You can use the iPod as a hard drive.

However, using a FAT filesystem from a battery is time consuming and wasteful. If the iPod had to find all music files on your drive every time it started up, it would waste much energy.

So if you copy music, they won't play. But if you use iTunes, you will find hidden folders that have all your music in it. There are programs like ephpod that allow you to copy the music back off.

I also hated the idea of iTunes organizing things for me, until I started using smart playlists. That's letting the computer do what it is good at - keeping track of files. Now I just have to add album titles to 13,000 songs. :)

Yes, but drivers are part of the kernel, and so saying you need to recompile the kernel every time you recompile the kernel doesn't say much.

Now the binary parts of those modules mean that the kernel can't autorecompile them for you, but that's not the kernel's fault.

And if fact, the 2.4->2.6 kernel change did require a new version of modutils, and also, you could get improvements to some applications if you recompiled.

My insane plan would be as follows:

Emergency care for things like broken arms, accidents, etc, is always covered.

If you want long term coverage, you become a "ward of the State," and have to follow certain rules. For example, if you're receiving care for cancer, you must not smoke. Basically, if you want the long term care for free, you have to be willing to follow certain recommendations from the Health Department.

So, for example, the paramedics restarting your heart after the five thousandth McSuperBurger is free. But if you want the open heart surgery or a double bypass, you have to agree to follow certain diets.

Basically, this is similar to what the military does. They'll cover you completely heath wise, but you must maintain certain "performance levels."

That is why I'm opposed to nationalized health care for the entire country. If you want to do harmful things to yourself, we shouldn't remove the consequence. Basically, each person should make decisions about their own life, and be prepared to deal with the consequences.

Yes, I agree. With one caveat. Society shouldn't have to pick up the tab. So if you smoke, and get cancer, you need to get treatment from your own health insurance, not from state supplied medical care.

If you break an arm, it should be covered. If you have lung cancer from LA smog, you should be covered. But if you have lung cancer from choosing to smoke, it shouldn't. Society shouldn't prevent you from harming yourself, but it shouldn't pay for fixing you.

  25. Re:Too funny! on MPAA Sues Movie-Swappers · · Score: 1

I don't see the publishing industry collapsing, even though their books are freely available at libraries!

False analogy. A book doesn't cost 138 million to make and involve thousands of people. Music and books involve a very small number of people. But to make a movie like The Incredibles requires a support system like what we have today.

Movie making would continue without copyright, but it would not be of the caliber of today's films. Very few people could afford the millions of dollars to make the Lord of the Rings if they didn't have a good chance of getting it back.

File-sharing will not destroy the arts because people like the arts. What file-sharing will hurt is the sucky movies, but that is more due to the internet than to anything else. After all, the Incredibles still did big money (already profitable), because people really do want to sit in theaters.

Now you could respond and say, well, the Linux kernel is worth billions, no-one could afford to write it. But the difference there is that it is a gradual work The first versions of Linux were useable, but the first 3 minutes of the Lord of the Rings is not very usable.

Perhaps when computer animation is so advanced that you can create an entire movie with the same effort that a book need (1-2 man years), then we'll see the decline of the movie industry.

See, if a $1 million movie could be as successful as the Incredibles, they'd to that! Why spend $135 million to make $150 million when you could spend only $1 million?

And for another argument: some people (not necessarily you) say that it doesn't matter if I download the movie, as I wasn't going to pay for it anyway. What if I went into the theater and watched it without paying, and said, "The seat was empty, and it didn't cost the theater anything more?" How about letting me ride the bus free as long as there is an open seat? That's similar.

All that said, I do want to make known that I think CDs are slightly overpriced, but DVDs are not. They are sometimes cheaper than CDs. I'm using iTunes quite a bit, and I'm waiting for iFilm to do the same thing for movies.
