True. However, There are plenty of parenting oriented sites out there for ads like this.

I come to slashdot to get my fill of tech and geek oriented news/views, and I expect a general information filter to keep stuff that does not fall into that category firmly out. This quite clearly is not geek or tech news, no matter what medium the product comes on.

Without meaning to sound offensive, there are probably Slashdot readers out there who like *shudder* Britney Spears. By the logic apparently used in this case, when Britney releases a new CD (with accompanying CD-ROM, by golly!), it deserves a place on the Slashdot front page.

That new Britney CD is about as relevant to my life as a Baby Manual that, by golly, comes on a CD-ROM, and it should not be on Slashdot.

Whatever you feel about MS/Google, its interesting to see how having a "don't be evil" rather than a "make lotsa money quick" mantra from the outset colours people's view of any plans you put forward in later years.

I never saw Firefly when it was on tv over here (Ireland), but I heard/read the buzz about it from the States on the Internet. why are companies still trying to push what has been proven time and time again to be a product that nobody wants

Ebooks have to be "made" - formatted, designed, secured and uploaded, just once. Then, by this plan, they can be sold for 66% of the price of a printed version. So the cost of producing the work is relatively non existant, and you still charge that 66% of normal cost. The reason companies are so obsessive about pushing this idea is that they can, if it works, make millions and millions of dollars from their publications, without ever having to go to the cost of printing them.

They are being pushed not because the public want them, but because for companies looking to cut costs and maintain/increase profits, they are a veritable fountain of youth.

Please don't read this as a flame, but what the hell is meant by this? Maybe its because I don't buy into this work-till-you-drop mentality that so many people in capitalist economies seem to have, but why on earth is this being used as a rationalisation for maintaining outside-office freedom of assembly?

This reads as akin to "How dare they stop us meeting outside work! Don't they know that we do more work for them when we meet?", and is from my viewpoint pretty disgusting.

What about "How dare they stop us meeting outside work! Its none of their god damn business what we do outside of the time that we are payed by them!"

Why the seeming sycophancy? Are people so brainwashed by capitalism that they think they have a moral duty to comply with their employers, and no right to stand up and say "Hey, go screw yourself. My personal time is mine and mine alone"? That's all the "rationalisation" that should be required!
