  1. Re:What's a Hallow? on Seventh Harry Potter Book Named · · Score: 1

The most compelling theory I have seen on this is that the Hallows are the remaining Horcruxes.

In mythology, the the Four Hallows of Ireland are treasures possessing magical attributes - the Stone of Destiny, the Spear of Destiny, the Sword of Light, and a bottomless cauldron. The Four Hallows are sometimes referred to as the Four Treasures of Ireland, and this would seem to fit, in that Voldemort's greatest treasures would be the horcruxes.

If the correlation holds, "deathly" would most certainly be a fit adjective to describe such things created by the Dark Lord, and the title of the final book, which we know has to deal with Harry's quest to find these objects, would roughly translate to "Harry Potter and The Remaining Horcruxes".

It's bizarre how, at their limits, capitalism approaches Bolshevism.

People tend to see "left" and "right" wing politics existing as alternate ends of a spectrum, getting more and more unlike each other as you travel in either direction. I think, though, that politics tends more towards a circular representation, with "center" parties being very alike, differing on relatively few issues, then party's politics diverging as one move's further in either direction, so that center-right and center-left were roughly opposite, and finally coming together again so that far-right and far-left were once again almost indistinguishable.

I'm sure somebody else has come up with the idea before; I came up with it myself when I was reading 1984 as a kid, and had a problem understanding if the government was supposed to be extreme right or left. Sorry if I haven't explained it particularly well; its clearer when drawn on paper :)

Actually, on this issue I've seen more slashdot user criticism of Google than I have on pretty much anything else they have done; "evil" or otherwise.

In fact, the majority of the posts to this thread, at least those I've read, seem to be arguing against Google on this, many jokingly pointing out that a thumbs up from Bill Gates, the "Big Bad" on Slashdot, is hardly an winning endorsement of their actions in China.

I think (but could be wrong) that his point is that the more information that is going into China from the outside, the harder it is to censor -everything-, so while the amount of censoring technically is increasing, so is the chance that relevant information will get by those censors.

  18. Re:Is it really that hard to understand ethics? on Wikipedia Plagiarism Ends Journalist's Career · · Score: 1

I don't consider it a "greater sin", I consider it a worse attribute to have in an employee. If I were a newspaper editor, and one of my employees was plagarising work, any number of things could happen if he was caught. If he admitted it, or I was the one who caught him, I would punish him in some way; possibly dock him pay or whatever, possibly fire him. However, whatever the situation I can deal with it "in house" and avoid large-scale scandal. If my employee gets caught by the original author, however, because he wasn't clever enough to disguise his work, then the problem becomes more global in scope, and my newspaper is brought into serious disrepute.

I am not saying that it is right to plagarise, or that plagarism is "better" morally than being caught, but if I was an employer in that situation, this is the last thing I would want my employee to bring to the company.
