You're right. As this page points out, their machines come with WinXP Home Edition from the OEM. They just happen to blow it away and ensure that all of the hardware works very well with Linux, and your choice of distro is installed for you out of the box. They also provide a year of tech support, hence the markup.

Note: I have no problem with Emporer Linux's business model, and wish them success. However, I don't think they'll meet the submitter's requirement to never pay for Windows.

I don't see what the DMCA has to do with any of this, but I think your reference of retailers inviting the public in doesn't apply. The prices and sales information that was being published had not yet been released to the public.

The idea of information having to be released to the public before certain rights are given to the public is shown in (almost) everyone's favorite license: The GPL. Under the GPL, you are only required to distribute source to a modified product once you release that product to the product. If you modify and use a GPL product internally, you don't have to release your source. The prices and sales information referenced here was still only being used internally. I think we should cut at least a small amount of slack because the prices had not yet been published.

That said, I still think the DMCA is stupid (not to mention unconstitutional), and hope that absurdities such as this lead to it being repealed or struck down.

Isn't burning a book an act of Free Speech? I personally don't think Harry Potter deserves the stake. However, the members of the church that did the burning were exercising their 1st Amendment right to say "We disagree with this!" in a graphic manner that did not infringe on anyone else's rights.

I'm not "accusing" you of any particular political leanings, but if it was a bunch of Bibles being burned, would you still think that the event was anti-free speech? If burning Bibles shows a respect for Free Speech, then burning Harry Potter also shows a respect for Free Speech.

Now, if they were trying to get Harry Potter banned, then I would disagree with the church on 1st Amendment grounds.

Quit using TeleGlobe's service, tell them why you are leaving their service, and set up shop elsewhere. If using the RBL is so evil and dangerous, ISPs will quit using it when enough customers leave because of it.

Finally, raise your hand if you've ever been in a life-threatening emergency and chose to dial-up and check a disaster relief site as opposed to getting somewhere safe and calling 911. SafeSurf's use of that analogy (Think of the children! Think of the children's lives!) to further their point is sickening.

First, I do not keep a television in my apartment. I simply do not watch TV. Instead I spend my time keeping up on the news or playing games requiring a little intelligence.

At work I listen to 700 WLW most of the day, which further keeps me informed. Additionally, Mike McConnel and Bill Cunningham give excellent, right-leaning commentary.

I think part of the problem deals with the visual fixation of our culture. Everyone I've discussed this tragedy with talks about seeing the towers collapse again and again and again on TV. I was at work when we first heard a plane had hit the World Trade Center. (I initially thought a Cessna had gone off course or something. I wish that would have been the case.) Until I got home at six, I hand't seen a single visual image, even though most of the day's story had already developed.

I watched the video of the impact and collapse once from each angle, and watched video of the President's speeches. Other than that, I avoid looking for video (or even audio) links from the news sites. I would much prefer a long text story (or a three hour radio program), which requires actual reporting and/or intelligent thought or opinion.

I guess my point is that I try to be informed of as much as I can (be it politics, foreign affairs or tech news), but avoid the "oh look, shiny things" mentality of much of our TV news.

One last thing: I applaud most of the major news sites for pulling their ads in response to this tragedy. Of course, I don't think too many companies want their brand associated with terrorist attacks.

I think the many different player voices that were available upon character creation really impressed me.

What was extremely important for Black Isle when they were creating these games based on D&D is that they have to draw the player into the experience. Apathetic voice actors would very quickly kill the illusion, and that's why I'm glad that BIS took the time to do it in four different titles (Baldur's Gate I & II, Icewind Dale, and Planescape:Torment).

As a member of what you would call the Christian Right, I think that there is something that needs to be clarified. To my knowledge, protesting in front of abortion clinics is legal, credit card fraud is not.

Are there members of any organization (be it right-wing, left-wing, or foreign) that will laugh in the face of legality or morality in order to advance their cause? Of course. Should the rest of the group be judged by this pathetic minority's actions? No.

My point is that I don't agree with abortion clinics or porn sites, nor do I feel that their presence is good for America. Although an abortion clinic is not someplace my anatomy would cause me to visit, I did spent several months addicted to porn, and it just about destroyed my life. However, even with my own experience, do I think that porn sites should be forcefully shut down, either through DOS or legislation? No.

I believe that pornography is a symptom of a greater longing deep within someone's empty life. I do my best to spend my life giving people an alternative to that longing. This alternative is something that lasts and will last a lot longer than simply a good wank.
