  1. Bare bones... on AMD: No Grease For You! · · Score: 1

Interesting news. This gives me yet another reason to buy a pre tested bare bones setup next time I decide to upgrade. Or even go as far as to have the system completely built and ran through the a burn-in cycle. You don't have to sacrifice getting a custom built system either. I've found several custom builders online who provide a wide range of high quality components such as Lian-Li cases and Asus motherboards. I haven't yet reached the point of laziness that I'd be willing to buy a pot luck system from Best Buy. Allthough with PC prices as low as they are, and with CPU speeds and RAM doubling every year, it is sometimes tempting to go with a Dell.

The point (obviously?) being if CPU manufacturers are going to be so stringent with their products, then I may be better off letting resellers deal with the manufacturer so I will just have to deal with the reseller. That may very well be what AMD wants to achieve in the first place.

I agree about quality being are more important than quanity. I bought a GameCube just so I could play Metroid Prime. (And I went ahead and got a few other games too since I had the console. But Metroid Prime is the reason I bought it.)

Actually I'm about done with PC gaming. I like the idea of tossing in a disc, pressing power, and being "off to the races". As soon as consoles get up to par with Network gaming including Internet and LAN gaming, I doubt I'll ever install a PC game again.

And just think of the money I'll save on hardware!

How is that the fault of the company? I'm a bit of a rebate junkie myself. I don't know why people complain about it being such a "hassle". How is writing your name and address on a piece of paper, sticking it in an envelope along with a copy of the receipt, and mailing it out a hassle? It takes what? 3 minutes tops? I can't remember the last time I paid more than tax + the cost of a stamp for a stack of blank CDRs. Some rebates are slower than others but I always get them sooner or later.

Of course I prefer in store instant rebates, who wouldn't, but I'm not about to pass up a good mail-in rebate because of the "hassle". I've had more of a hassle taking taking certain items out of the bullet proof plastic packaging than I've ever had filling out a rebate form.

At no point did I ever say jdoom/Doomsday was going to make the old classic Doom look like what Doom 3 is supposed to be. If you were expecting then that, then I'm sorry but you're a complete idiot. Based on your comments I'm guessing the original Doom predates you. That being the case, you couldn't possibly appreciate how much better jdoom/Doomsday looks than the original Doom.

If you want to see what "the big deal is", go get yourself a 486SX/16 with 4MB of RAM, a 1MB video card, and a 100MB hard-drive with DOS 6.x installed it. Then install the original Doom on it and play it for a while. (Of course you probably wont last 20 minutes.) Dial up directly to your buddy over a 9600 baud modem and play him 1 on 1. If you want to play more than 1 person, grab up your computer and meet up with 3 of your friends at someone's house and you can play up to 4 Players!!! over the 10Mb BNC LAN.

Now go back to your Pentium 3GHz, your 1GB of RAM, your 128MB video card, your 120GB+ hard-drive, your cable/DSL, and then take another look at jdoom/Doomsday.

I do agree that many people who have no real know-how but have lots of money run out and get certifications just to have them. And that's unfortunate because it makes the rest of "us" (those of us who know our stuff) look bad. But the same thing has been happening for years. A high school diploma used to be optional and you would still be able to land a decent paying job as long as you knew what you were doing. My dad never graduated high school and made over 60 grand a year working at Caterpillar as an electrician. He knew how to do his job and back then, that was all that mattered.
