How on earth is an automobile like an OS? Or a lightbulb, for that matter? I'm talking about standardization... like being able to go to any gas station and know that the gas will work in your car, or getting electricity from the power company that is guaranteed to operate your light bulbs. Windows is a product designed to make Computers work. Your analogies are somewhat lacking...
I'm sure the Linux crowd won't agree with me, and this will almost certainly be modded down -1 (Troll), but I'm going to say it anyway.
Monopolies are determined by what percentage of the market share a company owns given a specific market. This market definition can make or break a company.
I'm not claiming that Microsoft isn't a monopoly, but I'm claiming that the original judge defined the market wrong. In determining MS's monopoly status, Penfield Jackson defined the market as Intel-Based home computers. So freaking what??? If I'm going to restrict the market to Apple home computers guess who has the monopoly on OS's for them?
Great.. so Microsoft has a monopoly on home OS's, AND Apple has a monopoly on home OS's. Here's my next question: Is that neccesarily bad? One major OS means one major driver for hardware manufacturers, and it also assures me that I can buy pretty much any software at Electronics Boutique without having to wonder if it will support my hardware. Don't get me wrong... there are plenty of disadvantages, but WE CAN'T FOOL OURSELVES INTO THINKING THAT ALL THINGS MICROSOFT ARE BAD (apologies for the caps.)
Where it not for the ease of use of Microsoft products, home computers would not have taken off nearly as much as they have (try getting a tech illiterate person to install Linux on ANYTHING.) If Microsoft hadn't done it, some other "nasty corporation" would have. Why, you ask? Because it needed to be done. Standardization IN SOME CASES is a good thing... don't forget it.
Consider this... A company that uses Spam sends out 1 million offers, and gets a 1% rate of ppl accepting the offer. That's 10,000 suckers. How much did sending the 1 million e-mails cost the spammers? Probably $30 or so... just enough to buy one of those programs that harvests e-mails. So... in the case of spammers, they think "what have we got to lose" and let quantity try to make up for quality...
"prove those copyrights were not used to monopolize and stifle the distribution of digital music"
I had problems understanding this phrase until I got to the second to last paragraph in the article:
"Napster lawyers have alleged the record industry withheld their copyrights from digital music services until three of the major labels could launch MusicNet. Once that service was launched, just days after Napster was shut down, company could only obtain wildly restrictive licenses to sell music. "
So THAT's what this is all about... The record industry isn't against digital music, they're against anyone besides themselves making use of it. If they had their way, I know of at least a few radio stations that would be shut down. Where does it end? Am I going to have to change to the Sony-owned radio channel to hear the latest music???
While there were some similarities to real society, a close look revealed the artificiality
I'm wondering just how much exactly they spent on this study just to find out that comic books are in fact based on real society? I think the only reason this would even be important to the slashdot community is to see how foolishly Universities spend their money. I could have told them that comic books contain artificial societies for only $100 probably saving them thousands...
Any Universities needing useless information about comic books should make thier checks payable to aardWolf64, care of...
I wonder how long after it's released to the general public it will take some Slashdotter to overclock the blasted thing. Imagine facing the titanium justice of a 100Mph segway...
Wow, don't you love having a corrupt, completely unaccountable and evil entity altering and influencing your government and law makers?
Do you think that stuff like this doesn't happen all the time? Don't you ever go to the movies???
You think the US government would decline contributions from any and all companies who have had their questionable business behaviour legally challenged.
Kinda makes sense, no? A lot like convicts being unable to cast a vote.
Unless you really wanna spend mega dollars on the fiber, cat5e seems like the best choice. Although fiber doesn't experience Electro Magnetic Interference, if you run two fiber jacks to each room, you're gonna need something that's capable of plugging into that.
If money is not a factor, I say run both Cat5e AND fiber. Use the Cat5 now, and you can always use the pre-run fiber in the future...

Of course, you'd have to be willing to stand out in the cold wherever you're going. Remember that this thing has no features to protect you from the weather. (But who knows by the time this puppy is available commercially...)
Okie... I was basing that on my Cassiopoeia E-115. Much slower than the iPaq, it had problems even running the Gameboy emulator (of course, the Gameboy emulator was graphics intensive...)
Are you a moron? ANY time the moon passes between the earth and sun, it's an eclipse. The moon is always "full". None of it goes away just because you don't see it in the sky... When it's not considered "full", the shadow of the earth is on it...
TiVo is basically a linux box that records video/audio to an internal hard drive, so that you can pause (and rewind) live TV. It can also record just like a VCR. The TiVo will work in the background and automatically record shows that you like to watch, so it DOES keep usage statistics.
The TiVo dials into their central server every night and updates its program listings. During that time, I guess it tells them your usage information.
I've read that scientology members sit for hours with a lie detector that they believe cleanses them from the alien-demons that inhabit their bodies. They believe that these demons hinder a successful life, so anyone that is popular in our culture is considered a leader in Scientology.
Yes, and imagine the results of cloning people with genes that can't reproduce. Eventually, the ONLY way to have a child will be through cloning. Thanks, but NO THANKS...
Heck... The auction is up to over 60,000, and the reserve still hasn't been met. He's probably got it set to something like 10Mill because he KNOWS he won't have to deliver.
It's NOT a more accurate count if you only hand count in EXTREMELY democratic counties. Consider this:
If you hand count votes in ANY county, you're going to find votes that weren't counted. If you do so in a county that is 90% Gore, it makes sense that about 90% of the thrown out ballots would be for Gore. Likewise, in a 90% Bush county, 90% of the thrown out votes would be for Bush. SO, merely counting ballots by hand may be accurate in that particular county, but it only skews the statewide vote. The only fair and reasonable way to hand recount would be to recount the entire state.
But... what about the other states??? Don't we want "accurate" counts there? My question is, when does it stop? Do we really trust the election officials in the United States enough to mandate an ENTIRE COUNTRY hand recount? Such a thing would take months, and would never bring a sense of finality to the election...
You say that Bush is a thug... I submit to you that ALL politicians are thugs.
How true, how true... All you did was mention the truth, and you got moderated down as flamebait. Apparently some Democrat got lucky and had some moderation points to blow...

Yeah, but think about the potential speed... With the WinCE overhead, you'd be lucky to get PalmOS running at a decent speed on top of it...
Hmm... "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness"... ring a bell?

Hey... I'm all for taxing free products... Just make the tax a certain percentage of the purchase price! In this case, we'll assume a tax of 100%:
100% x FREE = STILL FREE
