This is pretty minor -- his job is IT and while his aims are noble he hasn't been asked to represent his employer. That's somebody else's job. You have to recognize the limitations of your job function and work within them -- that's not putting your head down, that's being a professional and doing your job.
Fortunately, few people think differently. My job is not IT support, graphics, or the office air conditioning. But I get myself involved with all those guys. And the right people noticed.
Why is it so hard for people to understand the meaning of "monopoly". Microsoft created IE in such a manner that it intentionally broke web standards and ensured that things worked only with IE. Read the internal MS emails released from various antitrust cases. They discuss these "tactics" quite openly. As for the rest of your post regarding notepad etc - not really relevant since the most important component of the computer is the web browser.
When dealing with the average joe, I find that I don't need to tell them it's better. Invariably when I'm fixing some stupid windows problem on their computers, I just tell them from now on to click the red icon, because now that's "the internet". I also delete the IE icon from their desktops. It has worked every time.
Can't you guys filter such crap before putting it onto the main page? If you go to the submitter's profile, you can see that all the submissions point to maximum pc. Such people try to collectively game the system to get their site hits by submitting and then upvoting their own submissions. Stupid posts like these have no business on slashdot.
"Microsoft hopes companies making devices such as cameras and smartphones will adopt the Extended File Allocation Table (exFAT) technology to support the sharing of audio
and video files. The technology is available on Windows 7, Vista SP1, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Embedded CE."
Ok, so why are you advertising it here? How do such topics make it to the front page?
I had the same problem a few weeks ago. Dell changed my motherboard (I had to argue with them and prove it first). The problem lies in the cooling fins that get clogged with dust and grime. The don't let the hot air out, and the system overheats.
Are you actually judging India by what you experienced in the Himalayas? How stupid are you? That's like judging US by visiting mountains and campgrounds.
I always find people who say "Why spend money on all this tech.. let's put food on the table for so many thousands" extremely naive and stupid.
What's the point of giving all those things to those people if we're suddenly nuked? Is free food and clothing going to defend against terrorist plots? A country that helps the poor while others spend on space research, could look extremely stupid when 20 years down the line, it's dominated by others that put their monies in greener pastures. Also we need to explore feasibility of life on other planets because the human race is would be a waste if it puts all its eggs in one basket. Ultimately knowledge is strength and the smartest country and not the most well fed one will prevail.
Why do they need the whole PS3.. why don't they just buy the individual components that they need rather than wasting money on all the useless stuff like controllers etc?
Obama won a peace prize.
they don't really "believe" in Santa- but geeks sure like sci fi.

Yes. A thousand times yes. That's how you earn respect and get noticed.
It uses the same music as 28 days later? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6x_ovbbXHMY

I think such a post would be better posted / discussed at a place like digg. Very little of the slashdot audience cares about octopuses and coconuts.
It's not worth discussion, as you can see.
No

That's BS, There's no commercial processor that can consume 270W on load.
I forgot to add that after the change of motherboard, my 3dmark 06 score went from 3600 to ~4800.

How do you come to this conclusion without knowing what the policies will be?
I suspect it will be an add on to the existing systems, rather than a replacement

Surely there's better stuff to discuss than ants on a site like slashdot? When did this site become animal planet?
yes. because truth is always more important than feelings.
It's bad enough that I would no longer recommend that anyone switch to it. Because if they have a crappy experience, they'll never try linux again.
it would be more productive to fix 9.10 first
