The sound quality is hardly on par with traditional drum/magnet speakers, from what I've heard however.
Maybe the reason that an update hasn't been posted yet is because Rob's not checking the replies every half hour, which i think is understandable. Though it would be interesting to see _how_long_ it takes before it's updated. Anyone been timing this?
I dunno if it's available everywhere, but GTE's been rolling out DSL in my area and their pricing seemed reasonable (384kbs + service for $90). I didn't even have to tell them I had a Mac, they asked me and were already prepared for hooking up Macs to their DSL. It's coming in this friday, I'll tell you how it goes...

Ok, i guess you don't need a G3. I assumed you needed one to run the big trailer since my system right now is a 604 (not 604e) and runs at 180mHz...

That _is_ the reason why it's not called OS9, but who cares? OS10 sounds better anyways, although OSX (as in X Files) would be cooler still
