    Indoctrination and stigma resulting from history are the reasons to try to push these. I know of too many people that refrained from taking a particular major because of some gender stigma. It's not logical, but humans don't act logical. These efforts to get more into are efforts to break these walls of indoctrination and stigma so that people don't refrain from a particular profession.

    As far as math goes, at my particular university, as well as a nearby college, the enrollment in math was about equal between the sexes. I was also recently (well, within the past two years) at a math conference (at St. Norbert College) and almost *all* the presenters were women. However, this is all anecdotal evidence, and anecdotal evidence is rarely useful.

    Thanks for the pessimism, but I'm afraid you might be right. I know of no parent that would be willing to pay $200+ for such a device, unless they're rich and spoil their child.

    Just to clear something up:
    So Qt can currently use native (or pseudo-native, in the OS X case)

    Pseudo-native? It is native. Emulating it would be too cumbersome.

    Perhaps that person is, but I've shown Firebird to people who aren't computer literate and they do not have complaints about it either.

    But then, it's all anecdotal evidence.

    All that remains is for Bush to claim himself Emporer, and Chaney to learn the secrets of the Dark Side and become horribly disfigured in some sort of Volcano-related accident.

    Now that would be a Star Wars movie I'd like to see. The Emperor would have a dad that would constantly pay for his reelections because he hasn't realized that when one is Emperor, there are no reelections. Darth Vader would be fat and constantly infirmed for heart attacks.

    ...to users who don't use KDE or its apps on a daily basis. I'm sure most KDE users still use Konqueror, myself included.

    many times, the punishments do not fit the crime. It would be like sentencing someone to life for just breaking a door to someone else's house.

    You should look into intacts to see if you can get those instead. They're better than Lasik. My mother got intacts, and she doesn't need glasses anymore. She had problems with far- and near-sightednes.

    I guess what should really be asked is, who would bother to buy one for a tree and then not listen to it? Trees get lonely too.

    What about doing a series focusing on the adventures of a Maquis ship and its crew? I think doing Star Trek from a non-Federation perspective will help bring it a new freshness that it needs.

    It's this pioneering attitude that will take us into space to stay, not the NASA mindset of "risk nothing, even if it means nothing gets done."

    That's a little ironic when considering that the reason the US beat the Soviets to putting humans on the moon was precisely because the Soviet's line of thinking was exactly that, and NASA had cut a lot of corners to get there.

    Linux-specific code? Did you bother to look at the man page? Didn't think so...

    And I quoth from my man page:CONFORMING TO
    POSIX.1b (POSIX.4). POSIX 1003.1-2001 describes posix_madvise with constants POSIX_MADV_NORMAL, etc., with a behaviour close to that
    described here. There is a similar posix_fadvise for file access.

    Why isn't this on the front page? This is by far a lot more important than much of the dribble that gets posted to the front page, and yet it's relegated to just the Science section.
