I don't know about everyone else, but in the fortune 100 company I happen to work for they are moving all new projects to AIX and Linux. This has been going on for the last year. The sad part, for Sun/Oracle, is that it used to be a primarily Sun shop. Now all new projects are AIX and Linux and there is no interest in approving any Sun equipment. All the tech refresh projects we have are moving businesses to either AIX or Linux. This represents a fairly large revenue stream that they are losing. Seems to be a common trend from blogs/forums/etc. that I'm reading.

I can only imagine how things would have been in these times.

While I think that everyone can benefit from martial arts training. The opinion of "Just deal with bullying or beat them up!" is no real solution. The ideal would be for parents to not allow their children to bully others and to correct them when they see that kind of behavior starting. A solution that I don't see legislation helping.

This is another thing with modern culture. Our minds are tuned to break things down into the core objectives and what why to complete those goals in the most optimal way (i.e. video game mind set). I suppose this is just a part of the moral mine field presented by the current reality.

The dilemma here is that the volunteer developers for that software package probably think "Hmm, that will take lot of my time. Since I know how to do this in my software, but it isn't easy enough for Joe Bob what incentive do I have to devote a crapload of my time so it is more simple? Or I could implement some more features and not work on usability since that isn't my problem." If someone wants to have the usability improved in an app they need to do it themselves or pay someone to do it. That's how proprietary software works and nobody but the company that produces the product benefits unlike free software. As noted by others the upside of free software is that everyone benefits from improvements made, which makes the cost less for everyone in the end.

The notion that volunteers in the open source world somehow owe the business world something, when they haven't paid jack squat for it, is very odd. If you are a business and you think that you can pillage the hard work from a group of volunteers and it will "just work" you need to get a clue. Contribute some dollars for development if you want things improved. That's how the free software model works. There is no free lunch, but free software is cheaper and better for everyone in the long run.

Here is a metaphore, it is like you running a food business and someone giving you a recipe for cookies for free and then you bitching that they aren't as good as Famous Amos (or whatever other kind of cookie you think is best).
