Blizzard, not caring about balance. Anyone who knows anything about Blizzard games can appreciate the humor in this. This is the company that put out 8 patches trying to balance the Zerg right in Starcraft. The company that put the 1.10 patch out in Diablo 2 two years after the games release, balancing Summoning Necros. The company that was averaging probably 10-20 buff/nerfs a patch during W3's heyday trying to get all the races/heros balanced.

Go ask Star Wars Galaxies or Everquest players about balance. They'll tell you they'd give their left nut to have Sony care half as much about balance as Blizzard does. Blizzard will balance the Warrior. People just need to have a little patience.

  17. My results on Microsoft Releases AntiSpyware Program · · Score: 2, Interesting

So I downloaded and installed this on my machine to check it out. Keep in mind that my machine routinely has spyware scans of all kinds run on it, as I test out almost every spyware system imaginable for work.

    - It reported WinPCap as "spyware" (or rather an "enabler", whatever that means), but it did have a default action of "Ignore" associated with it when the scan was done.

    - It disovered c:\program files\support tools\remote.exe as the Cyanure Remote Administration Tool, classified as a Severe threat. This is Microsoft-made tool that comes with their Windows 2000 Support Tools.

    - Some leftover directories of Hotbar that Adaware apparently did not fully clean up from a previous intentional infection.

This is the first time I've ever seen WinPCap flagged on any kind of spyware scan, kind of find that amusing. Microsoft must hate Ethereal or something. The Remote.exe thing is sort of funny too, but probably not unexpected, though it did not have a problem with the copy of Remote Administrator I have installed on my machine (in server mode no less). It'll be interesting to see how this performs on some intentionally-infected machines, compared to AdAware and Spybot.

  25. Re:It's interesting on Game Industry Not Bigger Than Hollywood · · Score: 4, Insightful

You're right of course, gaming has a much better sequel-to-suck ration than the movies. Also, some game characters/universes should never be allowed to die (Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy, Warcraft, etc).

But it's almost getting to be too much of a good thing. Off the top of your head, can you even name more then 5 video games that are based on an original idea/concept, produced in the past year or so, and has either won critical acclaim or seen high sales? Without resorting to GameFAQ's I'll try and see what I can come up with:

    1. Khatma Damacy (sp I'm sure)
    2. Fable
    3. City of Heroes
    4. .......Far Cry?
    5. ...................I'd like to say Mario Tennis but that doesn't really count...Viewtiful Joe!

Seriously, those last two took me quite a while. The point being that even if sequels are excellent on the whole, gaming needs new ideas. Look at a game like Metroid Prime. Excellent game in every aspect, technically solid, beautiful to look at, exciting and fun to play. But does it really break any new ground? You're still Samus Aran, alien bounty hunter, and you're still showing up on planets to kill beasts and crap bombs out of your butt.

I'm not trying to say these games don't need to be made, because quite frankly I love these types of games as much as the next guy. I'm just saying we have to keep the industry fresh with new ideas, or things are going to get stale.
