Thanks Alex for the nice review. I'm glad you liked the book and that you find it useful. I'm also happy that you received the book in the hacker spirit that it was written.

We spent a lot of time working on the projects to get them just right for nearly every situation, so the instructions are very accurate. If you find a variation that doesn't work, be sure to submit it to us over at the website.

If you don't mind, I have two corrections to your review:

    1) My last name is spelled WOLBER (as noted in a previous post).

For those of you not in Ximian who don't know, Chema started and ran our Mexico City office, led the Ximian Setup Tools team a few years ago, was in charge of the team that managed our contract with HP, led the Ximian Desktop for a while, was one of the creators of GNOME Love, and was recently our lead sales engineer for Europe.

Chema was one of the most loving, passionate people I have known. Being around Chema always made you want to do more and try harder. He was always questioning himself, trying to grow, taking on new challenges and never backing down.

When I went to visit our office in Mexico I stayed at Chema's house and gripped the door handle on his car till my nuckles turned white when he drove us to work. Whenever he wasn't on sales trips or skydiving he seemed to be in my office asking good hard questions and always pushing for us to do more.

Chema was easy to love, and he will be easy to miss. "

  7. Profit Motive on McBride's New Open Letter on Copyrights · · Score: 4, Interesting

I had to read 3/4ths of that stupid letter to finally get to the point. Apparently they contend that a license, like the GPL, strips the profit motive from a work, and is inherently illegal. To justify this, it pontificates broadly on some recent court cases and the constitutional basis for copyright law.

Just because the constitution defined copyright to help protect profit motives and thus speed along innovation, that does not mean we cannot use copyright law in a different way.

I'd like to direct Darl McBride to the ninth ammendment to the constitution of the United States of America. To paraphrase, it basically means that if something hasn't been outlawed, it's legal. Or in other words, nothing is illegal until it has been outlawed. When it comes to using copyright in a different way, that means that there's no law saying that we cannot use an existing law in a way that it wasn't intended (so long as that doesn't break any existing laws).

Yeah, it's a rather weak legal point, but if that's what you're screaming, then you've probably missed my larger point. Every (weak and rambling) point that the article puts forth can be countered by hundreds of examples that prove that this new use of copyright law fits in the mold of what the founding fathers intended. Innovation is happening under this model, the masses have found a way to be involved and to contribute to OSS and the greater good is being served every step of the way. To anyone who cannot see that, I would respectfully question their motives and/or their awareness of temporal reality.

Just got back from the 6:00am showing of the movie and I was pretty impressed. Nothing was overdone like the big fight scene in Reloaded. There were some great twists and turns. The back channel plots were great and the end came together beautifully. It was also very academic in some respects, which probably explains why general audiences (read "unwashed masses") won't "get" it. You don't necessarily have to be glued to every word to understand what's going on, but it helps having seen the other two movies along with the Animatrix a few times. You should definitely not go into the movie expecting it to be a self contained story.

In a lot ways, I understand the bad reviews. It's a lot like where Open Source was a few years ago. It was very hard at times to get people to understand the benefits of it. I am sure that in time people will see the message of this movie and that the trilogy will be a real classic.

I definitely give it two thumbs up.

Yeesh guys, go easy on these people. They bust their asses every day for us. Their GPL enforcement queue is usually about 50 cases deep. They're on the phones and on capital hill every day educating and lobbying industry groups and politicians. Say what you will about the GPL, you don't even have to like it or agree with it and perhaps you even think RMS is a narrow minded prick (for the most part RMS isn't even involved in the day to day operations at the fsf). They are making life easier for all of us.

Rather than boast about all of the work they do, they quietly work behind the scenes just so you can play Monday morning quarterback. They have one fulltime systems administrator who is *INCREDIBLY* overworked. They are doing everything they can to keep the boat together. Last year they were over $315,000 in the red. Thanks to the FSF associate program and some skillful fundraising they're back in the black.

Want to help? Go get your FSF associate membership. It's not that expensive and it goes a long way towards helping to protect your freedoms.

Incidentally, this is also old news. They had MD5 sums verified, and the servers were patched up and back online almost two full weeks ago. None of the software was trojaned.

That morning, as I was packing up the car, I noticed the pictures of some very famous people on the wall, such as baseball legend Pete Rose as well as a few presidents IIRC. I remember thinking about what a neat place the Genetti was and that I might like to come back again some day.

I used to have a dial-up account with Northwest Link circa 1998. They are quite possibly the rudest, most disorganized people I have ever worked with. They double billed me for the first three months of my service, and then they proceeded to bill me for 3 months of service after I cancelled my account.

I cancelled my account in mid 1999 because I got DSL. I received confirmation of this. Four months later I received a collection agency notice saying that I had not been paying my bill (on an account that I had cancelled). I responded with plenty of evidence that I had cancelled the account. The mailed response ignored any of my evidence and re-iterated the original claim. I finally called the NWLINK offices and talked to the NWLINK collections guy. I don't recall his name, but the collections guy sounded like the most crochety old man I had ever heard. I stated my case and his response was, "Pay your damn bill! We don't run a charity here!!!". It was as if he hadn't even heard a word I said, or as my father likes to say, "we were having two spearate conversations". I got the feeling that he thought I was some punk kid trying to scam NWLINK out of a few months of service.

I will never again do business with them. To those who have asked me about Internet Service Providers over the last 4 years, I have advised that they not do business with NWLINK either. I doubt I've made any impact on their bottom line, however I can assure you that the $75.00 they got out of me cost them at least ten customers.
