I think we're getting to a point where technology is so complex that, as Arthur C. Clarke once noted, technology is indistinguishable from magic. Some people like magic, but many most certainly do not. It's not necessarily comforting to not know what is going on behind the scenes in technology.

This "rebellion against digital" is really an attempt to find technology that those people understand. Older technology provides a decent base from which they can understand the more complex technologies. This is the evolution of learning.

is, BLANKET STATEMENTS. However, I'll admit that I'm a little pedantic.

The article does make some good points, but they're mired in the numerous blanket statements about the whole of OSS, and blanket statements only tend to draw the ire of those the writer wishes to reach. He tries to make up for that by saying "I would evaluate it only on a case-by-case basis," but that's not enough, IMHO.

  10. The esoteric OSS projects on Unsung Heroes of Open Source Software? · · Score: 3, Insightful

I think it is the developers of the little known OSS projects that are still being worked on simply due to the love they have for their projects that are the true unsung heroes of OSS.

Contrary to what some believe about innovation within OSS, innovation does happen. The problem is that innovative and unique projects within the OSS arena get little to no fanfare, and are thusly ignored. When an OSS project develops functionality similar in nature to a closed, proprietary software package, it may well receive much attention and fanfare because people are familiar with the functionality, and with the OSS project, they are given an alternative. With something new, there is no marketing money behind it, and so no one knows about it, and no one is looking for it.

For example, FrogJam was developed completely independantly, and from what I know, the original developer, plat, had no knowledge of anything even remotely similar to it when he conceived of the idea. He continues to work on it to this day for the love of it, even though he's the only person really working on it (despite what the developer's page says.)

Do you support the Red Cross? They help out military personnel as well. F/OSS is much like the Red Cross. War is a part of what defines humanity and always will. With systems like these, we can at least be sure to hit only the targets we want to hit (thus minimizing or possibly eliminating unnecessary collateral deaths), and keep our own casualties down.
