Yeah I agree. The best part was when Cingular ran a campaign that offered all these extra weekend and evening minutes. It was funny because they offered more minutes than you could possibly use during the weekend and evenings. As if nobody ever slept or something. Most cellular companies use tactics like that to try and convince the regular people that they are getting a better value when in fact they are not. My only gripe with Verizon so far is that their "Off peak" minutes are from like 9pm to 7am.

Actually with the impending Verizon Strike, (God I hope that doesn't happen) if you were to use wire cutters and cut enough of the service line from the phone company, you could render them useless for a while. Think about it. A call goes into starbucks tech support. A ticket is generated. A couple hours later a tech calls the phone company and gives circuit IDs and problem. Because of the strike it takes a week for a phone tech to get to the site. He sees that they need to run a new service line. (4, 12, or 25 pair. whatever they need) He then leaves because he is the phone company and heaven forbid they actually do anything right away. He appends on the ticket that they need a new cable run. A couple weeks later a tech goes out and runs the new line and restores the service. Total down time = 3 weeks maybe more.

Actually, I have to correct you on the "expensive" thing. In the second quarter Verizon Wireless's average service revenue per subscriber was $48.66 This is a lot lower then the other major cell companies out there. The reason for this is Verizon does not pull tactics like placing you in plans that are not fit for you. I.E. Some other providers like to put you in lower plans and then when you use up your minutes your bill gets outragous. Verizon actually has a computer based tool that calculates your best rate plan based on the actual minutes you use. Plus with Verizon, you can change your plan at any time.

  13. Why this makes sense from their perspective on ATT Raises Prices for Cable Modem Owners · · Score: 1

First a quick rundown of how cable modem networks work. Think of the bandwidth of a cable modem network like a tree. each branch comes together and is supported by a larger branch and then eventually the trunk of the tree. all these branches have to share the bandwidth. If one of the branches is utilizing a lot of bandwidth, the rest suffer for it.
How can the cable companies prevent this from happening? There are two ways. They can either boost the bandwidth so that everyone can get maximum speed or they can throddle down everyone's connections so that nobody can get more than anyone else. Well, to boost everyone's bandwidth, that would cost the company millions upon millions. They would have to order tons of circuits to every neighborhood not to mention router upgrades and such. However, cable modems now a days have bandwidth limiters. That's right. You can throddle connections down right from the cable modem. Well, that makes more sense now doesn't it?
What AT&T and many other cable modem companies are doing is throddling down your connection. It's slower ,but at the same time within the boundaries of your agreement. By doing this, they don't have to upgrade their infrastructure as fast and you don't have to worry about someone else hogging all your bandwidth. AT&T is allowing people to still use their own modems (Which they cannot throddle) but at a cost of an additional 7$ a month. So, for an extra 7$ a month, you can make everyone off your router miserable by hogging their bandwidth :) Other cable companies won't even allow you to use your own cable modem. (Time Warner in Rochester NY for example)
Basically, from their perspective this makes sense. They can help to control the hogging situation and at the same time slow down their need to expand their network. I've seen companies go down the tubes because the need for bandwidth got out of control and they could not afford to expand. I just wish that they would come out with some sort of burst rate for these cable modem networks similar to how Frame relay works. That way, when the bandwidth is not in use, I could get the extra speed I want. Perhaps somewhere down the road.

  14. Re:Not Popular on E3 Doom III Preview · · Score: 1

Just so you know. Not everyone plays FPS because they have some sick obsession with blood and death. I play them and I don't have any such obsession. When I look at the pictures for Doom III I'm not looking at the blood smears and the gore. I'm looking at the attention to detail, quality of lighting, the curvature of the objects, and the overall textures. I think most of the people who are excited about this game are excited because the D3 engine brings something more to the gaming industry. It's new technology that will provide a more realistic experience.

On top of that, you are completely disregarding the themes behind these games. A good FPS will have a good theme. Most of them place an ordianary human in impossible circumstances or places them in a position to be heroic. It's the overcoming of the odds that kids like. In our modern day society, people are rarely in a position to overcome impossible odds. I've never been placed in a situation where I could be the hero. People have a fasination with the idea that they can do something great. So, if a game places a guy on an alien planet, and they are set to destroy the world and he is humanity's only hope, well you get the picture. I hope that this reply helps you understand some of the other perspectives that are out there.

This does not include our company's tuition reimbursement program which allows us to take ANY class required to obtain a degree in our field (That includes the libral arts stuff) and pay for the tuition and the books. The only requirement is we have to stay at the company for one year afterwards and obtain at least a C.

On top of that, every department has online training available. For our department that includs all the CISCO courses to obtain both a CCNA and a CCNP, a Solaris certification, as well as several general Unix and programming courses.

Also, our company believes that books and magazines are an excellent way to learn. So, our company allows me to have subscriptions to several magazines including: SysAdmin, Linux Journal, Unix Journal, and even the Hacker Quarterly.

I guess because I work with a rapidly changing environment, we are constantly required to keep up to date. But at my last employer things were almost comparable. I guess that's why I've been with this company for as long as I have.
